Cypress Gardens

Reflections of the Past
Cypress Gardens was created by owner Benjamin R. Kittredge in the late 1920's. Early one spring, as the story goes, Mr. Kittredge saw a red maple reflecting in the black water swamp. From this inspiration, "he created the beauty of these surrounding Cypress Gardens." Since then, the colorful Gardens have thrilled thousands each spring reflecting a profusion of azaleas, dogwoods, daffodils and wisteria in the mirror-like inky waters. Visitors can enjoy the lovely surroundings from over three miles of foot paths or the unique vantage point of flat bottom boats.

A Rich History
Cypress Gardens was originally part of Dean Hall, one of the Cooper River's most important rice plantations. It flourished from the 18th century until the Civil War.

The 163 acre swamp-garden was the agricultural center of the 3,000 acre antebellum estate, and the swamp was used to flood the surrounding inland rice fields.
A small working rice field recently recreated at Cypress Gardens, and rice once again planted, tended and harvested by centuries-old methods.

Life's a Swamp!

Wildlife abounds at Cypress Gardens. Outdoors enthusiasts and birdwatchers as well as hikers will particularly enjoy the two rambling nature trails in isolated areas of the swamp. Here visitors can share the swamp with alligators, pileated woodpeckers, wood ducks, otter, barred owls, and the other abundant species that inhabit the swamp year round.

Take a Ride on the Wild Side!
You are invited to explore Cypress Gardens, in the traditional manner, from flat bottom boat! Relax and let one of our expert boatmen do the paddling, or paddle yourself and venture off the beaten trail. Either way, a boat ride through Cypress Gardens is a unique opportunity to experience a wonderful natural habitat.
