Spoleto Festival USA
An appreciation for cultural heritage had become ingrained in Charlestonians. It was this quality—combined with the old-fashioned charm, beauty, and intimacy of the Historic District—that proved decisive when Gian Carlo Menotti chose to establish Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston. The festival has in its turn been a boon to both the city’s culture and its preservation efforts. Since the festival began in 1977, more than $500 million of public and private money has been invested in the preservation and revitalization of the city’s center. “Charleston is now more beautiful than at any time in its history,” according to Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. In addition, the influx of artists and visitors from around the world for the festival has sparked an increased interest in the arts on the local level. Each year since 1979, while Spoleto Festival USA is being held, Piccolo Spoleto Festival hosts artists from the Charleston area, with dozens of events presented throughout the city.

Focusing primarily on artists of the Southeast region, Piccolo Spoleto is the perfect complement to the international scope of its parent festival and its 700 events in 17 days, transforms Charleston into an exhilarating celebration of performing, literary and visual arts. Piccolo Spoleto's traditional program offerings include visual arts exhibits, classical music, jazz, dance, theatre, poetry readings, children's activities, choral music, ethnic cultural presentations, crafts, and film.
June 28 Carolina Day - Carolina Days of the Past
On the 28th of June 1776 the battle of Sullivan's Island was the first victory of the Patriot cause. A sizeable British fleet and army had been drubbed in a decisive way and British pride was seriously wounded. Word was rushed to Congress in Philadelphia by a single horse-borne messenger in a manner reminiscent of the battle of Marathon. The importance to American morale cannot be overstated; as news spread throughout the nation, there was rejoicing everywhere.

Mount Pleasant - On the third Saturday in September, as we have for many years, we will bring Boone Hall Plantation, just across the Cooper River from Charleston, to life with the sights and sounds of the Scottish Games and Highland Gathering. Over the years, we have added a variety of things to better the experience and the enjoyment, including bleacher style seating for the viewing of the heavy athletics, the border collie demonstrations, the 20 plus piping bands, the mass bands, and the many other activities on the field. We do it for charity, for the Scottish Society of Charleston, Inc., and for the many people and Scottish friends who seek to gather their clans and to enjoy the full day of wonderment. Each year, we strive to bring more and better Scottish and Celtic entertainment in the form of musicians and dancers to enrich the experience and we think that we have succeeded.
