Points of Interest
Historic Beaufort, South Carolina
One of your first stops should be historic Beaufort, a charming town with 500
years of history to explore. Its trademark Southern beauty is a favorite of Hollywood scouts, who've picked it for
location filming Something to Talk About, Forrest Gump, The Prince of Tides, The Great Santini and The Big Chill.
The Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center, 1006 Bay, offers a walking map to guide you past historic mansions, churches and
graveyards dating from the 1700's. Cheerful restaurants and shops dot the quaint downtown quarter beside the bay. The Center
has details on horsedrawn carriage, boat, sailboat and van tours, plus information of attractions like The Beaufort Museum. It
also sells tickets for performances of groups like the celebrated Hallelujah Singers.
Hunting Island State Park
Honored as one of the nation's top parks, 5000-acre Hunting Island is a natural treat and
Rangers conduct varied ecology programs. If the 1859 lighthouse is open, be sure to climb atop for a panoramic view of the
Sea Islands. If you fish, Hunting Island lures sea residents with an artificial reef. Paradise Pier, directly across from Fripp, expands
shoreline options for anglers.
Penn Center
Missionaries founded Penn Center in 1862 on St. Helena Island to educate freed blacks. It is now a cultural
and black studies center. A museum is open daily.
Parris Island
Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot which
graduates nearly 18,000 recruits a year, welcomes driving tours
and visits to the base museum. Ruins of French and Spanish
settlements here date from the 1500's.
Hilton Head,
Charleston, Savannah
