Location
- Greater Fort Lauderdale, right in the center of the Gold Coast,
stretches along 23 miles of the Atlantic Ocean, midway between Miami and
Palm Beach.
Size
- Greater Fort Lauderdale sprawl across 1200 square miles. Greater Fort
Lauderdale is therefore large enough to house 76 different golf courses. This county
contains 28 cities and is home to about 1.2 million residents. The largest city and
county seat, Fort Lauderdale, has about 150,000 residents. Because it has 300
miles of navigable waterways and harbors 40,000 yachts, it has been referred
to as the "Venice of America" and the "Yachting Capital of the World."
Climate
- Temperatures in this tropical climate average 77 degrees year round
with 3,000 hours of sunshine on average each year. Winter temperatures average
68 degrees while the summer brings on temperatures around 84 degrees. The
month of August is the hottest, whereas January is the coolest. The months of August
and September bring upon the heaviest rains.
Beaches
- The Fort Lauderdale area boasts 23 miles of sandy beaches that border the
Atlantic.
Vegetation
- Greater Fort Lauderdale has 505,600 acres of Everglades, containing sawgrass and
seasonally covered by slowly moving water. You may roam through this marshy land on
an airboat. Off the coast of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, 15-20 foot deep coral reefs can
be found in the Atlantic. However, coral reefs are not considered "vegetation",
but the skeletal deposits of polyps.
Shopping and Dining
- Greater Fort Lauderdale houses the world's largest discount mall.
Named after the vegetation found in the Everglades, Sawgrass Mills includes many outlet stores that
