Golf Charleston, SC
About Charleston Golf Area
South Carolina has played a key role in the development of golf in the United States from its very
beginning. The South Carolina Golf Club, founded in 1786, was the first golf course built and chartered
in America. Some 200 years later Charleston once again played a prominent role in the development of
golf in America hosting the 1991 Ryder Cup Matches - culminating with the return of the coveted Ryder
Cup trophy to America as the world watched the unforgettable play between the United States and
Europe.
Pete Dye's Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, host course for the Ryder Cup matches, is the latest in the area's
brilliant collection of truly outstanding golf courses. According to GOLF Magazine, Charleston
is home to two of the "100 Greatest Golf Courses in the world." Many golf architects have
proclaimed their Charleston area courses as "one of my best..." using nature's finest raw
materials to provide truly outstanding challenges and beauty. The list of course designers includes the
very best: Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Pete Dye, Gary Player, Tom Fazio and Rees Jones to name a
few.
Unlike many other golfing destinations, Charleston has not been discovered by the masses, resulting in
more accessible tee times with an unhurried pace. The opening of I-526 earlier this year has made
playing two courses in a day possible with time remaining for a relaxed dinner at one of Charleston's fine
restaurants.
Whether you're a weekend duffer or a scratch golfer, you're sure to find a course that is challenging
