Golf Hilton Head, SC
Arthur Hills Course
Palmetto Dunes
The newest of the Palmetto Dunes courses, the Hills course has an entirely
different character than its sister courses. Built in part on an old
secondary sand dune line, the Hills course features dramatically rolling
fairways which flow into the greens. Deep rough and fairway bunkers are
noticeably absent, but off-balance lies and ocean breezes are a constant
obstacle and lagoons come into play on 10 holes. This tends to make the
course play much more difficult than its 6,651 yards and 127 slope would
indicate. The wind, in particular, can change the entire character of the
golf course. In the 1988 Palmetto Dunes/Golf World Intercollegiate
Championship - a major college event that Palmetto Dunes has hosted since
1986 - current PGA touring pro Robert Gamez opened with a blazing 65 on the
Hills course, ballooned to a 75 in a wind-blown second round, and then
closed with a course record-tying 64.
