Golf Hilton Head, SC
Planter's Row Course
Port Royal Plantation
Port Royal Resort has recently been recognized as a "Silver
Medal" Resort by GOLF Magazine. The plantation's newest
course opened in 1983 and served as host for the Senior PGA Tour
and Hilton Head Seniors International in 1985. The Willard Byrd
design, measuring 6,520 yards from the tips, reflects the architect's
philosophy that golf is a game of accuracy. Tree-lined parallel
fairways are doffed with treacherous bunkers and water hazards,
and the large greens are severely undulating. Water comes into
play often in Planter's Row's park-like setting, which puts additional
emphasis on keeping the ball in play. A prime example is the long
par five 18th, where the second shot must find a narrow landing
area flanked by water
to the right and deep woods to the left, followed by a short pitch
to an elevated, well-bunkered green. At 552 yards, this is a demanding
finish to a challenging course.
