in a villa for most of the week- but we are going between the Marriott
Golf Resort and the Westin for the remaining couple of days we are there.
Does anyone have a preference? The Marriott was supposedly just renovated
last year and the Westin about 7 years ago. Both look nice but we would
like to go to the NICEST of the two. If you have any suggestions, please

our wedding/reception as well as photographers, florists, etc. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks My friends and I are planning to spend the summer of 2001 in Hilton

places to eat, places to see and some advice on the best of the moderately
priced golf courses. Any replies would be welcome. Thanks. My son and I are arriving on May 1st about 3:00 pm at Hilton Head
Airport and would like to play a round of golf and stay the night in a
motel. Then from the 2nd to the 5th we will be staying with a supplier and
playing at a private course. He couldn't make it for the 1st because he
has guest still in his condo. Can you provide me with some public courses

and her boyfriend are golf fanatics. The weeks we are possibly looking at
are either June 11th thru 17th or July 9th thru 15th. We would love ocean
front or oceanview. We love the ocean. We are four college friends in our mid 30's going to hilton head south
carolina in mid february. we are looking for good clubs to drink and
socialize at, any sort of fun night life activities would be helpful. your
suggestions are appreciated, thanks Can anyone give me legitimate information regarding the best way to
locate reasonable rental lodging in the Sea Pines area for August 1999? I
have received several vacation packets; but would welcome suggestions from
those who have been there. Is it beneficial to go through an agent or a
service? Or is one better off researching on their own? Serious replies
and suggestions would be appreciated. Howdy! My wife and I are planning a trip to Hilton Head Island in
March. We were considering staying at the "Comfort Inn & Suites" near
South Forest Beach. We would appreciate any feedback concerning the
quality of the motel. How are the rooms? How is the service? How is the
pool? Thank you! ----Jake and Rebecca S. 1/21/99 great place great golf 2fav. nice restaurants are 211 park and
charlestons for casual reilleys and hilton head brewing. outdoor happy
hours, scotts fishmarket and san miguel, both in shelter cove, in
harbortown the quarter deck and south beach the salty dog. For you beaver
creek co. skiers, shannon tanner entertains in hilton head at shelter cove

31, 1999 that will allow two small, very well-behaved dogs. Can do 2-4
bedrooms. Anyone know any homeowners who rent to pet owners? As a 24 year old looking for fun, my friends and I found it on Hilton
Head. We were there March of 98 during rain and nasty weather and had THE
BEST time! We found great times (hilarious people and scandal) at "BARmuda"
--HHBrew Pub & the Lodge...Monkey Business is too much fun...lots of
cheesiness though-- be prepared to laugh! You will have to avoid the Gold
Chain-disco king types. But- great music ! 80's night there is NOT to be
missed! (we saw Modern English LIVE--they played "Melt with You 3X) We
have been back 4 times for more frolicking and every time we commit at
least one night to Steamers for dinner-- FABULOUS seafood, reasonably
priced and GREAT live entertainment!! Do not waste your time or money at
the Old Oyster Factory...the waitress got mad when we wanted to share
dessert!! Pool Bar Jim's ---FANTASTIC DAQUIRIS!!! Tiki Hut-- great place
for sun and beer and pick up artists! Also-- Wild Wings is fun and right
across the street is a great after hours club that is open when everything
e lse closes ( the name escapes me right now)...anyway-- hope this tid bit
helps with the 20-something crowd looking for fun!! I am currently a junior at the University of Illinois @
Urbana/Champaign. I am searching for a summer internship position
preferably at a luxury real estate office or property management company.
I have vacationed at Hilton Head the past six summers so I am fairly
familiar with the island setup. So, if anyone has any leads for me, please
let me know! Also, if anyone knows of some reasonable lodging or if there
are other summer student interns, write me and we maybe divide the rent!
Thanks! Tim Salm
I'd like to bring my family to hh around Easter. Anything special going
on for kids under ten, or any preferred places to stay? Thanks My roommate and I are Graduate Students in Speech Pathology and will be
coming to Hilton Head this summer to work at the Hilton Head Medical
Center. We are having great difficulty finding a place to live that is not
considered a summer vacation spot or a resort. We are on limited funds and
would appreciate any suggestions on affordable summer housing. Thanks! To Whom It May Concern, I am a resposible student looking for an
exciting summer job. Do you have programs for college students to work and
stay there in the summer? Thanks :) Hi. My friends and I are looking to find a job in Hilton Head, or
another resort town to work over the summer of '99. We are willing to work
hard to save money for our junior year at college. If anyone has any
information, please get in touch with me. Thanks. We've booked a 2BR condo at Tennismaster Villas in Shipyard Plantation
for July 99. Would appreciate any comments from anyone who has stayed
there as well as addtional suggestions for activities and dining.
Thanks!P,S. This is our first trip to HHI I was thinking about getting a job for the summer in a resturaunt in
hilton head. So I can expand my knowledge of the food service industry.
Any help would be appreciated. submitted November 1998. I am planning to take my elderly parents to Hilton Head in November for
1 week. I am having a hard time finding a place that will accept a small,
older, gentle, housebroken dog. If anyone can help, it would be greatly
appreciated. October 27, 1998 Are there any good places on HHI that offer aerobic classes? We have visited HHI several times and enjoy it so much we're going
again. Several times we have gotten reservations through a place called
(we think) Island Reservations which was located just off the island. A
very nice person named Ruth always helped us. We have lost her number and
have been unable to find anything on the net. Can anyone out there help?
We plan to leave for HHI within the next couple of days. Any info will be
appreciated. Oct 1, 1998 all the "guides" reference paid advertisers; check here for
truth. Staying Disney resorts, did Scott's at Shelter Harbour (ok, nice
outdoor patio with so-so duo on vocal and variety of instruments); did
CQ's at Harbourtown (upscale, attentive, decent choice of wines at no
bargain, excellent food); Sunset Grille at Jenkins road (fantastic
everything, including sunset view, at reasonable prices, super wines and
prices, incredible desserts, awesome appetizers with cajun fried oysters
on gorgonzola cream sauce [yes, great!], friendly folks, inexpensive, we
liked as much as 4X-the-price CQ's); Outback (very good, as expected);
lunch, Cornerstone Grille at Factory Stores II (better than expected
food). Played golf at RT Jones, T Fazio, Island West and Old South. The
first two are friendly; the latter two can eat you alive. All in top
condition. Note: it's so humid, NOBODY walks a course here. Us northerners
really suffer. But we keep coming back. My 19 year-old son and I spent a week in Hilton Head this month. as we
have done most summers for the last 15 years. This trip we experienced two
restaurants that you must add to your don't miss list: I spent a year on Hilton Head and I still miss it dreadfully. As a Brit
Abroad I found it most welcoming and full of things to do (in the Summer
at least). My favourite late night hangout was Hinchey's or Moneypennies
and The Brew Pub on Wednesday 70's night. Good places to eat are The Old
Oyster Factory, CQ's (gorgeous Sous Chef called Josh - tell him I said hi
if you see him!) and Wings for just that! To all my buddies at the Hilton
Resort including Bobby Ryder the star that he is and Lawson who worked the
Buoy Bar like noone else. Okay that's it, love to you all, see you again
and all that! We'll be in HH Aug. 24 for several days. We have two teenage boys who
love jet skiing....any ideas for rentals? Or other ideas of things to do
on the island. We'll be staying in Harbor Town. Thanks. E Fleming FOTOL8Y@aol.com
I have been a supermarket manager for 20 years and i have recently
vacationed on Hilton Head Island and would like employment information on
the supermarkets on the Island or web site addresses so that I may contact
them about a possible career in hilton Head. Thank you trying to find information re: hilton head health institute and/or
dother resorts in/on hilton head. Information not available on your site
or thru Yahoo/other search engines. Only listing was location on map and
telephone #. your information is sketchy at best. Sorry information was
not available. 3D My family and I recently visited Hilton Head for the first time the
island is a great place to stay. We visited on one of Spinnaker's
timeshare sales specials. DONOT!!! I repeat DONOT ever stay at The Players
Club Resort. The rooms are extremely nasty smelly and extrememly nasty.
These are the accommodations Spinnaker provided for their perspective
property owners. To have Resort even in the name of The Player's Club
Resort is a very misleading advertisement. Very dissatisfied customer...
I am posting my comments to this site about our first vacation visit to
H= HI. We vacationed the week of 20-25 July 1998, it was sure hot and very
humid that week. We stayed at the Radisson Suite Resort which I would rate
onl= y average at best, however it was more affordable than many of the
accommodations at the various plantation resort areas. We had some
relatives staying at the Carolina Club in Shipyard Plantation, which gave=
us the opportunity to visit there many times during the week. Shipyard
Plantation=92s facilities and grounds were beautiful. I can sympathize w=
ith Joyce Mara who posted a comment to this travelogue on 5/18/98 and
comment= ed about HHI being an island of "gated" communities. To a certain
extent sh= e is correct. Unless you are staying in one of these "gated"
communities, = own a condo or timeshare there, or are fortunate to be
guests of someone vacationing there (as was our case), you do not get the
chance to see maj= or portions of this beautiful island and I feel that
can be most unfortunate. Here are some of the things we did that we
enjoyed: 1) Went on a dolphin cruise out of Broad Creek Marina on the S.S.
Pelican, which was very enjoyable. The captain related some very
interesting history and information about areas and properties along the
shore line. 2) As suggested many times on this travelogue we had dinner
out one night at Fitzgerald=92s. The meal was excellent with very good
service; 3) Watch= ing the fireworks at Shelter Cove on Tuesday evening;
4) Enjoyed riding bicycles one morning around the island near and on
Shipyard Plantation; 5= ) For something to do off the island we did a day
trip to Charleston, SC, t= o visit Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, and
then did a visit to Fort Sumte= r (a very interesting Civil War era
National Monument); 6) We also enjoyed = a round of miniature golf our
last evening at Legendary Golf at 900 William Hilton Parkway. We had a
very enjoyable week and would go back again to HHI, however I fe= el May
or June may be better for less heat and humidity. Next time however,= I
think we will try to make arrangements to stay in one of the "gated"
communities. -- Alan Warminski , submitted 8/11/1998 3D Can you give me names of any kennels to keep my dog during our stay
in Hilton Head?? Just came back from an enjoyable vacation at HHI 08/11 as usual. We
stayed at Port O'Call in Ship Yard Plantation. We highly recommend Hilton
Head Brewing Co. especially the Rasberry Wheat Beer. We had a bad
experience at The Salty Dog Cafe and will NEVER go back due to poor
juvenile service. The Quarterdeck in Sea Pines is also a gret place to
eat. Go early then enjoy Gregg Russell under the tree! Have Fun! My husband, 14 yr-old daughter and I have recently returned to Northern
Ireland from our holiday in Charleston and Hilton Head Island. We stayed
at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Shipyard for two weeks. For anyone coming
from a colder climate, the heat (in the 90's) takes some time to get used
to, but we loved the wide beach, the waves, the alligators, turtles and
birds, and the excellent service we encountered almost everywhere. We just returned from HHI(8/1-8/8) and loved it. The weather was
perfect, beach was beautiful, and the area was wonderful. If you read this
travelogue often, then you know that the Gazman has rated pretty much all
of the restaurants in the area. But here are a few he has missed HHI
BREWING CO. is a pretty good microbrewerey, with 4 local brews always on
tap. The sandwiches are big and are very good. If traveling with kids, try
going on Sunday, where Kidfest is held just outside the
restaurant(jugglers, magicians, balloon artists, etc.) ABES SHRIMP HOUSE
is also very good for down home cooking and soul food. But it is very
popular and crowded. A couple of locals took us to 211 PARK BISTRO.
Although the atmosphere was nice, the food left a lot to be desired. The
pork chop was overcooked, the sea bass pasta was just ok, and while the
waiter raved about having one of the best filets on the island, I found it
to be tasteless. A good filet does not need to be smothered in mushrooms
and onions! All in all a huge disappointment!!. The second place they told
us about was JUST PASTA CAFE. A quaint little place located in Coligny
plaza. Small and intimate(only 8 tables), you pick you type of pasta, then
pick the type of sauce (6 different types), and then pick the add ins such
as chicken, veggies, shrimp, etc. All pastas come with ceaser sald and a
fresh baked italian loaf of bread from the bakery next door. Very good,
and very reasonable. Can't wait until next year. My family, ages 3-53 will be at Hilton Head in September,1998,looking
for good restaurants, bike rentals, boat tours(rentals), best areas for
nature photography, best places to go to see Dolphins. Since I am a
photographer, need to know where to go. This is my first time to HH. How
can I get a map of HH? Need to know the best places for a 27 year old male
to go to have fun also. Would possibly like to go see Savannah, if time
allows. Any suggestions for that? Jan Briggs 8/10/98 Has anyone stayed at a nice RCI(Resort Condominiums International)
resort? We are planning a trip next summer and need advice on where to
stay. We want an ocean view. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My family went to Hilton Head Island for the first time in mid July
1998. We will never go back again. We love to drive around and see the
area. We couldn't unless we wanted to pay $5 to enter another area. The
developments certainly are generic -- no creativity in the "architecture".
We've stayed at many condo hotels on the west coast and in Hawaii where
service means something. At the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort,
housekeeping and fresh towels were extra $$$. The "resort" didn't even
provide dish soap or a dish towel so the dishes could be done. I didn't
know I was at a "rental" where I had to bring my own supplies. The traffic
was horrible and the roads poorly designed. The people who worked at
various places were unfriendly and didn't know their surroundings.
Restaurants were overpriced. The only good experience we had was with the
Tennis Center at HH Beach and Tennis Resort. The pros were friendly,
enthusiastic and helpful to my 11 and 14 year old players. I am a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in
environmental engineering, civil engineering business classes and some
German. I would like to work in the south , . I would like to know of any
job opportunities. Thank You I am looking for a quite place that will accomodate 18 people. This can
be split in two places if nessasary. Request would be on beach, pool,
spacious living area. Since I am in charge of putting a family reunion
together I would like to see if Hilton Head is the right place for us. We
just returned from a week in Mrytle Beach and it was a nightmare, trash
accomadations, and very rude people. Hi, I am 25 and live in Michigan and would love to find employment on
Hilton Head Island at the end of the year. If anyone has some beneficial
information regarding employment and housing, please drop me an Email. Any
information would be greatly appreciated. Can anyone reccommend the Savannah cruises? We are coming down, again,
in Sept. and would love to see the old downtown area. Do you get enough
time on a cruise or should we drive ourselves? Is it worth the $ to not
have to worry with parking etc? Any advice appreciated. I am heading for Hilton Head next week(7-22-98) for a quick visit with
my husband and 2 children ages 5 and 8. Please recommend the best dolphin
cruise or anything else that would be enjoyable to my entire family. We
enjoy nature and a casual atmosphere. Thanks!! I am a single mother of two daughters- 15 and 6. We are planning to
vacation on Hilton Head next summer and are looking for a 2 bedroom condo
to rent. We have vacationed on Hilton Head many times and have always
stayed in the Sea Pines area. Some of the places we have stayed are Lagoon
Villas, Gleneagle Green, etc. This is the type of condos we are interested
in. I have written to several rental agencies and they have sent me rates
which seem much higher than I remember paying before. So I wondered if
there were any condo owners out there who handle their own rentals (at
perhaps a better rate). The things we really enjoy on the island are
bicycling, beaching, swimming in a good pool, good restaurants, and
exploring. Please let me know if you have anything available. My friends and I are looking to stay in Hilton Head Island next summer,
1999. I know that this is way far in advance, but we are looking for a
somewhat inexpensive place to live. There will probably be 3-4 of us, and
we would not mind a 2-4 bedroom place! Please contact me with some
information or a website that I can read to start our search. We are
planning to simply be waitresses or something, is that also in demand in
the beginning of the summer? Thanks! My family (age 20-73)just returned from HHI. We enjoyed golf, fishing,
swimming in ocean, trip to Penn Center on St Helena. We stayed in my
timeshare in N. Forest Beach. Coligny Plaza was a real convenience.
Enjoyed Steamers at Coligny; short walk to beach. We found everyone to be
friendly. We "discovered" African American (as well as many other)
families well represented at Abe's Native Shrimp House. Are there other
restaurants, clubs on the island that African American families enjoy? My family is planning a stay for a week at the Disney Resort on Hilton
Head Island later this month. Anyone want to offer some advice on the
place, or things in general to do etc. We have a 14 year old girl as well
as an 18 year old boy with his girlfriend....... Thanks folks !! My wife and I, and friends of ours returned from HHI 4/25/98, and had a
pretty good time. We stayed at the PLanters Quarters at Port Royal
Plantation, which was very very nice....& quiet! These timeshares are gold
crown rated with RCI and are huge! Three bedrooms, three baths(jacuzzi's
in two), living, dining, & sunrooms. This timeshare gives you access to
the Westin Resort health club, and outdoor areas...very nice. Since were
mainly golfers, we tried various golf course on or near the island. Hi! Last year someone told me that they heard there was a place at
Hilton head where you could arrange to swim with dolphins. Is this true or
was it just a rumor? I can't find any literature on the net about this.
Thanks! C. West I am looking to move to Hilton Head Island and would like some
information on employment agencies or opportunities. I am a college
graduate with 5 years of sales experience and would like to relocate to
Hilton Head. Anyone who has and information that would assist my efforts
please email me. Thank you. J.B. We will be in Hilton Head from June 26-July 2. We are trying to
determine which deep sea fishing outfits are the best for adults and young
teens. A half day trip is what we want (3-4 hours). And what time of day
is best for fishing during that time - morning or afternoon? Thanks! My wife and I are planning atrip to HHI in July via our 26' RV. Does
anyone have any advice on where we should stay? I have been abel to find
two RV Resorts, one is the Hilton Head RV Resort and Yacht Club. It looks
nice in the brochure but looks like a long way from the beach. It is on
the intercoastal waterway. The other one is Outdoor Resorts Motor Coach
Resort. It doesnt' appear to be as nice but is only about a half mile from
the beach. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 3DI am interested in locating information from Hilton Head.
Travel-lodging-points of interest.=20 We are heading back to HH for our second summer. This year we'd like to
arrange a tour to Dafuskie Island. Anyone with any tips, please advise.
Thanks for your help! 3DHilton Head GOLF Information: There are a lot of courses on the
island and just off the island too. The green's fees can be high so
getting a "deal" is worth looking into. The best deal I found is "LAST
MINUTE TEE TIMES." This guy gets deeply discounted tee times froma number
of courses in the area. Call him at 689-2289 from 7-10PM in the evenings
and he can tell you what he has available the next day. Sea Pine's famous
Harbourtown course is really pricey and probably not worth it unless you
JUST have to play it. The Ocean course and the Sea Marsh courses there are
fun tracks. The three nines at Shipyard are good as well. A lot of the
condos there like Port of Call, etc. have golf packages included with
their rentals so there are a lot of folks on the course that haven't a
clue how to play the game sometimes. The Arthur Hills and Fazio courses at
Palmetto Dunes are good. The Palmetto Hall courses are good too. The 3
courses at Port Royal=20 have a beautiful clubhouse... 3DGENERAL ADVICE from Gerry from VAIL : Upon your arrival at HHI, go by
any supermarket, shopping mall, etc. and pick up free copies of the
current issue of "Island Events"....HHI RESTAURANTS...(which will give you
the actual menus and prices of most of the restaurants on the island)...
The "Golfers Guide"...which will ist the courses in the area ...and buy a
copy of the "Island Packet" which is the local newspaper and only costs 25
cents. It will give you a capsule of the national news and fill you in on
what is going on locally. Pick up a map of the island. It will be in most
of the Real Estate pubs and will help you in navigating your way around
the island. Actually the place is pretty simple. The main Hwy. (Rte 278 -
William Hilton Pkwy.) comes over the bridge and goes around the island
which is shaped like a tennis shoe with the toe pointing left. It goes
past Hilton Head Plantation, Indigo Run, Palmetto Hall, and at Port Royal
which is on the=20 "heel" it begins to curve around. My wife and I are thinking of going to Hilton Head in Novemeber. What
is the weather generally like? Are there activities going on at this time.
We don't want to go at a "down" time of the year. szagzebs@wausau.com To: Hilton Head Travelogue BEGIN USER INPUT Once again, on April 15th, my wife and I left High Country of Vail, Colorado after another great ski year to escape what is know as "Mud Season" in Vail and go to Hilton Head where we stayed until our return at the end of May. I can't think of a better place to get a head start on sunshine and summer than at this very special and wonderful island just N. of Savannah, GA. It's got it all....great golf...beaches...restaurants.. tennis...bike trails and close proximity to both Savannah and Beaufort, SC which are oozing with Southern charm. The new Cross Island Expressway was being built last year and is now open. For a buck, if you are going to Sea Pines, Shipyard or the Forest Beach area, you can save a little time during crowded times. Unfortunately, the speed limit is only 45 and the local cops are hiding and waiting to pounce if you go faster, so if you are staying at Palmetto Dunes or any other place from there back to the bridge, you would be probably be better off just staying on William Hilton Parkway. By the way...be careful driving on the Island. Route 278 (William Hilton Highway) is the "main drag" and although divided, you have folks going well over the 45 MPH speed limit and some older folks creeping along in their Lincoln Town Cars at 25MPH and hardly a day went by that I didn't see an accident. Drive defensively and don't let a fender bender ruin your vacation. Here is an update of my previous comments for those who choose to read them. I must say that I have been amazed at the amount of E-Mail I have received from folks all over the USA and in one case...as far away as Great Britain from a lovely couple who live in London where he is a Dentist and she is a Industrial Psychologist. They ended up coming to HHI during the 1st two weeks we were there and, following my advice, they rented a house in Shipyard Plantation just down the street from our place there and we not only met, we played some tennis and had dinner together a couple of times. It's a small World. Meanwhile....on to the '98 update..... Again....I would heartily suggest that anyone arriving on the island, pick up a copy of a free booklet called " Hilton Head Island RESTAURANTS." You can find it anywhere from shopping malls to super markets to condo rental offices. It will give you a listing of most of the restaurants on the island complete with their menus and prices not only alphabetically by name, but by category...i.e. Seafood, Continental, American, etc. There are probably at least 200 places to eat and they range from excellent to just plain awful. I'll try to help you find the right place for your tastes. At this point, I must comment that, in looking at some of the submissions to the Hilton Head Island Travelogue, there are obviously a wide variance in opinions of what is good and what is bad. While I can certainly enjoy casual dining in a simple place, my wife, who is a gourmet cook and I, who am a member of the famous international gourmet and wine society...the Chaine des Rotisseurs, appreciate fine dining and service on certain occasions. To start with...I suggest you read my comments on the best....and the worst places (obviously in my opinion) that I submitted last year. I went back to a number of the best places this year and even gave some of the other ones a second chance after reading some positive comments by other folks after my departure last year. Let's start with the GOOD places. The OLD FORT PUB on Hilton Head Plantation still has great food....views at sunset... but the service has declined in my opinion. I took a party of 8 there for dinner there and was amazed that the white wine was served "room temperature" and it had to be placed in a bucket of ice before it was drinkable. The waitress, while very nice, was rarely to be seen during the evening. This was kind of sad since the place does have a lot going for it and maybe they need to increase their wait staff. If you want the best in food and service and a great view isn't as important as the overall ambiance and the dining experience itself....then...NENO iL TOSCANO is the place. Located in the Festival Center next to the Publix super market (by the way, this Publix has the BEST Key Lime pies with a graham cracker crust I've ever eaten...if you are eating in.....Get Some!)....Neno's features...fabulous N. Italian cuisine.with entrees priced from $14 to about $20. Food this good in most major cities would be at least double in price and Neno's wine list is extensive and fairly priced. This elegant place is definitely not for the Shoneys, Fudruckers, Wild Wings, Big Bamboo crowd. If you go....tell Neno...you heard about it from Gerry from Vail. This Italian gentleman will make sure you have a great dining experience. CQ's at Harbour Town is still very nice as is Cafe Europa. This year we had a waiter at Cafe Europa who, despite our mentioning that we would pass on an appetizer since we had come directly from having some drinks and appetizers on a yacht there at Harbour Town owned by some friends...he keep trying to push us into buying some of their appetizers. Maybe this was only an aberration and his aggressive manner was a product of his New York City upbringing (he made a point to tell us was where he was from). The good news is that the food arrived piping hot and was delicious. While I'm talking about Harbour Town, I mentioned the entertainment at the Harbourside Cafe last year. Great place for Happy Hour. This year they featured an African-American trio that played some laid back steel drum reggae and on 3 other nights a week a talented female singer and flute player was accompanied by her keyboard playing male partner as they played a mixture of easy to listen to music. It's a great place to check out the fabulous yachts and watch the sun go down....but the food there is awful so go elsewhere. Speaking of Happy Hour places....several people mentioned the Salty Dog Cafe located in Sea Pines at the S. Seaport Marina....I'm sorry...I think their best product is selling tee shirts. Kind of like HHI's version of the world famous hamburger and tee shirt emporiums know as the Hard Rock Cafes. TRUFFLES is still one of my favorites. Located at the Sea Pines Center...just about a mile down the road from Harbour Town...it offers great food in an eclectic setting at very reasonable prices and their desserts...like the "Mud Pie" are sinfully sensational. The OLD OYSTER FACTORY continues to amaze me at the crowds it draws. It is a very attractive BIG place on Marshland Rd overlooking Broad Creek that offers a wide variety of moderately priced food. This year...one of my guests had to send his fish back...it was extremely overcooked...but the good news is that they graciously took it back and returned with one that was just right in no time at all. A funny thing happened there that I'll share with you. Upon arrival, we were told we would have about a 20 minute wait and that there was some entertainment and a bar on the dock out back. We went out there and soon discovered that there was something else out there that was not advertised....namely...the pesky little bugs that come out in the late afternoon and early evening called "No-See-ums." While they are so tiny you can hardly see them...they must be all mouths and they can bite real good. Everyone was scratching their heads and slapping their exposed body parts including the entertainers whom I felt sorry for. Once we were seated, we had a table at a window overlooking the dock and were entertained by watching the unsuspecting customers arrive on the dock and immediately start scratching and wondering what was attacking them. The Old Oyster Factory is an OK place....but not sensational. Having read some comments from some folks praising some places I had panned a year ago....I foolishly decided to give two of them another look in '98. WILD WINGS was mentioned as a great place by some folks who vacationed there and I must admit that their chicken wings are excellent....however....the LOUD rock and roll music make them pretty hard to digest. I would suggest ordering carry-out if you must have them and pass on the smoke infested bar atmosphere and eat them at the place you are staying. Another place that numerous folks have written in about was "The BIG BAMBOO" at Coligny Circle. I thought it was dark and dismal last year and it's WW II theme was a little "cutesy" and strange for a beach place...but I thought I'd give it another shot in '98. Sorry folks, its still DARK & DISMAL with really MEDIOCRE food from a confusing menu that offers a strange variety of things from their "War-Dog" to meatloaf and California veggie wraps. All the cutesy bamboo in the world couldn't make this place a good place to eat. This S. Forest beach hangout is the place to go if you think putting on a sleeve-less Tee shirt or a tank top is fine casual attire and the nachos at the ball park are gourmet food. You'll feel right at home with the other folks who love this place. Aaaaargh ! Another spot mentioned by a number of folks was AUNT CHILADAS on Pope Ave. Again...it is close to Coligny Circle and a lot of people who come to Hilton Head and find a reasonable place to stay in the S. Forest Beach area frequent it. The menu is a dead give away...in that it features both Mexican and Italian food. Huh!!!! The result is very average food at higher prices than the quality should suggest. The decor was a little strange and looked like it had been picked up at a garage sale somewhere. It featured a fake bird perched on a large ring but the bird was not at the bottom, but rather sitting cock-eyed at an angle part way up. We decided to try it the night we arrived and were soon joined by a bus tour group of senior citizens that had a "package deal dinner" there. Our young waitress, tried her best, but had the annoying habit of referring to everyone as "Guys"....as in..."Have you guys decided on what you want?.....How's the food Guys?.....Can I get you Guys anything else? " etc. It was kind of amusing to see here continue that line of banter with a long table full of blue haired 70 to 80 year old ladies next to us. I would bet the same crowd that loves Wild Wings and the absolutely horrible Big Bamboo thinks this is the greatest. That's the beauty of HHI....there's something there for everyone. No....I didn't even think about giving HENRY's another try this year....it has taken about a year for my stomach to get over it last time so that was enough for me. The CAFE @ WEXFORD is a cute little place that features reasonably priced french food and we enjoyed it last year. This year, we took a couple from Colorado that had come to visit us there on the Sunday that was Mother's Day and we surprised to see that they had not only reduced their menu that evening, but had cranked up the prices about 50% as well. Gouging the public is not the way to win friends and influence people. We alternated eating out about 2/3's of the time with eating in at our place and once again found the wonderful seafood at great prices offered up by BARNACLE BILL's to be fabulous. Every day he gets in extremely fresh seafood at his stand on William Hilton Parkway between Palmetto Dunes and Port Royal on the W. side of the road (Shelter Cove side). We enjoyed Wahoo, fresh Salmon, jumbo Shrimp, Oysters, Blue Crabs, Tuna, and Sea Bass which was cooked and smoked on our grill and it was sensational. He can even get you live Maine Lobsters if you give him a day's notice. So...if you want to pick up a bottle of wine and enjoy some great seafood at your place there....go see Bill and be sure to tell him that Gerry from Vail told you to come see him. I guarantee he will treat you right. ABE's Native Shrimp House is located not far from Barnacle Bill's as you head toward Shelter Cove and features a $10.95 "Early Bird" buffet. I had read about it in a golf magazine so we decided to try it. This African-American family has been there since 1968 and features down home cooking including fried fish, BBQ ribs, okra and chicken but..while the food is plentiful and filling...it is pretty heavy and not for someone who is trying to watch their weight. It was also pretty hot in there in May and their A/C is barely working so be forewarned. Interesting ! As for GOLF.....really no changes from last year in that I played a number of the courses both on and off island including the famous Harbour Town Golf Links and found all of them to be a lot of fun. Pick up the local paper....the "Island Packet" which is 25 cents and you can find advertised deals on golf in it. If you are staying at a condo or hotel resort, they often have deals on golf or packages available which will reduce your cost of playing. One new course I played this year was the Golden Bear Golf Course at Indigo Run Plantation a couple of times and enjoyed it. It features on board computerized screens on each golf cart that tell you how far you've hit your drive...how far it is to the green from anywhere on the course and the clubhouse has a monitor showing where every cart is on the course at all times. Very unique. If you are into TENNIS....and are staying at a Plantation, you should check with the club there regarding their programs. At Shipyard Plantation, they had a round-robin doubles mixer every afternoon from 4 - 5:30 PM on the clay courts for only $10 per person with wine and beer afterwards. A great way to meet some other folks and have a lot of fun. Again...if you need additional advice or suggestions send me an E-Mail
and I'll do my best to get back to you. Hilton Head is a great place to
spend your vacation and if you decide to go, I hope you love it as much as
we do. All the Best...GERRY from VAIL. (gazman@colorado.net) My wife and I and friends just returned from HHI (june 3, 1998). We had
a wonderfull time. The island is a great place for families, very
relaxing, and a huge beach. We stayed at the Disney Resort, a great place
to stay. Disney also has it's own Beach House on the ocean in Palmetto
Dunes. We really like the Hilton Head Diner, just below Shelter Cove
Harbor. The food was great, breakfast, lunch or dinner. It has a huge menu
and the service was fast. We also liked Guiseppi's, located in Shelter
Cove Plaza. Great pizza and you must try a "weggie". There are several
very good mini-golf places for children and adults. Had lots of fun there.
We did some shopping at the factory outlets in Buffton on the mainland,
just over the bridge. We took a dolphin cruise on a 20 foot patoon boat(
holds 6 people) down the broad creek. We saw about 20 dolphins, some came
right up to the boat. Our guide was great. We plan to make HHI our only
place to go to the beach. Richard M. Smith, Lincolnton N.C. rsmith@tntie.com
Hello, I live in Lebanon, Tennessee. I was recently contacted by
Spinnaker resorts. I purchased a vacation package from them. They say that
we are booked at Players Club Resorts. Is this company and resort actually
there? Please respond. I appreciate your time. Thanks, Regina Killman We are planning a trip to hhi on june 13th. we are staying in a condo.
Do you know if there is a place where we can rent a crib. We have a 2 year
old? Also if you had to choose to do one thing while there what would it
be. We dont golf and with a 2 y.o. its difficult to do the normal things.
Thanks for your time. We're thinking of a visit to HH in late July/early August. I notice
most people in the Travelogue have visited in winter or early spring. Is
the weather unbearably hot in late July/early August? I've spent time in
the Outer Banks in the summer and found it comfortable due to the ocean
breezes. Please give me your thoughts on HH weather during that time
period!! When (during what weeks of August/September) is the best time to visit
HHI? My wife and I are planning our first visit and would prefer to visit
after the peak summer season ends but when the weather is still great.
Also, what areas of HHI are best for a 30ish couple w/o children. We like
peace and tranquility--not "wild times!" We like to be on or near the
beach, but like to avoid areas that attract primarily school-age children
and senior citizens. Send comments to rwwilson@wku.campus.mci.net. Thank
you. Having just returned from a disapointing trip to Hilton Head, I would
like to contribute one piece of information to this travel log. Hilton
Head is an island of 'gated' communities. If you are not staying in the
community, you cannot go in. If you cannot go in, you cannot see the
ocean. The only access we had to the beach was walking a few blocks and
cutting through the Holiday Inn parking lot. We found it very frustrating
to be on a small island and not be able to see the ocean as we drove
around. We ended up cutting our stay short because of this and really
wished we had known ahead of time. What we did see of the island was
lovely, we did go to Harbor Town (you pay $5 to go into that gated
community) which was nice. We golfed at a couple courses just off the
island, Rose Hill and Island West, which were super. Not sure if we will
go back, if we do we will be sure to stay inside! A bunch of my buddies and I were looking for someplace to go and relax
after our medical school board exam in June and we decided on Hilton Head.
I haven't been to Hilton Head since I've been old enough to go out, so I
was wondering if anyone out there could suggest some of the good bars that
are down there. We're staying in South forest beach, so bars that are
around there would be great. Thanks, Aaron Wittenberg This is our first trip to H.H. We are spending our summer vacation in
Palmetto Dunes, June 13-20th. Our children are 8 and 4 yrs. old. Any
suggestions on family activities and are there any babysitting services ?
Is there an age limit on the golf courses? Can you also recommend a good
restaurant. (one for adults and one for the kids.) WE WILL BE VISITING IN JULY AND WILL BE STAYING IN CENTRE COURT VILLA
IN PALMETTO DUNES. ANY ONE EVER STAYED THERE? ANY INFO. ABOUT THE AREA?
THANKS! 5/98 Our family looking to visit Hilton Head in July or August. We are a
family of 6 and are looking to rent a 3 or 4 beedroom house in Sea Pines.
Our family loves the beach and would like a home situated within close
walking distance to the beach. Would prefer to deal with the owner
directly but will entertain offers from rental agencies. Please e-mail me
with information on your property includingt availability and pricing.
Thank you. Bachelor Party: That's why I'm coming to Hilton Head. I've never been
and I must show the groom one heckuva night. Any ideas (wink, wink, nudge,
nudge)? we are going to hilton head in may and I would like to know where I
could rent a crib for a baby. Please let me know if you have any
suggestions. Thank you. ckburke@msn.com I'm going to HH for the first time for a couple of days at the
beginning of May. I wanted a place on the beach, and the most reasonable
one I've found seems to be teh Beach and Tennis Resort on Folly Field
Road. I have no idea, though, where on the island this is (i.e. nice area?
far from everything else? etc.) If anyone could help me out, I'd really
appreciate it. Thanks -- Andy My husband and I will be staying at the Island Club at Folly Field in
May 98 (with our 2 1/2 year old). We would appreciate any comments on the
Island Club resort and suggestions for things to do with a small child.
Are the dolphin or dinner cruises a good idea? Suggestions for nice (kid
friendly) restaurants? Thanks! april 19, 1998 we have just returned from another wonderful spring
break on HHI. As always we frequented our favorite restaurants: Wild
Wings, our tradtional first night meal, can't beat cold beer and hot wings
to get a vacation started. Our very favorite spot is Steamers located in
Coligny Plaza, defintely the best seafood on the island. We ended up
eating there three nights out of six this trip the food and service was so
good. For great pizza you have to try Pizza Chef. We have tried several
others on the island but this is by far the best. Already looking forward
to going back this summer to try some of the recommendations I've read
here. My husband and I are planning our first trip to Hilton Head Island in
mid July. What is considered the best hotel resort, the Hilton, Hyatt, or
the Westin? We are looking for the best in accommodations, ambiance,
setting, service, etc. Thanks so much, J. Doesschate My wife and I just got back from our HH vacation (4/3/98 - 4/7/98). We
had a GREAT time. We used many of the recommendations from submissions to
this site, so we wanted to contribute our opinions as well. For
accommodations, we stayed at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort, in
an Ocean Front Villa. It was nice, clean, and inexpensive. Folly Beach is
clean and quiet. Our only complaint is that we felt we were away from the
real "action". Most of the cool places to go were about 5 miles down 278
towards Sea Pines and Coligny plaza. When we go again, we'll probably stay
in Palmetto Dunes, or somewhere near Forest Beach. Those seem to be the
best places for the 20-somethings. The food selections were great. Our
favorites, in order, were Steamers, Makotos and Shuckers. Excellent
service at them all and the ambiance (sp?) was very nice at Steamers and
Makotos. Shuckers was a little out of the way and desolate. The Salty Dog
was ok, but we were expecting something more. The location of SD is great
and it seems to be a good hangout spot. The Wild Wing Cafe also probably
is a happening place, but we went for lunch on a weekday, and it was just
alright. I did like the different flavors of wings, though. We went to
Coconuts Comedy Club and ordered gourmet pizza that they bring in from a
pizza shop across the street (don't remember the name). It had to be the
best gourmet pizza we've ever had. Try the Vegetarian. There is plenty of
other things to do there; enough to be able to go back consistently and
never have the exact same experience. We had a chance to go to the finals
of the Family Circle Cup and had an awesome time. We'll be doing that
again. Island Water Sports was very good for waverunners and parasailing.
The employees were very friendly, yet professional. For a beach
experience, we recommend Forest Beach. It had the most people on it. Make
sure to go bike riding, its almost impossible to avoid it. We don't golf,
but we enjoyed playing at several of the mini-golf places. We really like
the The Pirates Island Adventure golf course. Oh yeah, and we enjoyed the
Dolphin Cruise at Broadcreek Marina. We spent almost a whole day shopping
at the outlets in Bluffton. Bluffton is across the bridge from HHI, but it
is probably only a 15-20 minute car drive away from most places on the
Island. We'll definitely be coming back to HH for years to come. Help.....anyone who LIVES and is not vacationing in Hilton
Head.....need information on local realtors and relocation information.
Please help?????? Sincerely, Nicole Hello, my name is Michael Stock and I am a college student looking for
work down in Hilton Head as soon as I get out of school. I was wondering
if you would be able to give me the number of a job placement center down
there. I will be coming down with four other people also seeking jobs. I
will be leaving from Pittsburgh,PA. April 27th. Thank yo for your time.
Michael Stock University of Pittsburgh 412-648-3737 mjsst103+@pitt.edu My family just (4/4/98) returned from HHI - we stayed for a week at HHI
Beach and Tennis Resort and enjoyed it greatly. The villa was convenient
to the pool and the beach and was extremely clean and reasonably priced.
Boat House II was my favorite place to eat on the Island. Can't wait to go
back later this summer. Alan Cheatham Seymour, TN I'll be visiting HHI (5TH time!) with my family and friends next week
(4/11-18). Any advice on inland fishing charters that accomodate eight (2
adults/6 kids)? So far, I've found six to be the max. Also, any advice on
getting tickets to the MCI Heritage Classic? Thanks! I will be living in Hilton Head the summer after I graduate (May of
'99). I have found information on places to stay but am interested in
finding a summer job. I will graduate with a double major in Social Work
and HDFS. Any advice on how to go about finding a job would be greatly
appreciated. thanks. PLEASE HELP!!!! WE NEED A NICE, CLEAN, CONDO OR VILLA WHICH WILL ACCEPT
A SMALL HOUSEBROKEN, WELL BEHAVED OLDER DOG. ANY INFO. WOULD BE GREATLY
APPRECIATED. 3-23-98 For the last two years the Winona State Women's Tennis team has
traveled to Hilton Head to compete against other tennis teams. Though the
weather didn't cooperate this year (mar. 1 thru mar. 12) we still had a
great time. Hilton Head offers everything from quiet beaches to fabulous
night life. Our accommedations (Beach and Tennis resort) have always been
comfortable and affordable. I love the Island and can't wait to return
next year. March 20, 1998 Hi, My name is Bill and Hilton Head is awesome!!! I have
been going there ever since I was 10 years old. I am now 23. Hilton Head
has wonderful bike trails. They are very uncrowded and allow you to become
part of nature. Some of my favorite restruants are Alexanders, the Oyster
Factory, and Reilly's. My favorite hotel is the Westin Resort. Although
the rooms are expensive, you can't beat the ocean view. The pool-side
facilities are excellant. The Westin also has an outstanding seafood
buffet 7 days a week. Fishing is great...My dad discovered that the best
place to fish was in a lagoon on the golf course. Within minutes the bass
started biting. As my mother would say, watch out for the Alligators. One
day when she was taking out the trash, a dog rubbed its nose against my
mother's leg and she screamed thinking it was an alligator. Thank goodness
it wasn't an alligator!! If you are ever chased by an alligator, remember
to run in a zigzag. If you like birds, Hilton Head has a ton of them.
Well, I just wanted to tell you about some of the highlights. Hi...Mom and
Dad! Take me back to Hilton Head! Please send hilton Head info to us both at your convenience. thank you.

Staying at the Crowne Plaza. Our package includes 2for1 golf at Shipyard
Plantation or Port Royal; complimetary golf at Island Westor Rose Hill
Country Club. Considering the budget, and maybe a total of 3 rounds of
golf, any suggestions? We're fairly high handicappers, but enjoy the
views. I was hoping to get some information on the HHI Beach and Tennis Resort
from people who have stayed there. My husband, my 3 1/2 yr old daughter
and I are planning to rent there in June or July and would appreciate any
info on the children and adult activities they offer, as well as any
entertainment. Thank you in advance for your replies! :-) e-mail me at
CloudyDae@aol.com Thanks again! I want to know more about 3-28-98 home tour sponsered by the Society of
Design Administration. Is this private homes or new homes? I can't find a
phone number, etc. to find out more information. 4 of us ladies planning a
trip to your area during that time & need infomation now. We're renting a home with a pool on Shipyard Plantation in mid-May.
They told us the pool is not heated but that shouldn't be a problem in
May. Is that true? We want to be sure because the pool is our main reason
for renting this particular home and we will go elsewhere if they are not
being honest about this. Thanks! This a WARNING to everyone who rents watercraft, such as Jet-Skis: If
you are involved in an accident, you will probably be totally responsible
for any cost of repairs to the equipment, if there is an accident. Also,
we found that the company we rented from does not even offer any type of
insurance, as car rental companies do. However, they do have the renter
initial (rather quickly) a couple paragraphs in the rental agreement that
basically says that the renter assumes all risks during the time of the
rental. We found this out the hard (and costly) way. Hello! My friend and I are recent college graduates and would like to
live in Hilton Head this summer. We are looking for affordable
accomodations and jobs. COuld you please point us in the right direction?
Thank you for your time. Dana Eisenberg eisenbde@aol.com Please send me a package and price list of your hotels and motels and
of course the condos on the BEACH, thats what I really want. A
VACATION!!!! Last year I visited HHI and enjoyed a sailboat dolphin nature tour on a
boat called "Cheers". Can anyone give me their phone number? I am planning
a trip with my two sons and would like to go on the tour again. Thanks!!
Hello, We are taking our spring break at Hilton Head and staying at the
Marriot Harboure Point. We will be there in mid March. What is the weather
at that time? Also we would like to know about night life and activities
for college students that are under 21 yrs of age. Thank-you Mary and Crew
My husband and I are planning to a trip to Hilton Head Island Beach and
Tennis Resort with our 4 year old during the week of Memorial Day. Can
anyone offer specific suggestions regarding what "not to miss" and what we
may want to avoid? Also, if anyone has stayed at this property, I'd be
interested in their experience. We have the opportunity to extend our
stay, and are trying to decide if we want to extend at this property or
another. Please reply to stpierre@honcompany.com. Thanks! Hello! I lived in Hilton Head for the entire 1997 summer, on an
internship program for Resort Recreation & Tourism Management. All the
restaurants I have read about on here are awesome. Some of my faves were
Hinchey's, especially for Wed. night $1 bottles, Brew Pub pizza is
awesome, Wild Wing cafe luch buffet is the best ever, Big Apple Bagel has
great sandwiches. Anywhere you can eat Alaskan Snow Crab Legs...take
advantage of it! Seafood in Iowa just isn't the same. So, words of advice
for vacationers...RR&TM activities at the resorts are good, worth the few
bucks you pay for it, and your kids will have fun...ask the staffers to
babysit if mom and dad want a night out, cuz the interns make squat. DO
NOT take your children to RR&TM's Kid's Club. I headed that day camp all
summer. The kids run wild, basically just swimming all day, they get a
gross lunch, and it is so hot, with no access to air conditioning, that
your kids will probably get sun poisoning. There have been a few GREAT
kids there, though. Usually the vacationers... If you hit the WaterFun
Park at Comfort Inn, Navid (operations manager there) is awesome, tell him
HELLO for me! Krista Klockentager klockentager@wartburg.edu We are considering Hilton Head for the location of our wedding. Any
tips on really nice resturants, reception areas, or Catholic Churches?
Thanks!! I am planning a trip to Hilton Head in April 98. I am an avid scuba
diver and was wondering if there was scuba diving in the area, and even if
the water temperatures would be conducive to diving at that time of year.
I would appreciate any information that you could give me. Thank you.
Peter Herr SeaQ1@AOL.com Hi all! I have the chance (possibly, anyway) to visit HHI at the end of
March/beginning of April. However, I could only get away for a long
weekend (3, maybe 4 days) and it's a looooong drive (9 hours or so) to HHI
from my house. What I'd like to know from all you HHI "regulars" (or if
you've ever visited at this time of year) is would it be worth my while to
go for such a short time at this time of year? Are there enough things to
do (swimming is probably out unless I could find a heated pool?) in Hilton
Head at that time of year to make the trip worthwhile? I love walking on
the beach, etc, and I know it's fairly warm in March/April (at least
compared to home!). What do you think? All suggestions would be helpful!
TIA, Tracey tlovedittoe@yahoo.com Have stayed at Hilton Head 3 times in the last 8 years. Have always
rented a home in Sea Pines near Sea Pines Plantation Club. This year
looking at Turtle Lane Villas. Anyone had any experience staying there?
Also, looking for some USCA croquet courts on the Island. Husband is a
USCA member and would like to get in some play while on vacation in June
1998. We spent a week on Hilton Head and loved every minute of it. From the
people, the wildlife and the activities it was a wonderful time. We
certainly enjoyed the entertainment at the "Salty Dog", Dave Kemmerly is
the best entertainer we have ever heard. I've been going to Hilton Head every summer for the past 19 years. I am
now a junior at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I am planning on
spending either this summer or next summer living and working on Hilton
Head Island and would appreciate any advice on how to go about finding a
job and a cheap place to live. thank you. We spend a lot of time at HHI in an area called Port Royal Village
which is near the beach, the Westin Resort, and great golf and tennis. We
visit several times each year from Ohio and hope to move to the island
permanently in a few years. We think Port Royal is the best area, but
would be glad to answer questions about anyplace on the island. Most areas
are great. Email if you have specific questions. Sandy schaefer@wesnet.com
Our first visit to the "Beach" was Sept.'97 and what a place to
vacation. My wife went shopping and I golfed. Finest resturants that I've
ever had a sit down dinner. Where did I stay? A condo with an ocean view,
great oceanview balcony, kitchen with amenities, cable TV, and more. We
felt like we right at home. Be glad to make recommendations. Great place;
We are going back very soon. edparker@welchlink.welch.jhu.edu. --Sept.'97
Just came back from Christmas on Hilton Head, first time there. Stayed
at the Hyatt which has nice ocean front rooms @holiday rates ($69). Golf:
The golf courses (except in Seapines) are closed on Christmas but it seems
to be an annual tradition for everyone to go out and walk them on xmas.
It's lots of fun. Our family, which includes three pre-teenage girls has been going to
HHI for the past four years and are returning for a fifth that I left
under the couch. But seriously we have stayed at the Beach and Tennis
Resort and have had a great time each visit. Our favorite things to do
have included building sandcastles and hitting the waves. Our daughters
have mastered bodysurfing and are looking forward to dolphin riding. Our
favorite places to eat are Fuddruckers and Hilton Head Diner. We often eat
in to economize, making the "BILO" our favorite grocery stop. See you
there next August. Hi I am hoping if anyone has any experience staying at Shorewood, you'd
be kind enough to email me at Kapeman@aol.com, your experience staying
there. I'm particularly interested in knowing how clean and up to date the
facility is. Any other info that you think is relevant will be
appreciated. We are planning our trip for late Aug 98. i started going to hh in '94 in 3 yr time back 5 times. i do not golf
tennis or party. i do nature. nat'l geo does not have the dolphin
encounters hh offers. hours of video--feeding on shore, doing seaworld
tricks...not for hand-feeding or applause. hats off to islanders who
recognize the need to keep nature's bounty free and unspoiled. my desire
is to come to your bounty and spend the rest of my life trying to preserve
it and let it teach our youth to preserve and share! comments submitted
12/26/97 most recent visit 10/08/97 Hello.. we are contemplating a June trip to HH.. we have a wheelchair
bound person in our group... some beach areas have beach-buggies that the
disabled can be pushed on the beach in.. are these available in HH?
Thanks, Rick 11/8/97-11/14/97 My Wife and I had our 10th Anniversary vacation at the
Hilton Resort. The two places which really stand out are the Big Bamboo
where we had an outstanding evening, and W.G. Shuckers where they have a
great two for Tuesday dinner package. I'm looking for a list of spas, massage parlors, anything that would
have the "treat me right" attitude. I've only been able to find 2 off the
web and they are only open till 1 or 2 on Sat. I'm looking for something
open all day. I appreciate your help I've been to Hilton Head twice and stayed both times in the North
Forest Beach area. I love the entire island and want to return anytime
from September, 1998 forward. I am looking for a home or condo on or near
the beach that can accomodate two adults and two PERFECTLY behaved older
Golden Retrievers for up to one month. My last two vacations were
wonderful but I missed my 'kids'. They are getting a little older now and
have never seen the ocean. I am retired and spend all my time making sure
the pups are trained and well mannered. If anyone can direct me to a home
owner who is also a dog lover. . .please contact me at my e-mail address (katelyn@fairfieldi.com),
at (614) 569-7766 or at RR1 Box 125 Hide-A-Way Hills, OH 43107. Thanks and
I hope to visit soon!!! Judy McClelland Our family visited HH in July, 1996. In general our experience was a
good one. One restaurant that I feel that I need to mention is the
Quarterdeck Restaurant. The view at sunset was magnificant but the
restaurant was a totally different story. We were their for dinner. The
food was mediocre at best. The service was poor. Upon leaving we asked to
speak to the manager but were told the manager was too busy. Upon
returning home, I wrote two letters to the restaurant outlining our
experiences. The restaurant did not respond. For you non-smokers there was
an additional problem. The dining area is on two levels. The non-smoking
section is raised about two feet above the smoking level so all of the
smoke from the smoking section rises to the non-smoking section. Also, the
smoking level has the better view of the sound at sunset. I can recommend
the Crazy Crab and Aunt Chiladas. They provided good food and service at
reasonable prices. Greetings from the High Country: Thursday Nov 6th At the conclusion of
my trip to HHI this past Spring, I submitted several comments to your
Travelogue. Frankly, I was unprepared for the amount of interest and
inquiries I received from all over the country regarding restaurants,
golf, things to do and see, etc. Obviously, a lot of people read your Web
Page. Based upon the comments I have received and the thanks they have
sent for me trying to steer them in the right direction.... it has been a
valuable aid to helpiong them enjoy their vacations there. For your
information, my wife and I are planning to return again in the Spring of
'98 from mid April until around Memorial Day. We plan to explore all the
wonders there and upon my return I will submit an updated review of all of
the items I have previously commented on. In the meantime....ski season is
getting closer and I'm thinking SNOW !. All the Best....Gerry from Vail
I am a sophomore at Michigan State that will be living in Hilton Head
this summer. I am very interested in finding an internship or at least a
job that relates to my Marketing major. Any info. please e-mail me! Have
great day! :) best sunset dinners are bound to be the Sunset Grille at the end of
jenkins drive. small, quiet, out of the way(as in hard to find) upstairs
with 270 degree veiws of a small marina and truly inspiring veiws of
sunset over the intra coastal waterway. food was interesting and
excellent. very personable ,casual atmosphere. i guarantee you wont be
disappointed. A belated travelogue from our annual June trip to HHI. As always, it
was wonderful and as always, the home we rented in Palmetto Dunes was
perfect! Our large extended family(20!) has their favorite eateries but
you have to "experience" The Big Bamboo at Coligny Plaza....., just
remember to check your pulse after downing a War Dog!!!! Please enjoy the
visit and say "hey" when you see us cruising by- we'll be the ones smiling
from ear to ear! We took a dolphin cruise with Captain Zodiac Cruises. It was great! Our
captain, Jackie, was wonderful. She was very knowledgable about all of
wildlife in the area. The boat was a small one (18 feet), which let us get
really close to the action. At one time, the boat was completely
surrounded by dolphins. We had a great time and would definitely do it
again. My husband and I just returned from our stay on HHI (10/3-10/6/97). We
originally has reservations at the South Beach Marina Inn. We arrived
about 8 pm. The Inn had not left word with the welcome center at Sea Pines
so that we could get our passes. They were nice enough to give us a
temporary pass, but said we needed to have the Inn call us in so we could
get a pass good for our entire stay. When we arrived at the Inn, the
office was closed and they'd left our room keys in an envelope in the
mailbox outside their door. So much for having them call in our pass
tonight. We went up to our suite. It appeared acceptable at first glance.
Bathroom, kitchenette/living area downstairs. Sliding glass door w/harbor
view. Spiral staircase leading to bedroom and bath upstairs. We did a
quick walk-around. The first thing I noticed was that the bedspread looked
dirty. Then, upon opening the sliding glass door, the lock nearly fell
off. That didn't exactly boost our confidence. We came back inside, and
while trying to figure out how to reattach the lock, I saw the biggest
COCKROACH I have ever seen scurry across the kitchen counter and
disappear. The hubby didn't see it. We were pretty uncomfortable staying
there at that point. He attempted to call South Beach Marina Inn &
Rentals. No answer at either emergency number. In the meantime, I walked
into the bathroom only to be greeted by the second biggest cockroach I'd
ever seen--in the bath tub. At that point, there was no way I was sleeping
there. We'd barely been there 5 minutes, and had already seen 2 of these
things. Since we couldn't get a hold of anyone at SBMI we cancelled our
credit card payment and left. But we left them a note explaining what
happened, along with the second cockroach, which we captured, just in case
they wanted to argue the point. We got a very nice bug-free room at the
Holiday Inn Oceanfront, and enjoyed the rest of our stay immensely. My husband and I just returned from Hilton Head after spending a long
weekend (Oct 3-6 1997) on the island. We got in late, and opted to order
pizza since many of the restaurants stop serving at 10 pm. We chose Pizza
Chef Gourmet Pizza. It was really very good. The garlic-cheese bread was
wonderful, and the tomato-basil pizza was very good also. I had forgotten
my print out of Gerry from Vail's scoop on the restaurants, but I
remembered that he had absolutely raved about Truffles. We went there for
lunch on Sunday. Oooooh! It is sooooo good! I got the meatloaf sandwich
(trust me, leftovers never had it so good) which had a honey-mustard
glaze, and was topped with a roasted red pepper chutney. Excellent!
Without Gerry's list, I made a mistake. I remembered that he mentioned
Henry's specifically, but I couldn't remember if he said it was good or
bad. I guessed wrong. He was right. It was very mediocre, and the waitress
was extremely annoying. We also had dinner one night at The Old Oyster
Factory. The food was good (best key lime pie I had the entire trip) and
so was the service. Also, if you're into barbecue, as we are, and you go
to the mainland, try Duke's Barbecue in Beaufort. It's only open on
Saturday and Sunday. Good BBQ. We just returned from our Honeymoon on HH and it was incredible! We
stayed in an oceanfront condo in Palmetto Dunes and it was wonderful.
Palmetto Dunes is simply immaculate. We had many plans (jetski's,
parasailing, etc) but the weather was so hot and sunny that we just stayed
on the beach all day! I have many relatives in Southern California where
the big beaches are legendary - Huntington, Hermosa, Laguna - but they
have nothing on Hilton Head. The tide is unbelievable, and the hard packed
sand is awesome for bikes and everything else. We will definitely be back;
in fact we are already talking about looking into buying a condo! What can
I say, it was more beautiful than we ever expected and it was the perfect
choice for our Honeymoon. If you're looking for inland beauty and
oceanfront perfection - stay in Palmetto Dunes. The beaches were cleaned
every day, the bike paths through the golf courses are excellent, and the
entire plantation is kept up impeccably. Well, I guess that's it. We'll
definitely be going back next year, see you then! Most romantic restaurant/best food: LaMaisonette My wife and I just returned from an eight day vacation at Hilton Head.
This was our third visit to the Island. Although we're not golfers we
enjoy three activities, dining, jogging and relaxing on the beach; the
variety of restaurants and jogging trails are unsurpassed. Since we
enjoyed reading what your contributors had say about the island (while we
were driving) so I thought that I would reciprocate with a few comments
about the restaurants that we visited for dinner. We dined at the Big
Bamboo, La Paolo's, The Cafe at Wexford, Hoffbraus, Big Rocco's, Cafe
Europa, Rick's Place, The Cafe at Wexford (a second time). Our three
standouts are La Paolo's, Rick's Place and The Cafe at Wexford. La Paolo's
for its generous servings, great veranda dining and excellent Tira Misu;
Rick's Place for its delicious and different appetizers and entrees (the
most expensive of our dinners); The Cafe at Wexford for its atmosphere,
service, wine list and a peanut butter dessert that is incredible - the
Cafe has been our favorite since we first visited the island and I feel
that it is still is, although Rick's tied it this year. Bob K. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME INFORMATION ON THE RADISSON SUITES HOTEL IN HILTON
HEAD. PLANNING A FAMILY REUNION IN 1998. Just got home last night. We (2adults 3 kids under 12) had a ball. we
went on boat trip called The Holiday and loved the dolphins so much we
rented our own 16 ft. Skiff from the broad creek marina and really got up
close. we had great food we cant even pick out a favorite we went to Crazy
Crab, Crazy Nicks, Gieusippis, The Hofbrauhaus, and Abes Native Shrimp
House. Bike rentals are a must. We are going to try to come back next
summer! Somehow my message of Aug 4 was cut off and posted incompletely...we
are the first timers who fell in love with HHI and I listed the
restaurants and two golf courses...I was listed as anonymous, though I am
not!! :-) What got cut off from my post was that if any one would like to
email to ask questions, feel free...I am not an expert, but as a rookie
this summer, I feel I might be able to help other "rookies"!! Lu B. -
Pemby475@aol.com Just returned from our 12th annual pilgrimage to HHI. As usual a great
time. I haven't seen anyone plug Hilton Head Ice Cream as a great place to
eat. After dinner EVERY night, we would pack the kids in the car and head
off to Orleans Road and some of the best ice cream in the east. Written
8/27/1997 Just returned from HHI, (8/17- 8/24); stayed at Shipyards Carolina Club
in 3-br condo. Super facilities. Boat trip to Savannah fun, especially
trolley ride, but grab a drink and use facilities before boarding trolley!
Gastronomic low point of trip: Big Rocco's Italian (?) Restaurant. Didn't
think anyone could screw up spaghetti. They did. Very forgettable place,
hot, noisy, mediocre service and mostly inferior food. However, the
HOFBRAUHAUS on Pope Avenue - WUNDERBAR! Excellent food (try the
Schweinebraten), delightful German music by Bob, neat atmosphere and
really nice people. Another superior meal at Nantucket Seafood House on
New Orleans Road. Owner Jim Laferriere and waitress Kerry were most
accommodating. Hilton Head Diner quite good, but so busy. Our first time
at HHI, but we want to go back. Pat and Ellen Wright of Detroit area. My fiance and I will be married on Hilton Head in January 1998. There
will be 15 additional attendees. We need to locate a photographer,
florist, beach location and minister (neither of us are overly religious
but we are hoping for an Episcopalian, Unitarian or Quaker minister).
We'll have a larger reception when we return home to Maryland. Any ideas
for the Hilton Head portion? We will be staying in Sea Pines. THANKS! Do you have a map of South Carolina w/ Hilton Head on it if so please
can you send it to me, write me back please no matter what! Following my trip to Hilton Head where we spent half of April and most
of May this year...I sumitted a number of suggestions to the Travelogue
regarding restaurants, etc. These were in the May and June and maybe even
the July 1997 Travelogue. I also invited interested parties to contact me
via E-Mail if they had specific requests for information and frankly have
been overwhelmed by the number of nice folks who have taken me up on my
offer. So far I have answered all of them, but if I can put another note
in the Travelogue regarding GOLF....maybe it would help. So..here's the
straight scoop on Golf at HHI. There are a number of great courses on or
near the island. Prices can be high, but there are deals to be obtained.
The famous HARBOURTOWN is great...but very expensive and frankly there are
a number of other super courses on and near the island that would be as
much fun to play unless money is no object and you simply must play
Harbourtown. If you type in Hilton Head Golf...in a search engine....you
should be able to get a listing with phone numbers of all the courses in
the area. Also...once you are there....there is a free booklet available
at super markets...shopping malls, hotels etc. called Hilton Head Golf
which lists all the courses as well. I thought the other two Sea Pines
courses...the Ocean and Marsh were good. All three nines at Shipyard
Plantation were fun as were the Fazio course and the Hills course at
Palmetto Dunes. The Robert Trent Jones course was very "municipal" and not
worth it as far as I was concerned. The courses at Palmetto Hall were good
and the 3! courses at Port Royal were fine except they were very tight and
a little short. The Indigo Run course is super. Just off the island...the
Old South and Old Carolina and the Gary Player course...Hilton Head
National are real good courses. The Fuzzy Zoeller course...Island West is
good...but a long drive. The Rose Hill Plantation course is very nice and
not far off the island and I hear they have a 3 day package which is a
very good deal...Call them and ask about it. In short...golf is abbundant
at HHI, but can be expensive unless you get a good deal and I've tried to
tell you how. If you want to pay full retail....I guess you are either
very rich...or very foolish. All the Best.....Gerry from Vail Just came back from Hilton Head Island (8/2/97 - 8/8/97). My first time
there. We stayed in Palmetto Dunes Resort in a great condo right on the
beach. The facilities were beautiful. The tennis and golf were abundant.
For people who like to shop, the outlet stores were everywhere. We took a
day trip to Charleston and to Savannah. Both cities had alot of history
with the civil war and the old restored homes and the large historic
districts. Would definitely recommend Savannah. Should read the book
"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" because it is a non-fiction book
about old Savannah. It refers to actual houses and gardens etc that you
can see on a tour. Restaurants that we went to were as follows : Old
Oyster Factory - Great and saw Mark Messier- hockey player Wild Wings Cafe
- a little loud but wonderful wings Brick Oven Pizza - Excellent for a
light meal Little Venice - not good South Seaport (at Sea Pines) - great
view and good food Will probably go back again --- Can't wait. Be sure to
walk around Harbor Town and Sea Pines Plantation. We also took a dolphin
cruise and the dolphins came right up to the boat. They did something
really crazy, they so "strand feeding" in the marshes, they force little
fishes to the edge of the marsh and "corral" them to land and eat them. It
sounds bad but it was very interesting and it is rare for us to see but we
did see it happen (during low tide). My mother and I just returned from Hilton Head and we loved it. It's
really a beautiful island! We stayed at the Hilton Resort in Palmetto
Dunes. I would highly recommend anyone to stay there. Palmetto Dunes,
Harbourtown, and Sea Pines are all great sections of the island to visit.
Definitely walk up to the top of the Harbourtown lighthouse. The view is
spectacular! I heard that the restaurant Crazy Crab in Harbourtown is
great, but we never had a chance to go. South Beach is a beautiful section
of the island that resembles a New England Village. It looks just like
Nantucket, MA! We went to a great restaurant in Coligny Circle called Only
Pasta. It was scrumptious! Definitely try this place! The prices are very
reasonable.Coligny Cirle is also a great place to go shopping and ride
bikes. We also heard that the restaurant Fitzgerald's was fabulous. It's
right on the ocean and was recommended by an owner of one of the condos on
the island. My mom and I adored Hilton Head Island and we're planning on
returning as soon as we can! -JT Please send me information on contacting Gregg... Thanks... Bo Prosser
We will be visiting Hilton Head for the first time the second week of
Sept. If anyone has any suggestions or comments on golf, good restaurants
(also what to avoid), beaches, Palmetto Dunes,shopping-just anything of
interest would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, doreen.pruitt@prepress.pps.com
Just returned on August 4 from our first-ever (definitely not last!)
HHI trip. A few thoughts and musings...we stayed at the Adventure Inn in
an updated unit at the Ocean Dunes Villas (always, always ask for
UPDATED). This is an older complex on S Forest Beach and really isn't very
service-oriented and grounds aren't too well kept. The garbage is placed
in an area near the parking lot and entrance to villas that leaves a lot
to be desired. The price is reasonable and it is right on the ocean, so
since we're not in our rooms that much, it was fine. But we have already
reserved the Disney Resort for next year. They will rent out only for
about the next year or so till all the time-shares are sold. Restaurants:
We ate out every night (family of 4 with two teenagers). CRAZY CRAB: A
good first night intro to Sea Pines and Harbour Town, but expensive.
Probably wouldn't rush back, tho the fish was good. BIG BAMBOO CAFE: A
real find. Great WW II Pacific atmosphere, excellent fish, the best ribs
ever. Nice staff, friendly. HILTON HEAD BREWING CO.: Fun, good food, great
place for our large group of friends. Great brews. SALTY DOG: Great fun,
good food, you have to buy a T-shirt! J J PEPPERONIO'S: At the Hyatt in
Palmetto Dunes. On the ocean. Great view, even during a thunderous
lightening storm. Pizza good and some interesting choices. AUNT CHILADA'S:
Good Mexican and and fun atmosphere. A do-again. BIG ROCCO'S: Another real
find. Excellent Italian, great fish in a big% For the past 9 years, we have made the annual trek from Chicago to HHI.
We first came based on a friend's recommendation and fell in love with the
island since. We have stayed at the Beach and Tennis Resort on Foley Rd.
in a 2-BR condo. Very reasonably priced. Over that time, we have been to
numerous restaurants and attractions. The Old Oyster Factory is a favorite
and well as visiting the dolphins with Commandor Zodiac out of South
Beach. Great Fun. Looking to return again and again. You can reach me at
boblo@interaccess.com. 08/03/97. We are planning a trip to HHI for the weekend of the 7,8,9,10th of
August. We've never been to HHI and would like to know some of the nice
places to stay. Also what is there to do at HHI. Please reply, look
forward to going! I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the Marriot Harbor club.
Is there a beach? or is it nearby? How are the accommodations in the
Marriot. Do I get access to all the other Marriott places? HOw is the
weather from in middle March? Thanks !!!! -Ken We just returned from Hilton Head Island after spending four days there
with my teenage son & husband. The island is very beautiful, but if you're
a Northerner like us, you will find it too humid. If you can adapt, you
should have a great time. our family owns two time shares at HH....one at heritage and the other
at Monarch. We have been coming for the last 10 years.... We have made
wonderful friends that we always share many good times ....... In two days
we leave for this lovely South Carolina island once again.. I have already
called our "HH cronies" and everyone is coming.. The magic
awaits!!!!!!!!July24,1997 What is the current schedule? How obtrusive or annoying is the process?
Should we defer vacation plans? Please respond. We visited HHI last year for a week from the last week in December. We
rented a condo in Palmetto Dunes and had the most enjoyable, and restful
stay. Saw several deer too! Oh yes, and the President and First Lady. We
discovered the HH Diner. Interesting place and wide menu selection. Waiter
had our drinks ready on our second visit. What great service! Restaurant
near the lighthouse was great too for seafood. Some restaurants closed
during the holidays. Making reservations for the same time this year.
Can't wait My family and I have been visiting Hilton Head for several years now.
We usually stay in Shipyard Plantation.... it is nice and quiet, but close
to everything. Some restuarants we enjoy are: Scott's Fish Market, The Old
Oyster Factory, Kingfisher, Truffles and Salty Dog. There is a lot to do
on the island, but if you are in search of the ultimate relaxing vacation
this is the place.... it is beautiful. Please send info about Hilton Head. We are planning a vacation in Nov.
We are interested in where to stay, what to do, golf, sightseeing, where
to eat, etc. Thank you Anyone needing a sales rep. and a phone switchboard operator, please
send information to me. We have relatives in Hilton Head and would love to
live there. I just returned from my first trip to HHI ever! I do have to say that
it was the most beautiful place that I have ever seen! I was invited to go
by a friend, for a wedding that was held at the Westin Port Royal Harbour
over this past fourth of July weekend. We flew from Denver to Atlanta, and
made the trek to HHI from there. My travelling companion grew up in that
area, and thought that since I had never seen the south, that it would be
a great drive. It was an approximate 4.5 hour drive from Atlanta airport,
but very beautiful. We stayed on HHI at "The Spa" condominiums, just off
of W.M Hilton parkway and Beach City Road. The condominium was a 2 bdr, 2
bath, and overlooked the pool. It was within a 3-5 minute walking distance
from the beach. The beach was a little muddy, probably due to the fact
that it was not a fully developed beach, but all the same, coming from
seeing the mountains all of my life, the ocean was very beautiful. I would
highly reccommend these condominiums, they are very clean. Any advice for first time visitors with two teenagers (ages 15 & 16) we
are happily looking forward to any input! Also on our way back home we
plan to spend one day in Charleston, staying at the Best Western King
Charles Inn. How much can we enjoyably pack into one day...we love history
and architecture and would like to visit Ft Sumter if it is feasible. Any
suggested highlights for HHI and Charleston appreciated. Please email us
with any advice, I don't often get to read this terrific travelogue.
Leaving in two weeks. Thanks. June 7-14/97. Once again had a grand time on the Island. Took the
advice of some of your Travelogue readers & tried out a few restaurants.
The sandwiches at Philly's are indeed a great find. Tried both locations.
Preferred New Orleans Rd atmosphere-but excellent food at either. Also
tried OLD FORT PUB. Saved it till our last nite, and wish we had gone
earlier in the week, so we could have spent many more outings there.
Beautiful sunset, absolutely superb service, and terrific food. It didn't
seem to matter whether customers were ordering from the pub menu,
(munchies & lighter fare) or the full dinner menu, the staff were
attentive, super friendly and very accomodating to every request.
Frequented by many locals,(a good sign) with many many Chicago Bulls fans
peeking in at the TV in the bar. (may have something to do with the fact
that Michael & family have a home in Wexford!) We had the best time there,
and after a dozen or more visits to HH in the last 6 summers , it is now
our fav for that type of dining. However, we still will frequent the Wild
Wing a tradition we have created since our very first visit!! Does anyone
have any info on the Players Club Resort/Inn?? Can't seem to find much.
Friends have a stay/play golf pkg. they are interested in using, but would
like to know something about the place first. We just couldn't offer much
in that regard. Appreciate any response, positive or otherwise. Hoping to
get back in late August, for another week, until then looking forward to
checking out Travelogue updates. Thanks. Dawna, Rick, Rose & Dick
St.Catharines, Ontario Canada. We have been going to HHI for the past ten years and love to stay on
South Forest Beach on an oceanfront villa. This spring we stayed at
SeaSide Villas directly on the Ocean. If you go, request the one on the
first floor with the great wooden rocking chairs!! Our most enjoyable
moments were sipping coffee in the morning while rocking on the chairs and
watching the sun come up!! We love the beach for bike riding - it's great
for small kids since the sand is hard-packed and you can always stop to
explore the starfish or jellyfish that wash up on shore. Even better is
biking along side the dolphins as they feed offshore. We love to eat at
Aunt Chiladas - just a short walk from the SeaSide Villas (#123). They
have a great happy hour and we love to play the trivia game!! Looking
forward to our visit next year. We are going to Hilton Head for the first time for our honeymoon (3rd
week in September) and I would like to get some feedback from HH visitors.
We are staying in a condo - Captain's Walk in Palmetto Dunes - does anyone
have any experiences, good or bad, at these condos? Also, we are an active
and athletic couple, are there good bike trails on the island (besides the
beach)? I have a lot of good ideas for dinner and nightlife from the
messages I've read here in the Travelogue, and Savannah sounds wonderful,
so thanks for the opportunity to get "real people" experiences and I would
appreciate any ideas. Brock in Michigan brock@mcsl.com We have been going to Hilton Head with friends off and on since 1982.
We absolutely love it. We have stayed in many different houses and villas
on Sea Pines and Shipyard. Our friends have stayed oceanfront on south
Forest Beach, but that is a little too busy for our tastes. My
sister-in-law now owns a house at Inland Harbour on Sea Pines, and that is
a convenient location. We just returned today from a week there, but were
also there at Christmas for the first time this year. It was great at
Christmas, with great weather. We don't eat out all the time, but went to
Nantucket Seafood House for the first time this year. Probably the best
food we've ever had on the island. I don't know exactly what others
consider reasonably priced, but we felt it was a bit high. We had 2 buy
one get one free coupons and it was $62 for 4 people. You probably pay a
little more for oceanfront there than places like Myrtle Beach, but if you
don't mind walking a little ways or driving to the beach there are some
good prices. We liked staying at Colonnade Club and Waterford, but would
recommend Villa Rentals over some of the agencies we have rented through.
We have also rented through owners with good luck. Hello all,My wife and I are planning a FIRST trip to Hilton Head during
mid-July. I amleaning towards the Radisson but not sure what it is like or
if someone could make a recomendation of place to stay. I know the Disney
is booked but was also wondering what it is like. Any info. is appreciated
THANKS! I will be driving to HH from Boston in late July. Would like some info
regaurding which area I should check out. We are considering relocating to
the area. Maybe some locals could e-mail me the scoop on good family
communities I should see? I certainly apperciate any help. My family and I just returned from our HH vacation. Let me just say
that the island is absolutely incredible! I am already planning my return
trip, although I have a feeling that I won't be able to go back for
awhile. My husband, 7 year old and I just returned from HH on June 20, 1997. It
was 841 miles from Bowling Green, Ohio and took us 14.5 hours to drive
straight through. My family and I have been visiting Hilton Head for over 20 years, and
currently spend 8-10 weeks a year there. If you have any questions about
dining, shopping, activities, events, or sports, especially tennis, e-mail
me. I will be glad to give you advice, opinions, and/or suggestions about
what to do, where to eat, where to stay, and of course, what not to do.
Feel free to drop me a line. We visited HHI again this year (6/07/97 to 6/14/97) and had a bodacious
time. The beaches are so very wide at low tide and bicycling is a must
here. We especially enjoyed the restaurants Great Plains Cattle Company
and Crabby Nick's (used to be Shoney's). We rented our great beach
cruisers from Sand Cats (785-3210). I included the phone number because
they dont seem to be to well advertized. We have a time share at HHI but
dont even want to exchange. Just wish HHI would halt new construction of
condos though it is becoming to to metopolized or perhaps has been for a
while. Beyond that though HHI is a terrific place to vacate to. I enjoy
the tennis here immensely. Golf is very prominent too but not my game.
Check out Harbour Fest at Shelter Cove Harbour for music, eats, and
fireworks on Tuesday night or perhaps Thursdays, better check first for
exact days. You gotta come here and just have fun! Do you have recommendations for scuba spots/shops on the island? Thank
you!!! Veronica White RE: Golf Equipment: I visited a golf store by the name of Island Golf
Shop in Orleans Plaza (by Makato Restaurant). Was looking for a "Bubble
Burner" or "Big Bertha" club. The salesman persuaded me to purchase one of
their own clubs --a knock-off--and can it ever "knock" the ball. And best
of all, the price was less than $70.00!! With the money I had left over, I
took my wife out for dinner the rest of the week.... Art Nor, Frankfort,
IN, June, 1997 Gerry from Vail's...MISC HILTON HEAD INFO. If my coments on restaurants
made you want to eat out every night while you are there....Great...but in
the event you want to cook in I have a couple of suggestions. First, most
of the supermarkets like Harris Teeters, Publix, etc. there have deli
depts. and you can pick up a a great selection of items at a reasonable
price. Being from a place hight in the Rockies...I was looking for seafood
and found a real gem in BARNACLE BILL's. He's located on the main road
(Rte 278) between Shelter Cove and Folly Beach Rd. just before Port Royal
and is right next door to the outdoor Speedway Gas Station with the lowest
gas prices on the island. His fresh seafood is phenominal and his prices
are lower than the supermarkets. He has
shrimp...Tuna...swordfish...crabs...and about every other kind of fresh
fish you can think of. He gets in different stuff all the time. Tell him I
sent you and he will take care of you. Suggestion.....if it rains and you
are bummed out because you can't go to the beach there are some other
things to do that are fun. They have a number of outlet Malls in the area
if you are into shopping. Drive down to Savannah.....it is a beautiful old
southern town that oozes charm. I would suggest taking one of the
motorized trolley tours. They leave every 30 minutes from the Visitor's
Center on MLK Blvd. on the W. side of town. Go down to River Street. There
are a lot of real tourist traps there, but I found the SHRIMP FACTORY to
be a very nice place to eat. The Pirates House is a classic tourist trap.
Another place to consider is BEAUFORT, SC. IT is another historic old
coastal city and several movies like Prince of Tides, The Big Chill, The
Great Santini...were filmed there. A Final note....They will be "Renourishing"
the beach at HHI this summer and they began in May up near Pt. Royal and
will be moving along towards Sea Pines and pumping sand back onto the
beach this summer. If they happen to be working where you are
staying....don't despair, just jump in your car and go to another place.
There are a number of public beaches on the island and the sea and sand
are the same....right. Well that's it for now. All the Best, Gerry from
Vail Gerry from Vail's reccomended RESTAURANTS: Gerry from Vail's scoop on HHI RESTAURANTS: Not surprisingly for a
tourist place, there are a ton of them. They range from fast food places
like Wendy's and McDonalds to semi fast food places like Shoneys and "move
'em in ...feed 'em up...move 'em out places like the Cracker
Barrel......to a number of privately owned places . There some really bad
places with lousy food, too high prices considering,, poor atmosphere etc.
to some really good ones that offer good food, fair prices considering and
lovely atmosphere. You don't always pay for what you get....Some of the
lousy ones charge higher prices and some of the best are reasonable. In my
GENERAL ADVICE....I suggested picking up a copy of HHI RESTAURANTS....do
it!!! It will give you a sampling of most of the restaurants on the island
with their menus and prices. Not to be Negative, but there are some places
you might want to be warned about in advance. If you decide to disregard
this advice....NO WHINING ! Recently, I sent in a note to the Hilton Head Island Travelogue
following our return from an extended stay in April and May of 1997. (You
can read it in the travelogue) Foolishly, I suppose I offered to give
advice on the best RESTAURANTS...GOLF deals...and other items of interest
on the island...but I wan't prepared for the onslaught of requests from
all over the USA from a lot of nice folks. While I have tried to answer
each request, it has become an awesome task so I will try to sumarize my
opinions, advise and counsel at this time. While I realize it maty not be
for everyone, I hope you will accept it as the "Straight Scoop" from a guy
with on financial interests in answering your questions. If this doesn't
work...then you can reach me at my E-mail address and I will try to help
you. Thanks for your understanding... GERRY from VAIL. OUR FIRST TIME THERE COMING IN SEPTEMBER 1997! Can anyone help of where
to go and wher to stay along the beach, no too overly priced. Thanks is there any thing to do besides golf are there theme parks ect i need
information about it i need to make plans form my familie if u can help
e-mail me thanks , crystal 6/11/97 We'll being staying at Sea Pines during the 3rd week in June.
Are there places to fly fish? (either fresh or salt water) Can you
recommend any sea kayaking tours? Thanks. We go to MB every summer, and have always stayed at the Days Inn
Oceanfront on 77th Avenue. I want to stay somewhere new; even if it is
more expensive. More luxurious, but still being ocean front and
comfortable. Any ideas? Looking for info on the Daufuskie Island cruise. Can you help? Thank
You! Wendy Coffin I need help. Please! Our original plans fell through. We are looking
for a ocean front (or close to the ocean), 2 or 3 bdr, villa. Full
kitchen, linens. We have heard only great comments about HH and want to
see for our selves. My oldest boy wants to enjoy the waves. Our vacation
must be 7/18 or 19 through the 25th. We must be back in Buffalo for the
26th. Do you know of any such place that is available on such short
notice? Thanks so much for your time. Mike - Buffalo, NY My "new" husband and I just returned to Denver, CO from HHI. We were
married last week, May 29, outside at the Marriott Grande Ocean Resort,
and everything was simply perfect. We would highly recommend eating at the
Great Plains Cattle Company - which is where we held our reception dinner.
Very reasonably prices, extra large portions, excellent service, and the
food was delicious. Everyone who attended the reception dinner was eager
to go back again. Anyone visiting HHI whether for the 1st time or repeat
visitors - you can't go wrong with a vacation here - it is wonderful! My wife and I spent our twentieth anniversary (May 16-18, 1997)at
Palmetto Dunes Hilton Resort. We usually vacation in Jamaica but decided
to give Hilton Head a try because we've heard wonderful remarks about the
beach. We were not dissapointed. We have been to some world class beaches
but Hilton Head's beach takes the cake for cleanliness and accomodations.
Most impressive was the hard packed sand, not to mention the incredible
width of the beach, especially at low tide, Wow! As much as we enjoyed the
island, we were very dissapointed with the Hilton Resort. Our
reservations, made three months in advance, were not available upon check
in. The "ocean view" that we paid extra for was a thin strip of water
visible across the parking lot. The staff was indifferent to our concerns.
The pool was closed on Saturday to accomodate a private party, and the
pool cleaners fired up thier engines early in the morning making it
impossible to sleep in. The room was large and in very close proximity to
the beach. Our dining experiences were good with the exception of The Old
Oyster Factory. I've never had a pushier waitress!I was not permitted even
one refill on my tea, in fact the waitress poured water into my emptied
glass. yuck! The food was good but not exceptional. All in all, I felt
like "just another tourist." I do recommend Miguel's on the harbor-it was
excellent! We look forward to returning to Hilton Head, for jogging,
walking and biking on the beach, it can't be beat! Note to T.L. Dittoe. I could tell you all about the beach replenishment
program taking place on Hilton Head but you did not supply an Email
address in your comments on the Travelogue. If you read this, Email me at
ANad52@aol.com Submitted 5/31/97 Just returned on May 23rd to Vail, CO where I live after being at HHI
for half of April and most of May, 1997. We rented a lovely 3 BR - 3 1/2 B
house right on the golfcourse in one of the plantations there and really
enjoyed the area. We ate out about 4 nights a week and a variety of
restaurants and discovered some really good ones...some tourist rip off
ones...and some that were just plain medicore. We cooked in about 3 nights
a week since our place had a super outdoor grill and got some great FRESH
seafood while we were there. We discovered a place called BARNACLE BILL's...which
sells FRESH seafood and Bill's fish...shrimp..crabs...etc. was clearly the
best on the island. There are some other places that sell seafood...but
beware...some of it is frozen and not fresh and Bills prices are great and
the fish is fabulous. He is located right on the main road (Hwy 278 -
Hilton Pkwy) right next door to the Speedway gas station whicvh has the
lowest price's on gas on the island. It is towards the bridge from
Palmetto Dunes and Shelter Cove and on the Shelter Cove side of the road
before you get to Folly field road. Tell Bill that GERRY from Colorado
sent you and I'll bet he treats you right. If anyone is interested in the
best restaurants and the ones to avoid...send me an E-Mail message and
I'll get back to you. Looking at some of the comments posted here....some
must be posted by people who are either kids or else they don't have a
clue about what is good dining. Ex....Fuddruckers... come on...no my idea
of gourmet food. If you send a message...let me know how old you are and
the kind of food and atmosphere/prices you like.. so I'll have an idea
what to suggest. All in all...HHI has something for everyone and is a
great place to visit. P.S. I call give you some tips on how to get the
best prices on greens fees and where to play if you are a golfer. All the
Best... Gerry Z. gazman@colorado.net I am planning a mid-June 1997 visit to Hilton Head/Palmetto Dunes. I
have heard that sometime during the summer this year, something will be
happening to the beach/ocean, something about rebuilding the beach using
machines in the ocean? If anyone knows anything about this, an/or the
effect that this might have on the beach while I am there, please let me
know. THanks to all who have contributed to this travelogue, your comments
have been so helpful as my family plans our vacation!! We will be visiting HH for the first time in July 97. Can anyone
suggest places to eat or things to do for 6 people, ages 7 through 72?
Would like places to eat that provide some type of entertainment and/or
atmosphere for casual attire. Can anyone provide information on the dinner
cruises? We need to keep the young as well as the old entertained. Hi! I vacation at HH for last 12 yrs. I remembered seeing the tidal
info somewhere at this site last year. Been searching everywhere but cant
find it. I will be arriving this year around the 6th of June. We plan our
week in advance and would like to always be at the beach at low tide.
Thanks...You probably know that we really love Hilton Head. Twelve years
running...Thanks! Please put a tide schedule back on your site or tell me
where it is...I cant find it?? We just returned from a fabulous week in Hilton Head Island. We have
gone there over the past five years and had always stayed in a hotel
(Crystal Sands) but this year because we were traveling with five of us,
we decided to rent instead. A perfect choice. The weather the Week of May
2-11, was in the low 80's, the sun and the blue skies over the lagoons and
ocean was incredible. We tried new restaurants, Quarterdeck in Sea Pines
(great for sandwiches and light dining, overlooking the yatchs and water);
Hudson's, (okay if you like seafood); the HH Diner for breakfast is great;
Guiseppes for pizza, fab; we went mini golfing; my husband and son golfed;
drive to Savannah for the day (only 45 minutes) - history and culture of
the south - walk River Street; visit Shelter Cove at night, for live
entertainment from 7.30p.m.Tues.-Sat. If you like steak and ribs we would
recommend Damons, (Wexford), a magician comes to the table to entertain
you. Great place to go every year, can't wait to return. after visiting hh for my first time in the summer of 1996, i was in
love!! hilton head truly has it all!! sun, surf, friendly people and
awesome sights! in my opinion: a must see: gregg russel (excellent family
time) good food: crabby nick's (casual dining) must do: definitely watch
the sunrise and sunset!! it is gorgeous!! i will be returning to hh upon
my graduation in 1998!! i love it!! hilton head is #1 with me!! We are planning to camp at or around Hilton Head this summer. Can you
supply any info on camping sites? Have been reading through your travelogues and picking up some great
tips. I'd really like as much information as possible about activities for
kids (10,7,3). We'll be visiting the Island late June. Also any
information about the Gregg Russell programs for kids would be greatly
appreciated. I've been calling for the past two months and leaving
messages but haven't gotten a response. Thanks, Tracy (tnewman961@aol) I am contacting you for reservation information at a villa/condo during
the 4th of July weekend there in Hilton Head. Most places rent for a week
and I am specifically interested in the dates, 7/3-6/97, Thursday through
Sunday only! If you know of any specials or home owners that would like to
rent their home for those dates, please feel free to give me a call at
home in the evening at 404/223-1118 or email me here at zclemmons@gbconsulting.com
Thank you for your assistance. Zinethia L. Clemmons Dear Hilton Head Island representative, I'm interested in information
regarding resorts/camps with tennis instruction during the months of July
and August. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in
advance, Anne Pawlowski, 218-9099 Riverside Dr. Em Windsor, Ontario N8S
4P9 We will be staying at the Radisson Suites when we come to HHI this May.
Does anyone have any information about it? Also, since this will be our
first time to the island, any information about interesting things to do
and see would be a big help. We will be staying at Sea Pines May 24-31. We would like to know what
the ocean and pool temperature will most likely be. Likewise, do the
evenings get cool at that time of year? What is the going rate for jetski
rental? Besides Greg Russell, what do you recommend for children ages 1
and 1 1/2. Thanks! My family consisting of two children and two adults intend to visit
beautiful HHI for the first time in mid-June. A service is promoting a
stay at the Island Club for a week at $845 for a two-bedroom on the Lagoon
side, $999 for Ocean View, and $1195 for Ocean Front. This seems
attractive but I am interested in your opinion of this resort. I'd
appreciate any comments. Good deal? Nice place to stay? I wouldn't stay
there if they gave it away? Great place for a family (or not so)? Thank
you. Help. My wife and I want to take a 2 day trip to Hilton Head in
mid-May. Can you recommend the nicest hotels. We do not want to stay in a
villa. We are looking just to have a restful 2 days. Any recommendations?
Scott@biztool.com We (family of 5) are planning to visit HHI the week of 6/29/97 and are
planning to stay at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort, or the
Fiddler's Cove, or something equivalent. We are looking for private Condo
owners that might be interested in renting their units for this week.
Enjoyed reading the Travelogue. Thanks. . Lots of great restaurants on Hilton Head Island. Finally retired here
and are now full time residents. For a lunch-time treat, try Phillys Cafe
& Deli - 2 locations, one in Fountain Center on New Orleans Road, and the
other in the Pineland Mill Mall. They say they serve "The Best Sandwiches
on the Island... Period! ----- they are right. Great price for a really
over-sized sandwich. Try one of many Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches
offerings. Discovered this place in mid-June of 1996 and have returned
many times and ordered something different each time. Fast and courteous
service. Say "hi" to owner Mike for me. Had an interesting experience at the Old Fort Pub in Hilton Head
Plantation. We had 9:00 PM reservations and were seated on time. The food
was excellent and unique. We enjoyed the dinner but soon had a series of
problems with the waitress. Throughout the dinner she was nowhere to be
found and table service sufferred. Following dinner she presented us with
the check prior to serving coffee ( it was getting late and it appears the
staff was anxious to depart). During coffee, we paid the bill and gave her
a 10% tip because of the lack of quality service. She soon returned and
asked for additional money claiming that the house tip is 17% minimum. Planning on a mid-September wedding with 25-30 guests. Does anyone know
of an intimate, charming place to hold the nuptials and reception. We have gone to HHI for the past three years exclusivelt for vacation
at least three times each year. We love the beach , the laidback
atmosphere and the great selection of fine dining. You must try La
Massionette and Juleps the food is excellent and the service superb. We visited Hilton Head in March 1997. Too bad we were there when the
tennis tournement was there. It was way too crowded for our tastes. I have
looked forward to visiting there for sooo long. I was dissappointed in the
development of that tiny island. Back to back condo's is sure a bummer. We
would never return. I can see where it used to be nice. We had a great
dinner at Fitzgerald's. Swordfish was out of this world! We are originally
from San Francisco, so know good food! Also enjoyed the fun ambiance of
the Bamboo Cafe! My father in law had a ball looking at all the WW2 stuff!
Menu had something for us all! Tough to find the place tho. Played golf
mostly. Always look forward to eating at the Imperial Dragon Chinese restaurant
in Park Plaza. Plan to try everything on the menu but it may take a while
since it's 12 pages long. Great atmosphere and superb authentic food.
Helen the owner is a gorgeous Chinese lady and for a while I imagine I am
back in Asia. I understand she has a new Imperial Dragon in Bluffton and I
can hardly wait. Now I can get my Chinese food fix before I have to fight
I-95 on the way home. 4/23 97 We are thinking about staying at the Villamare for our second trip to
HHI(2 adults, 2 children). Does anyone have any info about this resort,
positive or negative? Hi We will be on the island the middle of May staying in a timeshare is
there any discount packages or specials for golf during that time of year.
Thanks Bob McLaughlin I am a college student majoring in Recreation & Leisure management. For
my resort manage ment class I have to do a project on a resort. The state
I have to do it on is South Carolina. i have chosen to do it on Palmetto
Dunes resort. what I need to know exactlly what kind of effect or what's
it place on hilton head Island. I keep reading about all these places and
activites beginging held on this Island that I am getting confused. If
someone can make things clear for me it would be great. Another question I
have is what is this Disney thing on the Island that I am reading about.
Is that sepporet or part of it, or one of Dunes competters? This is were I
am getting confused. If someone who knows that erea can get back to me it
would be great. I spent last summer in Hilton Head. I worked at MOSS CREEK It's a great
place that any one would want to retire to. I also worked at the
Timberland factory store. If you need a new par of shoes thats the place
to go. Jane Hays is the manager. Very nice women if you go by tell her Tom
said Hi. The EDDIE BOWER outlet is another can't miss Debbie Martin the
manager is very friendly and will always make you smile. If you see her
tell her i said hi also. If your looking for something to do during the
day. The TIKI HUT is your best bet. The Pina coladas are great, and the
live music keeps you in a good mood. Shelter Cove is a great place to
visit also. My family and Our best friends are going to hhi in July. Where is the
best place to get a condo that will sleep 7 and the best view? We have
never been there. Can we see great sun sets? Where are the best places to
eat. Thanks Kenny will be going to disney resort on the island..would like to hear from
someone who can give me an insight as to what to expect...kids 8 and 4
.....we have been going to HILTON HEAD for 4 yrs...and love it...looking
to try the disney resort..any information you can share would be
helpful.....lp you can give us would be helpful...we appreciate My wife and I will be in HH and have never been before. We have the
option of staying at Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort or Player's Club
Resort. Would like any comments on either place from anyone that's been
there. thks. Hello. I spent a week at Sea Pines Plantation HHI last June. I loved
the place! The beaches was breathtaking, and I just fell in love with the
people there. I'm from Norway and was there with my host family. I've been
back in Norway for almost a year, and I rally miss the place. If any
trilliarders or someone want to pay my trip over, I'll be there in a
second! I'm studying to be a teacher in college, and knows how to take
care of kids... I wish I was back at the salty dog.. Say hi to Chuck and
Eileen Evans and to Jim and Marilyn Gorman! You'll meet them at the Dog..
Have a nice time there! Love, Gunn Mirja. Hello! We would like information about the Disney Resort. Where is it
located exactly? Is it in Palmatto Dunes? Is it on the beach or the cove?
What are the accommodations like? Are there suites or villas? What
activities are ther for kids? Last summer we stayed at Villmare. Is there
anything comparable to that? What are the rates? We will be coming the
first week of June. All information would be so helpful!! Our e-mail
address is mkek@mcmsys.com Thank you!! Hi. I've got 3 questions: Just returned from a March spring break to Hilton Head. Stayed at the
Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort. Very reasonably priced -- $420 for
six days; cute, small, efficiency apt-like room with bedroom, double bunks
in hall and fold out bed. Liked it very much. Had great access to the
beach; too cold for the pool, but it looked well maintained. Unbelievably
quiet. Rented terrific new bikes from Sand Cats for just $18 each per
week. Enjoyed riding along beach. If you have kids, check out Main Street
Golf, especially if you have a tight budget. Best deal around. Calibogue
trip to Savannah we regretted. Expensive place for husband and kids to
nap. Should have driven. Only about 5 minutes worth of guide talk given.
Wasted money. Enjoyed biking to Shelter Cove. If you go to Harbour Town or
anywhere in Sea Pines, take lots of bug goo -- as somebody else wrote,
don't know what they are, but they bite. Best thing was relaxing on beach.
Buy beach paddles and ball, frisbee at Walmart and get tan. . . Went
horseback riding inland and enjoyed that a lot too. $20 adults, $15 kids
for an hour. Fun, fun, fun and lots of gators around. I'm looking for a seasonal rental-Jan thru March that doesn't cost an
arm and a leg. We are a retired couple in our early 50's who would like to
find a place to stay while we look around to maybe relocate later. Have
been in the are before, lived there in the early 60's- loved it. Any info
would be very helpful........THANKS I live just over the bridge in savannah, ga. I have a time share and
own a condo. I love visiting HHI. I can't wait until I retire and move to
that beautiful island. Look for me during the week of may 18th at Seacrest
Surf & racquet Club. I am considering coming to Hilton Head for the first time this summer.
But have no idea as to where to stay. We are accostom to renting a beach
house on the Outer Banks and would like similar lodging but don't have any
information. Would any realtors please e-mail me so that I can send an
address to get some info. Going to HHI in July for a family reunion at the Radisson Suites. The
reunion is for a weekend, would like to stay on the island for 4 or 5 more
days. Looking for a nice place that would be suitable for us and 1 year
old twins. Any suggestions? My family has been going to Hilton Head Island for the past 7 years. We
have always stayed at Sea Pines Plantation at the Marriott's Monarch
Resort. It is a beautiful place to vacation. This year (March 97) we
bought a time share at Marriott's Grande Ocean Resort and it was
beautiful. My twin sister,Megan, and my friend Kristin and I went with our
parents and had the best time. We rode bikes all over the island swam in
the ocean and just relaxed. The best place to eat we think is Jump and
Phils, best place to meet guys is the grocery store by the Holiday Inn or
on the beach by the Holiday Inn. Oh,we met this really cute guy at the
Grande Ocean Resort when we stayed there he had a goat-t and a University
of Miami hat,and his name is Andy, and we never really got to talk to him
so we just want to say hey if you are reading this, we were the three
girls in the Royal Tern building on the third floor who wore hats all the
time. 4/1/97 We were in Hilton Head over February break staying at a place we
do not own and had the best weather you could ask for. (sunny and 70's and
80's) We enjoyed Hilton Head Brewing Co. and Wild Wings Cafe. We are
owners at Harbour Club in Harbour Town and were concerned when we read
that the pool was not maintained and the whirlpool was broken. We
immediately contacted the Marriott who maintains this property. They
called us back this morning and have informed us that everything is up and
running. Thank you Kim for making us aware of this problem as we are going
to stay at Harbour Club April 20th. Joanne (campbell@auburn.cnyric.org)
We have gone to Hilton Head for three years during the summer. We have
a timeshare at The Island Club. It is located directly on the beach. It is
a very nice and relaxing place. Last year, unfortunately,we were chased out
of Hilton Head by Hurricane Bertha(on my birthday). My parents were taking
me out to dinner at The Old Fort Pub,but we never got there. We usually go
to the Cracker Barrel, order Giuseppi's Pizza,Fudruckers(when we arrive
for lunch),and Antonio's Italian Restaurant. We have been to
Fitzgeralds,Carmen's, and Crabby Nick's also. We go minature golfing and I
have always wanted to go on the Dolphin cruises. Hopefully this year, if
we go,we will get to try out some new places. If you have any
suggestions, just e-mail me.(if you are between the ages of 15-18 and male
definately e-mail me)!! Bye!! From Jenn-15/f. I am a sophomore at Indiana University and have been visiting the
island for 17 years. This summer I would like to live and work on the
island from the month of may through August. I have three questions: Can
you suggest an affordable one -two bedroom apartment or house? Do you have
to be 21 to waitress? Are there any restaurants that offer applications
on-line? Thanks very much! hey! could you please give me directions to hilton head island resort
from myrtle beach. i will be there this wednesday 4/2 - sunday 4/6 thanx a
lot!! Just wondering how I can get information on fishing guides in the
Hilton Head area. We are planning a trip in Sept. an would like to set up
a charter. Thanks Roy I visited Hilton Head Island for the first time just this past week in
March. My parents have been going for the past couple years and have
finally purchased a house in Indigo Run right on the Golden Bear golf
course. The crazy crab is a great place to eat, while I found Crabby Nicks
not as good, even though they were loaded with bussiness. I loved playing
golf at the golden bear in Indigo Run, and The Golf Club at Indigo Run is
very nice, but it is private and only accepts 385 members. I also like
Rose Hill which is off the Island. If you want to take golf lessons,
definetly go to the Island Golf school, right on folly road, where the
driving range is. They are great there. I was there from 3/15/97 - 3/22/97
Will be at HHI in June '97. Need feedback on Port O'Call in Shipyard
Plantation and would like to know if there are any golf packages available
for approx. 4-days? Would like info. on the following: good dolphin
cruise, Gregg Russell schedule for the month of June, miniature golf and
mom/child acivities, shopping, best seafood stands, groceries (driving up
from Savannah) and snorkeling areas. Saw on the log that there were many
bike rental places but no references. Called Hilton Head Bike Rental and
they quoted beach bikes $25 wk. discounted to $18 wk. Do I need to rent in
advance? Any need to sightsee in Beaufort? Plan to see Charleston one day.
However, HHI sounds pretty enough to just stay there. Really excited about
our upcoming visit and enjoyed reading the travelogue! Notes for HHI - I spent only 2 hours on Hilton Head (busy work schedule). I liked the
Hilton Head Brewing Co., which provided great buffalo wings, great beer,
and pleasant surroundings. I'll go back as soon as I get the chance. Visiting HHI in June, but wondering if anyone's checked out the new
Disney resort. I hear it's at Shelter Cove and NOT on the beach - a
possible drag. Thanks in advance. We have enjoyed vacationing at Hilton Head's Shipyard Plantation for
several years now. We stay, and I would strongly reccommend, Beachwalk. It
is just behind the Crystal Sands Resort about 150 yards to the beach.
Prices are very ($795 for a three bdrm, 3.5 bath) cheap in the sport
season (middle of August) and the weather and surf are still comparable to
the heart of summer. Clean pool, free tennis, and golf discounts
available. Villas are very secluded in a beautiful setting typical of
Hilton Head. Don't miss the excellent seafood buffet at the crystal Sands
Resort for under $20. Other eateries I would suggest are Shuckers for
lunch, of course the Salty Dog for a casual night on the Calibogie Sound
for margaritas and peel-and-eat shrimp, and a place called Steamers
(beside the Holiday Inn). It seems like nobody knows about this place, but
it is excellent-huge portions and very affordable. For golf either Shipyard
Golf Club or go off the island to Rose Hill for about $23 for 18 and a
cart. I would also suggest spending a day or at least part of a day in
Savannah. Take in its old world charm, plenty of antique shops, and have
lunch on the water at the Shrimp House. Oh, don't forget to pick up a
caramel apple the size of a softball, maybe bigger, at the candy store on
the water. I can't give away all of my secret spots, but hopefully these
few tips will make your stay more enjoyable. Bye for now. Stayed at the Beach and Tennis Resort for the last two years during
Spring Break. It was a wonderful trip each year. This year, it was about
85 all week. I came down with my tennis team from school. If anyone who
reads this is planning a trip or is staying, my friend Dawn and I are
looking for the phone number or address of two guys who live at the Beach
and Tennis Resort. Their names are Eric and Jose (Rafa). They live in room
AR342, and they are from Honduras. Jose has my phone number and address
and has called me one time, but he did not leave a return phone number.
Please help!! Hi! I'll be coming to HHI May 10 to begin my internship at one of the
hotels (not sure which one yet). I'm so excited about getting to live
there for 3 months but am curious about fun places to go (bars, clubs,
etc) for 20 somethings. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks! My family and I will be vacationing on Hilton Head between April 5-16
and would appreciate any info anyone can provide on both public and
private babysitting services as well as any day camps that might be
available. We have three kids, ages 22 months, 4 1/2 yrs. and 7 1/2 yrs.
Preferred location would be close to Shipyard plantation. Thanks in
advance Nick Wolff I enjoy playing golf and wanted to find out rates and locations on some
of your nices courses! thanks mike Any accomodations that accept pets, 2 adults? Planning a trip in in
April or May. thanks 3-17-97 Just got back from our 1st trip to HH Island....awesome!!! The
beaches are breathtaking...so broad and great for walking riding and even
pushing the stroller. Stayed at Harbour Club in Harbour town. Beatiful
Villas but pool not maintained and whirlpool broken. CQs was surprisingly
great...food, atmosphere and service. For a night out without the kids (we
have a 3 and 1 yr old) you must go to Harbourmaster's for dinner. Another
must is to visit the Seach Beach Marina Village. We cut through the villas
and walked for miles along the beach. The deli has .15 shrimp for happy
hour. The deli and cafe are great spots and so is the Salty Dog. We loved
blading with the kids in their strollers! Enjoy...we'll be back! We'll be visiting Hilton Head April 6 - 10 with our eight year old son.
Any recommendations for activities in case the weather's too cool for all
day on the beach! Also, what is price range for renting a sailboat in the
25' monohull range for an afternoon? Thanks for your help! DRIVING FROM ONTARIO TO HILTON HEAD ISLAND NEXT WEEK. WE ARE STAYING AT
RADISSON SUITE HOTEL. ANY COMMENTS ABOUT HOTEL? ANY ACTIVITY
SUGGESTIONS?DINING RECOMMENDATIONS? THANKS. CAN'T WAIT TO GET AWAY FROM
THE SNOW. Any BABYSITTERS out there? Our family will be visiting HHI during the
week of May 11 to 17. We have a children ages 4 and 2 1/2, both out of
diapers. Looking for some half days and a couple evenings. My just returned from a week in the Charleston area attending our sons
wedding. We enjoyed Boones Plantation, uss Yorktown, the carriage ride
downtown. We did not enjoy our accomidations at the sea cabins at Isle of
Palms. They neglected to tell us that there was daily maid service for an
extra charge, clean towels were an extra charge and I have slept on a
better matteress in a $29.95 motel room. We did enjoy the wedding,
rehearsel dinner at Magnolia's and all the other tourist things that we
did.We were there 2-18 to 2-25-97 Are there ant paar three golf courses on Hilton Head? Thanks, Stan
Green I am trying to find the e-mail addresses for some of the hotels located
on Hilton Head Island. Is there any way that you could give me any of the
address or help to find them. Thank You Lora Hogan (hogan@Sawyer.edu)

the Golden Isles Villas in S.C. If anyone has been to this area, could you

Jon Yates /MA We'll be travelling to HHI late June for the first time and staying at
my parent's condo in Shipyard Plantation. Since my folks are adult winter
traveller's, we need suggestions for things to do, places to eat for
family of 5 (three boys 10, 6, and3) on a budget. I've read alot about
Gregg Russell concerts and day camp-can anyone tell me more about him or
where to get more information? Do we need advance reservations Gregg
Russell concerts, bikes, and dinner? Also, are there any morning activity
programs appropriate for toddlers, so my husband and I can get in a little
golf. Any suggestions for courses for the novice golfer? submitted3/7/97

March 24 to 31 and wondering if there are canoe, kayaking or other water
activities that are less mainstream than what the big resorts offer. I can
be reached at deltastg@mailbag.com Hilton Head is a spectacular island to visit. I had the best experience
at a fine dining reataurant on Hilton Head Plantation called THE OLD FORT
PUB. The restaurant sits right in the water and there is a beautiful
sunset every evening at 7:30p.m. The management really takes care of the
customers. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is peaceful. The
southern hospitality really shows at this wonderful restaurant!! I highly
recommend it!! Hi! We are college students from Ohio and we're going to be down in
Shipyard Plantation the second week of March. We want to know where good
dance clubs and bars are on the island. Or any other ideas to have fun. .

CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN. AG 2/24/97 My husband and I would like to take our 15-month old daugher on a
vacation to HH in early April. I'd love to find a resort that would have a
nursery/camp for her to enjoy while we play golf (I hate the idea of her
cooped up in a hotel room with a babysitter for 8 hours a day!) Any
suggestions??? 2-22-1997 have been coming to hhi for 15 years. own a home in sea pines
(on the rental market if interested). we love the island anytime. october
is gorgeous, december is extraordinary (golf and beach walking every day).
love to eat at Neno Il Toscano--about a year old and by far the best
italian food on the island. during the summer, salty dog at south beach is
fun--great hot dogs and daiquiris. Current date: 2/21/97 IN June, 1996, our family visited Hilton Head
Island. The beaches were excellent and in general we had a good time. I
would recommend Fitzgerald's Restuarant. I would not recommend the
Quarterdeck Restaurant at Harbour Town. While the sunset was fantastic,
the food was poor and overpriced. The service was even worse than the
food. Were not able to complain to the manager at the time of our visit
but sent two letters subsequently to which I received no response. Go to
Harbour Town to see the sunset, but do not go to the Quarterdeck
Restaurant. Some friends and I are planning a trip to Hilton Head in the first week
of April. Will it be warm enough that time of year to enjoy the beach? And
what will the scene be like at night? Also, I'd appreciate a hotel or
condo recommendation, preferably ocean front, $100-$200 a night. Thanks!
My fiancee and I are looking to be married in Hilton Head July 97. A
friend suggested the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Is there any other place (cozy
and romantic) that you can suggest we tie the knot? Help, please! My fiancee and I are looking for a place to spend our
honeymoon (Aug. 3-10), and have been considering Hilton Head. I know
several friends who have been there, and they all enjoy it tremendously.
My question, is it suitable for honeymoon. We are looking for a nice beach
to relax upon, some good restaurants, and the other extras like horseback
riding, shopping, etc. Jennifer doesn't care much for golf, so I don't
know if I will be able to play or not. But, if someone would give me some
tidbits of help, you would be helping me tremendously. Thanks a bunch! My wife and I will be visiting Hilton Head from Oct 11th to Oct 18th of
this year. I would be interested in renting direct from an owner an
Oceanfront 2 bedromm villa in Palmetto Dunes. Preferably in Barrington,
Windsor Court,or Windsor Place. Please respond to e-mail 72133.2707@Compuserve.com
Thanks Bill Harkness My husband and I have been going to Hilton Head with our best friends
for five springs. We've had a blast every vacation. People always ask us
why we don't choose another vacation destination and our repy is "Why?"
When it comes to where to eat or go, there are so many options it's hard
to choose. Big Rocco's a great place for italian food and for live music,
especially on the jam session night. The jam sessions is where the host
band invites other entertainers from the island to perform. We love the
frozen drinks from Crazy Crab while sitting on the rocking chairs by the
lighthouse at Sea Pines Plantation. For happy hour cocktails on an outside
deck, listening to great old tunes, eating 10 cent shrimp go to La Polas/Kingfisher.
The tunes are sung by Pete Carroll, he usually starts performing the
weekend of the Heritage Classic...once again we enjoy cocktails there
sitting on rocking chairs. If there's a night and you want to cook in, go
see Barnacle Bill for fresh shrimp and have a shrimp boil. He has a stand
right on 278 about a mile between Folly Field Road and Shelter Cove. For
good, inexpensive italian food (great pizza, calzones, pasta) go to
Giuseppi's Pizza in the Shelter Cove Plaza. For a littlle night life,
you've got to go to Wingo's..live bands...dancing...darts...good times! So
many restaurants, so little space...Margaritas, The Salty Dog Cafe, Wild
Wing Cafe for great wings, and so much more! Althouugh, we go for the golf
and tennis it does seem like we spend a majority of our time eating and
enjoying cocktails. Hope everyone enjoys Hilton Head as much as us! Hello, my name is Stephen Davis and I am a student at Elon College. A
small group of my freinds and I are visiting your island from April 25-27
for a small vacation away from school. Four out o fhte six of us enjoy
bodyboarding and surfing. I was on the World Wide Web last night searching
for information on wave heights and conditions but I was unable to find
any. I did find the ordinance that states that there is no surfing or
bodyboarding insid ethe designated swimming area's but that was the only
information on surfing that I was able to obtain. I was wondering if you
could send me any information on wave heights and conditions or any web
addresses that would contain this information for Hilton Head Island.
Anything that you are able to send me would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you for your time. In Christ, Stephen Davis, 3936 Campus Box, Elon
College, NC 27244. E-Mail: davis5m0@numen.elon.edu We are staying at the Disney Hilton Head Resort in June 1997. Can
anyone give me information for this resort, such as what you liked and did
not like about your stay or the facilities. Also what resort activities we
should not miss while we are there. We have two preschool age children.
We are interested in renting a villa, sleeps 5 for the first week of
May, preferably in the Shipyard Plantation, either Colonade Club, Port
OCall, or Evian. Near beach and has a pool. Golf discount or free golf
would be great. Non-smoking also. Anyone who can assist please email me
back. Many thanks to those who have already replied last month and I have
those on file for future use. We've spent a week in May at Kiawah for the last 5 years but would like
to try Hilton Head. What is the best way to rent a 1 or 2 bedroom
condo/villa near water and pool? Want something nice, quiet and clean. I will be on Hilton Head April 3-6. Is that the weekend of the Heritage
Gold Tournament? If so, how do I get tickets? I haven't been to a
professional golf tournament before. Any suggestions about where and what
to watch would be appreciated. My friends and I want to travel to Hilton Head Island for Spring Break
this year but we need to know how much the hotel is going to cost and
where to stay. Any suggestions? My family is considering going back to Hilton Head in mid-June '97.
There would be 2 adults and two children, ages 4 & 6. I'm looking to rent
a condo from a private owner if possible. Please email any information on
who I can contact in this regard to me at Naneki32@aol.com Thank you in
advance for your help. I am interisad in a comdo for April 1997. For about 800.00 a week. Two
bedrooms Thank you Jim Molnar Hi! i am a 12 year old that has had the great experince to explore the
wonders of Hilton Head Island.we were traveling down to Orlando,Flordia.
but we hade made reservations at Hilton Head for 3 days and 2 nights.Since
this was 3 years ago I was 9 and my little sister was 2 and a half.We
justed wanted to go to Disney World(like any other kid).I thought it would
be boring and un intersting. but little did I know that I was just
starting the begining of a family ritual .i had fun and loved the beach
while my sister liked the starfish and sat in a little tidal pool of
water. After thoese three wonderful days my parents did not want to leave!
My dad wanted to show my mom time shares down there .But she refused
too.so this left my dad a little disappointed.i mean having to leave a
beautiful island and wondering if you will ever return. So after we got
back from our trip,my dad decided to ook into buying a time share. His
brother(my uncle0 had various time shares around the world). My dad chose
Mariott's Grande Ocean Club Resort.(without a tour or seeing the looks of
things!)so we have been going down to HHI for a while now and love. Our
time share is right on the beach and there are 4 pools and 1 in the
making!i love HHI and eveything there! i love eating at Land's End and the
Westen which is a resort but has a excellent restaurnts. It is a buffet
with Alaskin crab legs and salad bar soup and a 13 foot dessert table(my
favorite!) The beach is not crowded like other beaches. There are not big
tidal waves but there is enough to keep your boogie board going.i also
went on a Dolphin Crusie which was really cool.Lastly,I hope you vist HHI
and love as much as i do! We have been discussing a visit to Hilton Head this June or July. Would
appreciate any information on accomodations, activities, best areas, etc.
There would be two adults and two teenagers--although we've been tossing
around the idea of allowing them each to bring a friend. That would depend
on the type of accomodations and rates we find. We are not golfers or
tennis players, so the beach would be the main attraction for us. A clean,
well-kept, beachfront condo in a nice, safe area--that is still
affordable--is what we're looking for. Any suggestions or input about the
area would be appreciated. thanks 1/27/97 In the past four years we have vacationed at HHI and stayed at the
Crowne Plaza Resort (formerly Crystal Sands), but this year we thought we
would rent a villa in Evian, if possible. Could you send rental info or
possible agencies to contact. We need to sleep 5. We have come down the
last to March breaks, and the two summers prior. In March we found other
than golf and tennis, you could not veg in the pool or the ocean. Weather
was great (60s and low 70s) but not as nice as being in the hot summer
time. More action and people and activities to do in the warm months. Also
at the Crowne Plaze (which is a fabulous hotel) we found in March a lot of
business conventions there and they took over the hotel more or less.
Otherwise, a great holiday spot for young and old. My son roller blades
and bikes all day long and my self and my daughter find plenty of
shopping. The Southern hospitality is great. My husband got a hole-in-one
in Shipyard's course and that was a bonus on last year's holiday. Golfing
is expensive especially if you want to take a teenager with you. Las Vegas
Golf & Tennis is a great place for golf and tennis bargains, and so is
Players World. Guiseppe's great for salad and pizza. Up here in Toronto we
look forward to a friendly visit to HHI in the very near future. It is
only a short 17 hours drive down and it is such a beautiful drive. Any
rental information would be appreciated. Thanks. We have come to HHI two summers in a row, and then two March breaks in
a row. We find the summers more enjoyable because of the longer days, and
the fact that you can enjoy the pool and ocean. This year we may come in
May. We have stayed always at the Crown Plaza Resort, which is fabulous,
but this time we may try a condo rental in Shipyard. Any suggestions on
the best rental (I need 2 or 3 bedrooms, and a deal on golfing)? HHI is
great. We used to go to Naples every year, but HHI is so friendly and
southern that we have enjoyed it more. We're from Toronto. I enjoy reading
everyone's comments and I like the HHI expert also. Looking for information for condo rentals in July. Planning family
reunion. Please direct me to some information. Thanks - Jim We've been going to HH for the past 5 years, but have never stayed in
Sea Pines. Any recommendations for two parents and four teenagers?? We
like to be able to get to the beach easily by walk or bike and do not golf
or tennis. 1/97 Coming to Hilton Head 3-29/4-6-97 - Looking for golf courses in a 25
mile radius outside of Hilton Head to golf with our 2 teen-age boys(We
will golf on the Island also-but too expensive when we golf with the boys
everyday). Thanks, Terri Please would you mail me out some information on staying and golfing on
the island, we are planning a vacation in March, please mail it to Cathy
Gamble P.O. Box 692 Harrison, Mi. 48625 Thank you very much 1/7/97 - We have been visiting HHI during March and April for the past
few years and always look forward to returning. We have enjoyed staying at
the Adventure Inn in a nice room with a kitchenette for quite reasonable
prices for being on the beach. Weather has been between 70 and 80 degrees
F. Mostly we just hang out at the beach all day, walk the shoreline, and
try a few restaurants during the week. Fratello's has fine Italian food,
the Brew Co. had delicious, large portions, and of course... BEER. There
are many places to rent bicycles if interested. We took a sunset ship ride
to watch the dolphins. It's also only 30 minutes from Savannah, Georgia
which is an extraordinary city to experience. I am planning a trip this spring and would like information on your
area. Example: Places to see, Places to Stay, Places to eat, things to do,
Etc. Send care of Sandy Garmon, 2415 Co. Rd. 54, Bremen, AL 35033. Thank
You very much, 5th January 1997 Hi & a Happy New Year to you all We are from Harrogate
in England and are coming to HH at Easter following a relaxing weekend in
HH after business trip to South Carolina last February. We almost feel like residents on the Island...we have been coming since
1981 and have owned numerous time shares but now a condo in Shipyard. We
love the wide beaches for walking and riding. Our son, a lawyer, is
enamored to the original Crazy Crab's and we love the salad bar at the
Chart House. Truffles in SeaPines is also a favorite. For 90's golfers we
like Indigo Run and can almost always get a tee time. We rent our condo
through Shoreline, the Taylor's do an excellent job...were most helpful
with the hurricane scars this last summer. ..Looking forward to returning
and eventually retiring! Thanks....Dick and Liz Is there a place to go crabbing on the Island? Places to buy fresh
seafood? We are looking for a new place to visit! Every couple of years our
friends and family get together for a week. We have been to Sanibel Island
for the past 20 years and would love to try something different. I have
read may nice comments about Hilton Head, and a few of us enjoy golf. If
there is any information anyone has that could help assist us in locating
a nice place to stay (safe also, for children) it would be greatly
appreciated. We are looking at the first week of June(7-14). You may
E-Mail me at Kasls@aol.com Thanks to all!! I'm planning a golf vacation on HH for the first week of March. What's
the best place to stay(I've rented a villa accomodation in Sea Pines past
years)? HH is really a wonderful place for the golfers. "Dommage" (french
word)that this paradise is unknown at Montreal(Canada). Any one with personal expereince investing in real estate on HH as a
2nd home, ie benefits, returns, what to avoid, best locations. Thanks. I went to Hilton Head a year and one-half ago for the first time; after
four days there, I called a realtor because I knew I wanted a home there;
bought the first house from the car phone on the way home to Maryland;
have sold and bought again since then; just came back from Christmas '96
vacation there where temperatures were in seventies and even eighties one
day; love the restaurants, especially Stellini's, Neno's, Brian's and Cafe
Wexford; the new fine arts center is fabulous; so much to do day and
night; new movie theatres now bring total up to about 20. Would be willing
to talk with anybody about the place and where to stay; my place is
presently rented, but I know others that are good. It's heaven on earth!!!
1/2/97 We will be visiting HHI at the beginning of Oct.,1997. We will be
staying at the Adventure Beach Inn and Resort. Does anyone have any
comments about this resort? Also, are there any croquet courses on the
island? My husband and I have a backyard set, but would love to play on a
regulation course. Is there a bus service to Hilton Head from Gainesville, FL? We have visited my parents, who winter on HH each of the last two
Februarys. We will be there again this coming February. While we enjoy
visiting the folks, we all need some time to ourselves. In the past we
have visited Beaufort, Savannah and Charleston; but we are looking for
something unique to do this year. What can you suggest for February fun on
the Island or within a two hour drive? We are looking forward to getting
out of the snow-covered north and revisiting HH. I am looking for a place to stay in Hilton Head for about four nights
that will accept pets. We have a medium size dog we would like to bring
with us. Any ideas? Thanks. Restaurants: Best meal with excellent food, good service and a cheerful
atmosphere was Neno al Toscante. It's new so you need to call and get the
number. It's worth the effort. La Maisonette is OK, but not great. Avoid
Crabby Nick's; it's not too good. Family Reunion Home at Hilton Head, Summer 1997: . I want to hold a
family reunion vacation at HH next summer. I need a home(s) that will
accommodate six families, ( six couples and four children). I would perfer
beachfront, but will consider anything that is good quality. Please e-mail
me at, THATTRICH@wow.com. Many thanks for your help. My great grandmaa lives in Hilton Head Island, Great grandma Webb. My
grand parents live in SC in Keywee key something like that. Just passing
by. Hi - we are looking to vacatin in HH for a week spring 97. When does
the weather turn nice 70+? Would like suggestions a place to stay dad+wife+

and good golf. Probably a 3 bedroom townhouse or home. Thanks have a great
vacation. MY FAMILY AND I ARE CONSIDERING HILTON HEAD ISLAND FOR OUR FAMILY
VACATION FOR THE JULY/AUGUST 1997 TIME PERIOD. COULD YOU PLEASE SEND US
SOME INFORMATION REGARDING VACATION IDEAS FOR YOUR AREA. THANK YOU. MY
ADDRESS IS: TERESA HORN, 4400 SAM PECK ROAD, LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS 72212
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE. we just returned yesterday from our first trip to HH. The weather was
good, could have been sunnier. We stayed at the Monarch in Sea Pines, it
was very nice. Our 5 year old Zach loved the heated pool! We found things
a bit pricey but that's to be expected. There are almost too many
restaurants to choose from but we especially enjoyed The Hilton Head
Brewing Co. good luck finding it! for that matter good luck finding any
place you're looking for, there must be an ordinance banning large
colorful easy to find signs. Also a bit surprised to not find any comments
about those traffic circles are they fun or what? I can't imagine what
traffic must be like during the peak season! Overall a wonderful place to
visit! We are planning to drive to South Carolina around the end of Dec, '96
or begining of Jan '97, would like recomendations on lodging in Hilton
Head for 2-3 nights. I'm looking to get information about Hilton Head. I'll be visiting
there in Oct.of '97 and would like to find out = about it.=20 I've been to
travel agents but all they could furnish was = accomodation=20 prices.
What I would like would be aan info packet about Hilton = Head in=20
general, you know, golf stuff, shopping, Things to do when we get =
there.=20 How can I get that type of information? Any help you can give =
would be=20 very much appreciated. =20 Thank-you in advance I just discovered your location on the web. Very nice indeed! Lots of
helpful stuff here. Hubby is from Columbia where he still has family. Hee
and the youngest son are both Univ. of SC grads. In spite of all the SC
connections, we have never been to HH! Just wanted you to know that I'll
be checking here from time to time for good info on places to stay and
good food to eat! Thanks! Need a home(s) for a family reunion vacation. I am looking for a large
home or two, close to one another, that will accomodate six couples and
four children. Of course, I would perfer beackfront, but I will consider
anything of good quality. many thanks, Tom Hattrich St. Louis, MO I recently accepted an offer to come and stay at Spinnaker resort by
phone. The deal offered to me is good but I would like to know a little
about the place from someone who has been there or is not associated with
the resort so that I can hear an unbiased opinion. Any response will be
appreciated. You have to go to Wild wings resturant,,,it makes the hottest wings I
have ever had and go back time and time again. From experince have found
that Big Bamboo was not our cup of tea,,,,and Henrys (sic) was
terrible....Looked like everyone needed green cards...Do Fuddruckers once
and that should be that forever. Have a condo on the island for the past
five years, and love going back twice a year...If I was independently
wealthy, I would be there right now. I have owned a condo on the Island for about six years and feel that it
is one of the finest places to spend a vacation you could imagine. Our
condo is at the Four Seasons resort and overlooks the ocean. If I was
independently wealthly, I would be there right now. I love Hilton Head Island. I've been ther twice int the last two years
and i plan to keep going back. It is such a great atmosphere and a
relaxing place to stay. I absolutely love it . It is so different than
Ohio (which is where I'm from) There is so much more to do there. Sight
seeing bike rides fishing the SAlty Dog Cafe. It has to be one of my
favorite places in the U.S. I am interested in recieving some info on Condo's for rent during the
97 season in the southcarolina area. Please mail any info that is avaiable.
P.zeldin, 33 Marian Court, Sterling, Va. 20165 October 27, 1996 - Planning a trip to Hilton Head next August. Family
of four, with possible fifth if Grandma comes. Looking for nice,
reasonably priced villa oceanfront or oceanview with 2 or 3 BR. Need some
HH education, never having been there before! Just want to eat at good
(not expensive) restaurants, lounge on the beach and play a little golf.
New golfers, so any advice on "easier" courses greatly appreciated.
Thanks. Hi everyone: October 25,1996 I have been going to Hilton Head with my
parents for about 10 years now. I turned 21 this past July and now that I
am legal to visit the bars I would like some information on the Spring
Break scene in March. Is it a popular place to go for Spring Break? If
anyone has any information, please let me know. I have about 6 girlfriends
anxious for a great Spring Break this year. Thanks! Vanessa Melnick My fiance and I are from Denver, CO, and we will be married outside
inthe courtyard at the Marriott Grand Ocean Resort on May 29, 1997.
Wewould like recommendations of restaurants that could accomodate a
partyof approximately 30-35 people for dinner. Good food, and
reasonablypriced would be great. The Great Plains Cattle Company indicated
thatthey have a private room and have supplied us with a menu. Can
anyoneattest to the atmosphere and food? Any recommendations would be
greatlyappreciated. I have been to island once, and fell absolutely in
lovewith it - but unfortunately it was a short stay and I didn't have time
to explore many of the restaurants. All of our friends and family,
fromOntario, Canada, Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Michigan, and New York
areexcited about coming to the island in May. Thanks for your opinions.
My family went to Hilton Head in 1995 and loved it! We are now planning
one going back this year with my mom's brother and his family. They have
two boys 12 and 14 and they were wondering what they could do in Hilton
Head. Any suggestion? If you have any information on a place in Shipyard
plantation called Evion-please send it. I am planning a 1997 trip to Hilton Head and I am considering a stay at
the Crowne Plaza resort. Does anyone have any information or experiences
about this resort? After spending a week on Hilton Head (10/12-19th), we cannot wait to go
back for another week. We stayed at a time share in Sea Pines Plantation.
It is called Monarch by Marriott. The weather was absolutely great and the
water temperature was in the high seventies. We took a boat trip on the
Calibogue line to Savannah for a four hour tour of the old city and then a
two hour bat trip back. A great value at $33 per adult. Try it you'll love
it. The sea food is great, especially the shrimp. Try Nantucket Seafood.
Two 1lb lobsters for $24 with all the fixings. Crazy Crab is touristy and
expensive, but food is ok. Bike rentals are a must as there are many miles
of paved bike trails throughout the plantations. Saw many alligators on
our daily rides. We definitely will go again!! MSS Spent a week a HH during first week in October. Rotten weather! We did
have a memorable dining experience at the Gaslight Restaurant. Excellent
French fare. Rack of Lamb was out of this world and the wine list was very
deep. Would gladly return again. My wife & I just got back from our first stay at Hilton Head
10/12-10/19), and we both agree that it was one of the nicest places, if
not THE nicest, that we'd ever stayed at, and we've traveled a lot! We
stayed in Sea Pines, at South Beach, and we couldn't have picked a better
spot. Our villa overlooked the water, where the Atlantic and the Sound (?)
met. Deer walked by our porch in the morning, and every day we watched the
dolphins swim and play. Sundowns were beautiful, whether watched from our
deck, while riding bikes on the beach, or having a drink outside at the
Quarterdeck. Am going to Hilton head Sat the 19th for a week. Is there a piano bar
there? Also, what events are taking place other than tennis or golf(I
don't do either. Thanks WE'RE TRAVELING TO HHI APRIL 97 AND STAYING AT PORT O CALL. NEED INFO
ON LOCATION AND QUALITY, ALSO GOLF COURSES CLOSE BY We have never been to Hilton Head before. We are contemplating going
over Christmas week and staying at the new Disney resort there. We would
prefer to be going to Walt Disney World to stay at the Vacation Club,
where we have stayed many times before, and like very much, but for one
quarter the cost and one day's less driving (We drive from Canada), we can
have the same accommodation at Hilton Head. So, my question is, has anyone
ever stayed at the Hilton Head Disney resort and, if so, how did they like
it? I have found no mention of it anywhere in any of the Hilton Head
internet information. My further question is, would it be dreary and
depressing to be at Hilton Head at that time of year and should we not
persevere with the extra day's driving to get to Florida? Sept. 96 - Long time visitor to HHI since 1978. Just returned from a
great trip. Stayed in Shipyard. Looking for list of similar rentals to
Evian in Shipyard. (Week of September 14, 1996) We stayed in HH for a week with beautiful
weather and beaches. A quick summary of some of the restaurants we went to
are We just got back to Ontario after a week of vacation based on Hilton
Head Island ( our first time !) . Thoroughly enjoyed our whole trip. The
ocean was as warm as bathwater and the weather was sunny and hot, though
very humid for most of the week. We would recommend: i) staying at
Shorewood or elsewhere on either South or North Forest Beach. We loved the
seafood at Hudsons, and enjoyed our dinner at the Great Plains Cattle
Company. All of the aforementioned businesses treated us in a first rate
manner and all were relatively reasonably priced. We can't wait to go back
!! My fifth great-grandfather, David Cutler Braddock, visited Hilton Head
in 1745 when his S. C. provincial galley, the Beaufort, was stationed at
the south end of the island to help protect against Spanish attacks from
St. Augustine. He left his name on that end of the island and its cove
where the vessel was moored. After over five years research, I just
published a book, Wooden Ships - Iron Men, which relates his exploits and
those of his father-in-law, William Lyford Sr., his brother-in-law William
Lyford Jr., and his son, John Cutler Braddock, all mariners of note during
the colonial and Revoltionary periods. It is ironic that the names of the
tip ends of two of the most exclusive resort islands in Southern waters
are of brother-in-laws: Braddock point on Hilton Head and Lyford Cay on
New Providence in the Bahamas. Lyford Cay residential resort, home of the
likes of Sean Connery and Arthur Hailey, stands on land granted to Wm.
Lyford Jr. for his part in South Carolinian Col. Andrew Deveaux's raid
that drove the Spanish from Nassau in 1783. Thanks for this opportunity to
enlighten you on a little of Hilton Head's illustrious history. J. G.
Braddock, Sr. My wife & I will be visiting HH in the very near future for a
conference. We'd like to know if there are any Karaoke clubs & what are
the main things to do in the area if golf & tennis are not your cup of
tea. Thanks We are thinking about going down to Hilton Head this Thanksgiving. I've
never been and don't know where to stay, but I would also like to know
what to expect with weather. Best tennis is at VanderMeer. If you like German food try the
Hofbrauhaus. Hy there everybody!! Never been to HH, but watch out for that beautiful
tall guy from Holland, who will be serving you in some restaurant for this
christmas, it's my BROTHER IVO!!!! And we will come and see him them. Haa
die IVO, als je dit leest, denk dan even aan je zusje, helaas kan ik je
nog niet vinden op het net, maar dat komt nog wel, veel groetjes en tot
kerstmis!!! MARGOT Our family had a best dinner at CATTAILS RESTAURANT lots of fresh
seafood, home made bread and pasta it was so good we went back next day
for lunch. Had another wonderful time during easter weekend of '96. Too bad I was
only there for the weekend. Sometimes college sucks when you're forced to
leave HH for classes. Anyway, I think I packed two weeks of fun into three
days. The weather was fantastic (as if I could have expected anything
else), and the new Ocean Course really showed its teeth. The redesign was
great Mark!! Truffles in Sea Pines Center is still one of the best! Some
of the bike paths have been resurfaced and everything was as beautiful as
ever. Thanks to everybody that participated in the Great Beach Party that
weekend. Hey everybody in Cincy, Chicago, Atlanta, and NY. Can't wait to
go back soon!! We are planning to purchase a getaway vacation form my parents 40th
wedding anniversary. They are interested in a winter getaway, beach
brousing and shopping the outlet malls. What would they expect, weather
wise during the months of November through February? Also, if anyone can
recommend any nice package deals I would appreciate it. Thanks! I have never been to HH but my family & I would like to go there either
the first week in April, or mid-June. Which would be better? What is the
weather like there in April? Can you swim in the ocean, etc. Please email
me and let me know. Phyllis Burns My family had the poor judgement to visit Hilton Head this past weekend
with only Saturday night available to see Greg Russell at Harbortown. It
was really disappointing to learn that he does not perform on Saturdays!
Does any one know a way to find out if he will be touring this winter?
Especially, to Atlanta? Please e-mail response to DavLevitan@AOL.COM. I'd just like to add a word about Fitgerald's restaurant on South
Forest Beach Drive. Best swordfish dinner I ever had! I'm not sure how
they prepared it, but it was delicious and quite memorable! Great
atmosphere, too...overlooking the gardens and courtyard of the Adventure
Inn. Hi, my girlfriends and I are back from HH (8/29-9/2). We had the best
time. Action Sports took us on a great tour on waverunners. The Island is
absolutely beautiful and the people are so nice. We managed to find the
crowd bet. 25-35 every night for some dancing and mingling. Thursday night
at Kat Man Du is the best. Crazy Nick had some great seafood and clam
chowder. Can wait to go back. Over the past 2 years, my wife and I have traveled all the way from our
home in Tokyo to relax on the spectacular island of Hilton Head. This
year, we especially enjoyed an excellent dinner at Abes Shrimp House. The
"Smothered Shrimp and Crabmeat" special was exceptionally savory! We also
had a nice time sailing out on the catamaran, "Flying Circus." It is quite
large and since the number of passengers is limited to 6, there is plenty
of space to stretch out enjoy the scenery. Viewing the dolphins was an
additional pleasure, but please do not participate in the growing number
of tours that go out and throw food at these dolphins in order to attract
them to the boats. It is not only against the law to feed these amazing
creatures, it creates a situation where the dolphins start to rely on
these tours for their survival. Hilton Head Island, its lovely
surroundings, and the creatures that share this area do not deserve or
need this type of exploitation. My wife and I are celebrating our 50th anniversary next August 97. We
are very interested in information on places to stay for us, and our four
kids... now grown. We are on a budget, but are serious about trying to
select a spot on the Island, near the water, and still close to all the
activities and amenities for a week. Though our official date is in
August, we might be interested in taking any advantage of rates affected
by time of year. We'd appreciate hearing from any and all of you who can
supply such information. Thanks. Follow up from my earlier note... H2 is wonderful. My family went for
the first time and returned two days ago. Spectacular weather!!! Great
golf courses include Hilton Head National and the Cupp course at Palmetto
Hall. The Ocean course at Sea Pines was nice, though not great. Finally
the RTJ course at Palmetto Dunes makes my driveway look like a PGA caliber
track (RTJ is HORRIBLE!!!!). The Castaways and the Oyster factory were
both terrific and the Hilton Head Brewery was good. We can't wait till
next year!!! We will be visiting HHI 8/30 to 9/8. Where do we go to have fun (25-35
year old crowd), nightlife, beach. Also, is there any good place to roller
blade. Thanks for any info. you can provide. JT My husband and I have been visiting your wonderful island for the past
five years. We will in town September 7 - 14, 1996. Our favorite
restaurant is the Great Plains Cattle Company. The best steaks in the
world. We usually have dinner there at least 3 times. I will not order a
steak anywhere else i in the country because I know it will not compare to
Great Plains. It is a definite must for all vistors. We're going to Beaufort in November for Thanksgiving to visit Mom. We
figured we would stay in Hilton Head for 2 days. We've booked a The Hilton
Resort. If anyone can give me any feedback on this hotel and/or another
hotel Crown Plaza Resort or Crystal Sands. Any feedback would be helpful.
We will be possibly visiting in June 97, we are looking for family type
resorts. All inclusive if possible. I have two small children and will be
traveling with another family also with two small children. Please advise
of any resorts. Also acitivites Thanks, We visited Hilton head Island for the first time this July
(7/27-8/3/96). We loved it and plan to return next summer. Our favorite
resturant was the Cracker Barrel. Great country cooking, large portions
and very reasonable prices. We also found the Hofbrauhaus to also be a
very good resturant. We ate at the King Fisher and found it to be average
at best and expensive. Hello, My wife and I are going to HH to celebrate our Anniversary over
Labor Day Weekend. I am interested in chartering a sailboat for a day and
would like some quality contacts. Also would like to include one very nice
dinner (dinner cruise Can you purchase alcohol in restuarants and bars on
Sunday? How is the crabbing, fishing and shrimping? Where are the best
locations for each? I will be heading down to SeaPines in mid-August. What courses are in
good shape right now? My parents will be celebrating their 25 wedding anniversary on Sept.
18, and I would like to send them to HHI for the weekend following
(9/20-9/22). I would appreciate any suggestions on where to stay and eat.
I would like to put them up somewhere that has a great ocean view, but
still not too expensive. Please help?! Thanks My wife and I are looking for places to catch our own crabs on HH
island. We love to catch and steam our own fresh crabs We try the public
pier as you go on the island, that's quite a way from Palmetto Dunes, also
any really good fresh fish markets? Please send any information on honeymooning in Hilton Head. We are
interested in any all-inclusive packages that may be avialable. Thanks!
Most beautiful and relaxing place I've ever visited. Things that
impressed me most: the friendly people and beauty of the island. Visted HH fro teh first time in July of '96. Recommendations: My husband and I are returning to Hilton Head Aug 4-11 after a 3 year
hiatus. We have reservations at Crystal Sands. Would appreciate any
comments regarding the place. Send to rturrent@weir.net. Thanks First time vistor for the Labor Day weekend (8/29-9/2). Four late 20's,
female, non-golfers (miniature-golf, yes!). Any suggestions on what to do,
where to dine and find a good place to party at night. Thanks. My family (5 kids under 10) will be going to HH this September and have
never been before Could anyone suggest what sort of things we might do for
the week besides laying on the beach that would keep the interest of small
children and still not cost us a fortune. Thanks for the help in advance.
My family (2 children) and another family (4 children) are visiting HHI
the week of Aug 3 - Aug 7. We are travelling from Central New Jersey, we
were wondering if anyone know's approximately how long (hours/miles) it is
to HHI? - Thanks in advance I've been reading the responses of the people who have been to the
island, but I have not seen anyone mention the Radisson Suites Hotel. Is
this a bad sign? I'm going to be staying at there in August. Can anyone
give me some feedback on how nice a hotel the Radisson is or isn't?
Service, Food, Accomodations, etc. We were evacuated from the island last week in the middle of our
vacation? Just wondering if there was any damage sustained on the island.
We go every other year so we'll be back in '98. I am a 21 year old college student who has been to Hilton Head Island
at least 22 times. It is a great place to go. There are so many
activities, but I'll only tell you a few due to space. I enjoy the Murder
Mystery Cruise. It doesn't begin operating until mid June. There are two
on the island one departs from Shelter Cove and other from Harbour Town.
It is exciting solve a mystery, if you can go on fireworks night it is an
added treat. For the younger crowd I suggest Coconuts Comedy Club (you
have to be 18). If money isn't a problem I also suggest chartering a boat
to go night shark fishing out of South Beach Marina. Shuckers is a fun
place to hang out when there are hermit crab races. The beast beach for
the young crowd is the Holiday Inn. If you need any more information or
suggestions don't hesitate to email me. I could chat about Hilton Head for
hours. My husband and I have a 7-day vacation planned to Hilton Head beginning
on March 16, 1997. We have never been there but we had heard wonderful
things. I am wondering what the weather is like there at that time of the
year and what kind of clothes to take (I'd like to take advantage of the
late summer sales if shorts light cotton pants are appropriate.) Any
suggestions would be appreciated. 7/10/96. four stars (or is it four forks?) to a small mediterranean
restaurant called "Le Bistro", which is located in the pineland mall.
unfortunately it closes for a few weeks in july and august. the rack of
lamb, herb bread, good red wine and a variety of beers make it a great all
around place for a semi-expensive meal. I have a son 8 who wants to find treasure. Are metal detectors allowed
on the beaches? Will be staying at Red Roof Inn. Is this a good Idea or
should we stay somewhere else? $$ is tight. I've heard of this Russel
fellow. Also was wondering how long a drive from eastern Ohio? Will be
arriving the end of August. Any suggestions appreciated. I've been going to the island since I was 8 (27 now). I plan to come
back each year. There is something about the island that allows a
peacefull and relaxing stay in addition to 1000's of things to do for the
young and old without being hectic. I just hope Greg Russell stays in
Harbour Town long enough for my children to enjoy him as I have all these
years. We are planning a trip to HH for 2 weeks in Sept. (7 to 21) and are
looking for a place to stay. We have small kids so a pool, beach and
kitchen are important. Heard that South Beach is nice, how about Palmetto
Dunes? Thanks My husband Don and I have been vacationing on Hilton Head for about ten
years now. We love it. Our favorite places to eat are: Please!!! I am interested in obtaining information regarding the
purchase of properties(condos primarily) as investments. I would welcome
any information from anyone with first hand knowledge of profitability,
steps to follow, things to be aware of etc. No real estate agents, please!
Thank you- Dave at DCOLEMA1.IX.NETCOM.COM Our family had a fantastic dinner at a relatively new resturant called
"Neno il Toscano". It should not be missed if you enjoy Northern Italian
cuisine. Husband & wife vacationing in HHI in mid-July. We would love to receive
any info or suggestions of local attractions and interesting places to
visit. Thanks in advance! Please E-mail: Damiaen@msn.com I have been going to Hilton Head ever since I was about 3 or 4. I have
always enjoyed it. I am 15. We have stayed at BEACH AND TENNIS RESORT many
many times. I like it a lot. It is very nice. If you have any specific
questions about it I will be glad to answer them. If you have any children
it is great because at the pool area they have activities for kids. Let me
think of some places you can go. We ALWAYS go see Greg Russell at
Sea Pines. He is great for kids. There are a lot of teenagers down there,
so it is fun for me too. I could tell you a lot of things that we like to
do down there, but I don't want to waste so much room, so if you would
like to know more, or have any questions that I might know the answer to
just E- Mail me. I hope I spelled everything right! I just returned from HH. Here's my opinion of the places I dined in the
order of my preference: 1) Hudson's (Great food, service,
atmosphere); 2) Crazy Crab at Harbour Town (also good food and
service, a little crowded and noisy); 3) Big Rocco's (a relative
newcomer that obviously hasn't been discovered yet, but good food); 4)
Henry's Seafood House (no atmosphere, but decent food & service); 5)
Shuckers (this used to be one of my favorites, but it wasn't the
greatest this time, the food was ok, but the service and menu choices
weren't); 6) Crabby Nicks (although I listed this last, it was still quite
good. As for atmosphere, the building used to be an old Shoney's/Big Boy
and looks like it). Most of the meals at these places were $12-16 each. If
you want pretty good food cheap, try Henry's or Crabby Nicks. Most of the
meals at these were around $10. Shucker's has a buy one get one free deal
on Tuesdays that isn't well publicized. My wife and I will visit Monarch at Sea Pines in October of this year.
Any suggestions about the Time Share and what to do while their? Hello, my name is Dennis Benfante and I am staying on the Hilton Head
Island for a couple of days in August and was wondering if you could send
some information (via e-mail) about inexpensive/romantic things to do in
mid August. Any areas of great interest? Romance? Any help is appreciated.
WE HAVE 4 ADULTS AND 4 CHILDREN AND WILL BE IN HHH FROM AUG 3 TO THE 10
WE NEED A NICE PLACE TO STAY WITH A POOL AND CLOSE TO THE BEACH PLEASE
HELP US OUT. EMAIL ROOSTER@THOMSON.NET Recreation Vehicle enthusiasts: If you're headed to Hilton Head and own
a motorhome (Class A or C), the best place to camp is OUTDOOR RESORTS

coast. Privately owned sites for rent, all paved, pool and more. Never
stay ant- where else. See y'all in August '96. My family, including 3 teenagers, will be visiting HHI at the end of
June. We'd appreciate any recommendations on things to do and places to
see, restaurants. Also thinking of looking at a condo to buy. Please
write! As a first time visitor to Hilton Head, I would like to know of any key
places of interest to be seen. Please list any places of interest as well
as must sees. First time vistor for more than a weekend. What's happening during the
week of July 4th? 24 year old son (single) coming with us, need best
places for him to meet the ladies and party. Thanks! family with 2 children 2 & 8 spending third week in july at Hilton
Head. thinking about staying at Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis resort
or Crystal Sands, Crown Plaza Resort. Would prefer to have a place with a
seperate bedroom and also a kitchenette. Any comments or suggestions would
be greatly appreciated. Has anyone been to a seafood restaurant called Abes? I heard it did'nt
look so hot from the outside, but it had the best shrimp on the island.
Any comments? Thanks Bar none, Hilton Head Island is the best place on Earth! Distinguised conservative lady author is looking to rent a small home
or apartment in Hilton Head for 2-3 months beginning in January. Would
also consider sharing a house. Please e-mail me at wloven.aol.com if you
know of anything available. Thanks, We are going to HHI in late June and we are excited about driving from
MO is there anything to do besides golfing please E-MAIl me I am 19y/o
college student my husband and I and our 2 sons (8 & 12) are planning our first visit
to Hilton Head in July '96. We are staying at Disney's vacation resort.
Has anyone stayed there? Any opinions? thanks!!! We will be leaving soon for HHI and will staying at Evian in Shipyard
Plantation. Does anyone have information on bike rentals? I am also
interrested in activities such as sight seeing around the island. My husband and I are planning a trip to HHI in August and we are
planning to stay at the Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Resort on
Admiral's Row, south side. Can anyone tell me about this place? Is it
nice? I'd also like to try one of the dolphin watching cruises I've read
about on the net. Has anyone done that? Any other suggestions would be
great! We've been going to HHH for many years, mostly late spring and summer.
You would be hard pressed to find a restaurant anywhere in the country as
good as Cafe Europa. The food, the service, the view all are
excellent. Other favorites are Hudsons & Carmines. Stay away from Crazy
Crab - it is nothing but a tourist trap. 5/96. My fiance and I are looking to get married at Hilton Head next April of
1997. I have been going to Hilton Head since I was a little girl and it
truly holds a special place in my heart. We are wanting a small, intimate
wedding, preferably outside, for only 80 people. We have looked at a
couple of places but haven't found the "right one." Any suggestions? We just returned from HHI having rented a house in Sea Pines Plantation
from May 4-18. We had absolutely perfect weather the entire time! We have
vacationed there for most all of the past 20 years and are interested in
buying a retirement home on the Island. What is the job market like for an
upper-level executive? Where are the best areas to live? How is the real
estate market? We would appreciate hearing from Island residents,
especially those who are transplants. Thanks! My family and I are thinking about a vacation to Hilton Head. This
would be our first trip to the island and were wondering if anyone has any
information about the condo we are thinking about staying at. The name of
the condo is THE HILTON ISLAND BEACH AND TENNIS RESORT. We're planning to send my parents to Hilton Head Island for their 50th
wedding anniversary at the beginning of Sept.1996. My dad loves golf and
mom loves to shop. I'm looking for a nice resort with good golf, nearby
shopping and some nightlife. Thank you for any ideas you can offer. I have been going to HHI for five years. Three years ago I purchased a
time share through Marriott and just love it. The accomodations are always
spacious and clean. Some of my favorite restaurants are the Chart House
(they have a great buffet), and for less formal, you can't beat the
Salty Dog out at South Beach. My family continues to go to HHI every
year in June and we love it. We visited Hilton Head last (1995) and loved it. We plan to return in
July, 1996 and will stay again at the Shipyard. One of our pleasures was
riding bikes everywhere. Be sure to rent them ahead for the week.
Restaurants we liked were the Wild Wing (very casual & laid back) - very
good wings & salads; Crazy Crab was excellent; Fuddruckers had great
hamburgers (our teens enjoyed it). Does anyone know anything about the
Savannah Trip by ferry? We would like to try it this year. Thanks, The
Schmidts. My husband & I and 5-6 teenagers (ages 14-18) will be in Hilton Head in
Aug. We've never been there before & would like to know of things to do
for adults & teens and affordable places to eat. Email me if you'd like.
We're staying in Sea Pines at Ocean Villas. Thanks! My parents are golfers and for their 50th anniversary we are thinking
of sending them to HHI. How do we get info about this great place? I have
heard nothing but great things about the place. Let me hear from other
travelers. thanks Lynne - (miracle@fta.com) When visiting HHI with my wife, we had an absolutely exquisite dinner
at La Maisonette restaurant on Pope Avenue. La Maisonette was
charming and romantic. We rang a door bell to enter and were greeted by
the owner/maitre d'. Overall, the food and service were excellent. We have
already made our anniversary dinner reservations for this July. I strongly
recommend La Maisonette for a romantic, elegant, and fun dining
experience. I have never been to Hilton Head Island before, but will be attending a
seminar during mid May 1996. I will be staying at the Hilton Resort.
Should I stay elsewhere, or is this place suitable. Any other general
suggestions would be appreciated. My family and I have been vacationing at Hilton Head every summer since
I was a little girl. We enjoyed staying at the Marriott for many years in
Shipyard Plantation, but it has changed over to the Crystal Sands within
the last few years. I still think it is the most beautiful stretch of
beach on the island. Some of our favorite restaurants include: The Crazy
Crab at Harbour Town, The Old Fort Pub on Hilton Head Plantation,
Alexander's on Palmetto Dunes (a great deal if you catch the early bird
special from 5-6) and last of all Hudson's. Another family tradition of
ours is the 4th of July at Harbour Town. It is a perfect setting for the
fireworks and Greg Russell is sure to entertain kids of all ages !!! I recently moved to Hilton Head and I love it! As a golfer, I have
found so many great courses to play and one excellent golf school--The
Golf Academy of Hilton Head at Sea Pines. I took their Four Day Golf
School which included a round of golf on Harbour Town Golf Course in Sea
Pines. The Practice facility is in Sea Pines and was beautiful. The Golf
Academy of Hilton Head at Sea Pines has got it together! My family and I are planning a vacation during the month of July or
August to Hilton Head. This will be our first trip to the island, so we
have no idea where to stay. Due to conflicting vacation schedules, we will
only be able to stay for 3-4 nights. We would like to stay in a nice,
beachfront hotel, and would like to spend under $100 per night. Any
suggestions would be appreciated. Also, please direct me in where to eat
while we are there. We spent a wonderful week in Sea Pines during March, and can't wait for
next year. Cycling is our favourite pas- time, as well as quiet walks in
the Forest Preserve. We enjoyed a marvellous dinner at Fitzgeralds
on South Forest Beach Road, but the favourite has to be the Harbourside
Cafe in Harbourtown - even with the aggressive birds! We are planning a trip to Hilton Head later this summer and we are
wondering if anyone can tell us about the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis
Resort. Thanks. April 13, 1996 Our family -- Dad, Mom, 2 little ones -- would like to go to HH in late
June for our first visit. We are looking for some recommendations on
places to stay. Any suggestions? Well, I went to Hilton Head August of 1995 and I loved it. It was the
most fun I have ever had on a vacation (even more fun than Disney World).
I loved to wake-up early and go to the beach and look for shells or just
look at the things that had washed up. Also if you go, be sure to rent
bikes because it's fun to ride on the trails. I can't wait to go back!!!
Today is April 2, 1996, and we have been back from Hilton Head for
three days. It was our first visit there and a wonderful experience. The
golf courses were beautiful and well-maintained (even though they were
quite wet) and the 'gators on the course were complacent. Our favorite
courses were Island West and Rose Hill. As for restaurants, The Oyster
Factory and Brian's are not to be missed, they were excellent! We are
definitely planning a return! Im looking for info about any fun spots/ restaurants in Hilton Head,
S.C....We'll be in HHI May 22-29 for a senior class trip and I would like
some names and ideas of fun things to do while we are there. ie,..dolphin
watches, deep sea fishing, shopping, sea food, beach activity. Thank you
RSVP por favor! Hi there! Right now I am in the Netherlands, but I still think a lot
about Hilton Head. I worked for the Corel Champions and
The Family Circle Magazine Cup as an intern. I miss my colleagues, the
incredible nice weather and the sea!!!!!!!! My favorit place to go out was
the Brewing Co. Well guys, hope to see you soon. Have fun!! Love
Linda We will be in Hilton Head in early April. Looking for best golf courses
for average golfers, best places to eat (both casual and formal). This
will be our first visit. Also, other than golf and be lazy.....what else
should we make sure that we do while there? We are learning about internet and we want some information about
tickets for the final four. Hilton Head is a great place to visit but a
better place to live. I am looking for information on self-contained accommodations on Hilton
Head Island such as condos, that are either right on the beach or within a
few yards of the beach. We are a family of 2 adults and two children of 4
and 2 years respectively. We want clean and comfortable dwellings. Since the mid 80's I have attended the
Family Circle. I have had the I have met the professional players,
received autographs, and taken photos. I have made new friends whom I meet
each year. I enjoy eating at C.J.'s and Cafe Europa. I haven't been to Hilton Head Island in eight years. I know that the
island has been built up a bit. I was interested in any information on
good Restaurants on the Island. I have read most of the emails on this Web
page. I was looking for any new or updated information that might be
available. I will be staying at the Sea Pines at the end of May. I am
looking for Restaurants with good wine lists and a large variety of Beers,
not to mention good food. You can email me at: jimdarby@neptune.midsea.com
Thank you, Jim I love Hilton Head, one reason is that my husband and I are were
married there in l993, under the Liberty Oak Tree in Harbour Town right on
Greg Russel's stage (it was November). Among the many other reasons that I
love the island is that my mother, father, and sister-in-law live there
and in June of l996, I too will be living on the beautiful island. I've
visited Hilton Head many times and it's always been so beautiful.
Wonderful weather as well. We are getting excited about the move since we
love being on the island. We have come to Hilton Head for about ten years now, and are planning
to retire there. We usually rent a condo in Shipyard and play tennis at
Shipyard Racquet Club. We are avid tennis fans and usually take in the
Family Circle Cup tournament. Our favorite places to eat include: John
Braddock's Seafood House (including The Salty Dog Cafe), Hudson's, Just
Pasta and The Old Oyster Factory. All have great food and great service!
The atmosphere on the island is the most relaxing we've ever known and we
are looking forward to doing the "snow bird thing" there when we retire
from Michigan's cold winters! We've been vacationing in HH for 14 years, staying in Captain's Cove.
Our children became so infatuated with the SE as a result of our numerous
trips, they both are students at UGA! We are Mpls. residents. There's not
much we don't like about the island, but one of our current favorite
"haunts" is happy hour at the Hyatt. We have come to know and enjoy
Phillip T. Myers, the resident pianist in the lounge. Also, the old Crazy
Crab in the Summer where the "Gator" sings every Jimmy Buffet song ever
recorded. March 1-3, 1996. This was our annual trip to the International Reading
Association convention--stayed at the Hyatt (which is beginning to show
its age). Based on a recommendation in this web site, had dinner at THE
BIG BAMBOO. The entire evening was confusing. Very small, upstairs,
decorated very inexpensively with lots of bamboo everywhere. Varied ages
of diners: children to folks even older than we! Confusing menu: hot dogs
to prime rib! Drinks served in "Mason" jars--cute, but not authentic to a
WWII Pacific island. Food was good, however, and the service was adequate.
HIGHLIGHT of the evening: live entertainment provided by MARY LOUISE AND
MINGER!!! She is a sultry vocalist, in the saloon tradition, and he is a
very accomplished pianist. Talented? You bet. Mary Louise sang Nat Cole's
"Unforgettable," and she made it her own; not Natalie's! So, bottom line:
THE BIG BAMBOO needs to step back and define itself better! Editor's Note: Ron's message was actually truncated. He has sent me a longer note which will be online soon My wife and I lived on Hilton Head for about four years, all of which I
spent teaching tennis at the Port Royal Racquet Club by the Westin hotel.
I guess I am a little biased but I think Port Royal is the nicest place to
play. If you love tennis and would like to play on grass courts, stop by
Port Royal and give it a try. If you stop by the club, say hi to Dana
Landin (a great head pro), and Denny and Tanda Bianco (Director). Tell
them I said hi. Enjoy your time on the Island, it is beautiful!! My wife and I have been visiting HHI since 1984 and plan on returning
as often as possible. What a fantastic place! We travel a great deal and
have seen many gorgeous places but without a doubt HHI ranks near the top.
I could go on forever but I'll get to the point of recommending a few
things to do and places to eat. Our favorite restaurant that we've ever
been to period is Cafe Europa in Harbor Town. You can spend more and you
can be more pretentious, but you will be hard pressed to find better food,
service, or views in North America. For the ultimate in peaceful calorie
burning (not an oxymoron) activities take a kayak tour of Pinckney Island
just behind/beside HHI, preferably at sunset as we did. And finally for
the ultimate free activity, walk along the miles of wide, flat, beautiful
beaches that HHI offers. If you do visit HHI, please take care and leave
it as you found it. We have enough Myrtle Beaches but very few HHIs. I lived on Hilton Head Island for nearly two years and found it to be
the most memorable experience of my life. I worked with the greatest group
of residents on the island and enjoyed every minute of every day. If you
ever get down to the island, try your best to get down to THE SALTY DOG
CAFE, SALTY DOG ICE CREAM SHOP, and of course the Tee-Shirt
Shop. You will find the most genuine people and they are all more than
willing to make your vacation the greatest. If you visit South Beach once
you will never want to go anywhere else on the island. It is truly a
unique little area of the island. Tell Jake and the folks at the Salty Dog
Cafe' I said Hi!! We have vacationed from New York 4 times in the last 8 years on the
Island, and have fallen in love with the place and the people. This year
we decided it's where we want to retire and have purchased a building lot
on HH plantation. Very exciting and would love to here from any people on
the plantation with builder recommendations or any other help in the
relocation process. Please send us mail........ We have held our family reunion on Hilton Head for the last three years
and are planning a fourth visit this summer, 1995 We have 14 family
members renting one big house. It's great that we can find such wonderful
accomodations every year. There's something for everyone to do..biking,
swimming, shopping, and lots of dining. Our favorite spot is the Crazy
Crab. We like the atmosphere at the HarbourTown location, but the wait is
really, really long. So we go to the one at the other end of the island
(on 278, right before the bridge to the mainland). Has anyone ever
attended the "Murder at the Mansion" mystery at the Barony clubhouse? I'd
be interested in some opinions. It's usually held on Tuesday nites. Also,
does anyone have information about transportation to the Savannah airport?
Are there any buses or limos that go there? My family and I have been visiting Hilton Head every April for the past
9 years. We absolutely love it. We are big into tennis and especially
golf. Play mostly at Shipyard and Palmetto. Favorite casual eating is
Damon's. Our kids love the beach, and yes, they're allowed on the golf
courses (even though they are only 6 and 3 respectively) Looking for a
good game of men's singles or doubles (USTA rating of 5.5) from April
7-19. Please contact me at nick_wolff@stkamer.stortek.com if you are
interested. Anyone have any good ideas for the kids other than the
beach....ie. places to entertain them during the day or early evening?
Look forward to hearing from you. would like some info about deep sea fishing at hilton head Editor's Note:
After many years living in the Far East, my family and I have gotten
pretty fussy about Chinese food. Outside of San Francisco, and Vancouver
and maybe Toronto, the Chinese restaraunts appear to employ Italian cooks.
WOW! were we suprised to find a Chinese restaurant on Hilton Head Island
That Matches the best in the East. The Imperial Dragon Restaurant
tucked into a corner of the Park Plaza Shopping Center near the Sea Pines
gate is just fantastic. Authentic-Authentic! A MENU that goes on forever,a
decor that took me back to days in Taipei and a staff that cmmunicates in
Chinese. Even Chinese music. The food was superb the service excellent and
the prices more than reasonable. Ordered Peiking Duck to provide the
ultimate test. It was real Peiking Duck! Robin the executive chef showed
me the special oven and was proud of his work. Turns out he is from
Beijing. Imperial Dragon was almost worth the trip alone. Hi again. Just would like to throw in a few more of my favorites. Most
uncrowded bike paths=the south beach to harbour town connection. Most
scenic=see above (winds through harbour town golf links). Best mexican=Aunt
Chiladas. Best Overall place to stay=Sea Pines (e-mail me for specific
recommendations). Night life for people my age (15-18)=e-mail me for what
I can really tell you, but Harbour Town and Holiday Inn are always fun and
full of people. Have we met before????=drop me a line if you know me. I've
been there every year over Easter for 18 yrs. Can't wait to go back
either!!!! Just got back from a great week on Hilton Head Island. The best place
we found for "happy hour" was at Margarettas in the shopping plaza
next to Wexford. The prices were very reasonable and Starr behind the bar
had lots of good recomendations on places to go and things to see. Managed
by Kim and Chris, its a small friendly place. Our server was Kelly, Kim's
sister. The portions were, well, large. The truth is I could not finish.
We all had a take home "swan" full of great mexican food for a future
lunch. Golfing was good for this time of year. Favorite course was a toss
up between Old South and Island West. Look forward to a return visit. We've been visiting Hilton Head since 1982 and have watched the island
grow. We own a small piece of the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
Although we have always enjoyed the seafood buffet at the Westin, this
past summer it was not as good and rather pricey. I think that we really
missed the raw oysters. However we did finally venture into Abe's Shrimp
House where the atmosphere is extremely casual and the low country buffet
authentic and real "down home good". The price is very right. We love Cafe
On my first visit to Hilton Head we discovered "The Big Bamboo Cafe" in
Coligny Plaza. We ended up spending every weekend evening there eating and
drinking. This is a great 1940's/WWII era themed restaurant. The attention
to the detail of the era includes big band music and WWII memoribilia. I
highly recommend the "War Dog" accompanied by any one of the twelve beers
on tap. If you want more information call Scott (the owner) directly at
843-686-3443. After three consecutive nights he knew us by name. I've been going to HH for the last 4 years running and absolutely love
it. Great people, great beaches, great everything. Now thats something
coming from a Brit! A place where kids and adults can have fun is the Island Putt and
Drive. The kids can have fun by the playhouse. It is a little Discovery
Zone inside. There is a driving range for adults and a putt-putt course.
It is fun and exciting The Discovery Zone also has video games. The Island
Putt and Drive is located on Folly Field Road. The phone number is
842-9990 and the hours are from 9 am to 9 pm. You'll have a great time!
Hilton Head is by far my favorite vacation spot for fun in the sun.
While there, check out the power boats and jetskis down at Harbor Town,
and stop by the Quarterdeck for a little reggae on Wednesday happy hour.
If you are looking for a romantic dinner interlude, try Harbormaster's at
Shelter Cove, or for a casual seafood experience try Scotty's at Shelter
Cove. If you're young like me, sat away from Big Rocco's for nightlife,
stick to the Brew Company, Big Dog's Cafe or Zack's. Don't forget Remy's
or Shag's for the really late night drinking fests, or really early
morning for that matter. A great casual place to go is Wild Wing Cafe,
great beer, wings, music and people. I have plenty more great tips for
those in their twenties/early thirties to do!!! I'd be happy to hear from
anyone who would like to update me, or hear some more suggestions! My family and I have been returning to Hilton Head for the past
fourteen years. We cannot seem to escape the haunting beauty of the South,
the Spanish Moss, the clunky pelicans, and the sea oats that bend to the
wind like frightened disciples. Each time we have visited, the place
becomes more and more beautiful, the storms are amazing, and green. If you
are looking for restaurant recommendations, Alexander's in Palmetto Dunes
is excellent (salmon oscar!!!) and Cafe Europa is fantastic...a gorgeous
view of the sound at sunset..... I am 20 years old and have been visiting Hilton Head for about 13
years. My family goes every spring and some Thanksgivings. I especially
like staying at Sea Pines and playing tennis. Nowhere else seems to
have friendlier tennis pros and prettier tennis. Both my sister and I love
the bike paths and we enjoy rollerblading down to South Beach for some
ice-cream at the Salty Dog Cafe. Can't wait to go this
Thanksgiving. Wow! WHAT A PLACE! I am a golfer, but there was more than just golf -->
Harbor Town, biking, and trees. Yes, trees are everywhere. I've never seen
a Taco Bell completely surrounded by trees before. I having been going to
Hilton Head the past two years with my great friends, the Gignilliats. I
hate too say too much good things about the island because it might become
too crowded. Anyways, I think I might live there when I make it on The
Tour and win enough money. Well, I'm only eighteen but I've been to Hilton Head every year of my
life!! My parents and younger siblings are there right in October even
though we usually go over Easter. This is the first time they have been in
the fall and they say that it is still as beautiful (except the azaelas
aren't in bloom). I'm sure they will be back for the two weeks surrounding
Easter and I hope that the people here at Vanderbilt in Nashville don't
mind me taking off for a few days to visit my favorite spot on earth (and
my family too I guess). Recommendations include: best golf = the new Ocean
Course at Sea Pines, best tennis (least crowded) = Van Der Meer, longest
wait for good seafood = Shuckers, best food with reservation = CQ's at
Harbour Town, best party = Heritage Week at Harbour Town, best
accomodations = anywhere near the ocean on Sea Pines, don't miss = live
Heritage and/or Family Circle. More will follow in later days. Bye. My wife and I bought a condo on the Island in 1990. We have enjoyed it
twice every year since. The Island is like a magnet, it draws you year
after year. I think that this purchase was the best we could have ever
made. It provides income rental, a summer home and a possible retirement
home when that time comes. My wife and I have fallen in love with Hilton
Head Island. One of my friends that I met in junior high school is the
news editor of one of the Islands radio stations, his name is John Ihrig.
If anyone reading this knows John tell him I said hello. i love the area and find no shortage of things to do. favorite
restaurants.... best hamburger: boathouse at salty fare marina... best
sunset: quaterdeck in harbor towne... best fine dining: stoddard room on
daufuskie island... best italian: cafe primo... most romantic spot: spring
island.... best cold beer: hilton head brewing comp.. most over rated:
haig pt.... must miss: alexander's.. best shrimp: abe's... have a great
time and email me with your favorites! thanks! From age 9-18 my family and I spent a week or two on Hilton Head
Island. It is a beautiful, fun place. I haven't been there for about 10
years but hope to take my own family there soon! I have fond memories of
searching for sand dollars, shrimping, crabbing, taking walks on the beach
and getting to watch the giant sea turtles lay their eggs. For all but one
year we stayed in Sea Pines. Dining was great there, too....Ballard's
Shrimp House, Hudson's, Hofbrahaus, etc. If anyone reads this and would
like to update me on what's still there and what's new, please e-mail me
at cjacobso@crom.jjc.cc.il.us. My husband and I were fortunate to be able to spend a week in Hilton
Head this summer. This was our first visit. We were absolutely amazed at
the beautiful, smooth, wide beaches Hilton Head offers. One evening, we
took a walk on the beach, and to our delight their happened to be a full
moon-What a sight. The moon lit up the water and the beach with a dazzling
brilliance.
