I am coming to Hilton Head July 14 and staying for a week. I am looking for possibly a shared fishing charter or if there are any small parties which could use an extra person to help with costs. Please let me know if there is anyone interested.

Dog Kennel. If you know of an excellent dog kennel on Hilton Head Island please email me at salwolfe@juno.com. We will be visiting in June and want a climate-controlled kennel, that has room in individual spaces for a dog to move around well, have access to outside and inside, where we would be allowed to visit and take the dog out for fun time during the day, and where the staff is real nice to the pets. Thank you for your help.

We visited Hilton Head last week with our 2 year old daughter and our 5
year old son. While there, we wanted to have a romantic dinner out, so we
looked into getting a sitter for a few hours. We ended up getting one
through Hilton Head Nannies (hiltonheadnannies.com). We loved her (Olivia).
She was great with the kids... they took to her instantly. I was a little
nervous leaving the children... but when she got there and I saw how they
responded to her I felt better. I called partway through dinner, and they
were watching a movie. When we got back to the condo, the children were
sleeping peacefully. The sitter said our daughter got a little whiny at
bedtime, but that she had eventually settled down.

It was great to be able to have a night out with my husband. We went to eat
at Truffles in Sea Pines. Everything was great, but you should definitely
get dessert (which is big enough for two).

My peer here at work just got back from Hilton Head and was telling me about some Key Lime hard candy that he had eaten. I am trying to find where I can get a bag or 2 for him of the candy as a surprise gift. He talks about that candy ALL the time!

Thank you so much.

Editors Note: If we knew where he bought it, it would help. The following page has various Key Lime Hard Candies and a search on Google brings up a whole lot more. http://www.keylimeshop.com/html/cookies___candies.html
Good Luck

We're going to be visiting relatives on Hilton Head Island in mid-November & would like to do some kayaking (not tours -- we'll have our own kayaks with us) while there. Could you provide any information on this? We're interested in perhaps paddling over to Daufuskie Island....also around in marsh areas, inlets, waterways behind the island, etc. Any information you can give us would be VERY MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, My question is rather simple. Some time ago I was given a beer mug from Hinchey's Chicago Bar. Since this is my son-in-law Ken's name I would like to buy some for him. He loved the one I gave him. However, I bought mine off eBay. Could you see if Hinchey's would sell me some of their mugs.
Thank you so much, Pat O'Brien

We would to experience Hilton Head this summer for our vacation. If you could help maybe with some places to stay that are around $700-850.00 per week. There are 5 of us ranging in age from 47 to 16 yrs.old. My daughter and her boyfriend are golf fanatics. The weeks we are possibly looking at are either June 11th thru 17th or July 9th thru 15th. We would love ocean front or oceanview. We love the ocean.

Can anyone give me legitimate information regarding the best way to locate reasonable rental lodging in the Sea Pines area for August 1999? I have received several vacation packets; but would welcome suggestions from those who have been there. Is it beneficial to go through an agent or a service? Or is one better off researching on their own? Serious replies and suggestions would be appreciated.

I am a single mother of two daughters- 15 and 6. We are planning to vacation on Hilton Head next summer and are looking for a 2 bedroom condo to rent. We have vacationed on Hilton Head many times and have always stayed in the Sea Pines area. Some of the places we have stayed are Lagoon Villas, Gleneagle Green, etc. This is the type of condos we are interested in. I have written to several rental agencies and they have sent me rates which seem much higher than I remember paying before. So I wondered if there were any condo owners out there who handle their own rentals (at perhaps a better rate). The things we really enjoy on the island are bicycling, beaching, swimming in a good pool, good restaurants, and exploring. Please let me know if you have anything available.

My friends and I are looking to stay in Hilton Head Island next summer, 1999. I know that this is way far in advance, but we are looking for a somewhat inexpensive place to live. There will probably be 3-4 of us, and we would not mind a 2-4 bedroom place! Please contact me with some information or a website that I can read to start our search. We are planning to simply be waitresses or something, is that also in demand in the beginning of the summer? Thanks!

My family (age 20-73)just returned from HHI. We enjoyed golf, fishing, swimming in ocean, trip to Penn Center on St Helena. We stayed in my timeshare in N. Forest Beach. Coligny Plaza was a real convenience. Enjoyed Steamers at Coligny; short walk to beach. We found everyone to be friendly. We "discovered" African American (as well as many other) families well represented at Abe's Native Shrimp House. Are there other restaurants, clubs on the island that African American families enjoy?

When (during what weeks of August/September) is the best time to visit HHI? My wife and I are planning our first visit and would prefer to visit after the peak summer season ends but when the weather is still great. Also, what areas of HHI are best for a 30ish couple w/o children. We like peace and tranquility--not "wild times!" My husband and I are planning to a trip to Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Resort with our 4 year old during the week of Memorial Day. Can anyone offer specific suggestions regarding what "not to miss" and what we may want to avoid? Also, if anyone has stayed at this property, I'd be interested in their experience. We have the opportunity to extend our stay, and are trying to decide if we want to extend at this property or another. Please reply to stpierre@honcompany.com. Thanks!

I am planning a trip to Hilton Head in April 98. I am an avid scuba diver and was wondering if there was scuba diving in the area, and even if the water temperatures would be conducive to diving at that time of year. I would appreciate any information that you could give me. Thank you. Peter Herr SeaQ1@AOL.com

Hi all! I have the chance (possibly, anyway) to visit HHI at the end of March/beginning of April. However, I could only get away for a long weekend (3, maybe 4 days) and it's a looooong drive (9 hours or so) to HHI from my house. What I'd like to know from all you HHI "regulars" (or if you've ever visited at this time of year) is would it be worth my while to go for such a short time at this time of year? Are there enough things to do (swimming is probably out unless I could find a heated pool?) in Hilton Head at that time of year to make the trip worthwhile? I love walking on the beach, etc, and I know it's fairly warm in March/April (at least compared to home!). What do you think? All suggestions would be helpful! TIA, Tracey tlovedittoe@yahoo.com

I've been to Hilton Head twice and stayed both times in the North Forest Beach area. I love the entire island and want to return anytime from September, 1998 forward. I am looking for a home or condo on or near the beach that can accomodate two adults and two PERFECTLY behaved older Golden Retrievers for up to one month. My last two vacations were wonderful but I missed my 'kids'. They are getting a little older now and have never seen the ocean. I am retired and spend all my time making sure the pups are trained and well mannered. June 7-14/97. Once again had a grand time on the Island. Took the advice of some of your Travelogue readers & tried out a few restaurants. The sandwiches at Philly's are indeed a great find. Tried both locations. Preferred New Orleans Rd atmosphere-but excellent food at either. Also tried OLD FORT PUB. Saved it till our last nite, and wish we had gone earlier in the week, so we could have spent many more outings there. Beautiful sunset, absolutely superb service, and terrific food. It didn't seem to matter whether customers were ordering from the pub menu, (munchies & lighter fare) or the full dinner menu, the staff were attentive, super friendly and very accomodating to every request. Frequented by many locals,(a good sign) with many many Chicago Bulls fans peeking in at the TV in the bar. (may have something to do with the fact that Michael & family have a home in Wexford!) We had the best time there, and after a dozen or more visits to HH in the last 6 summers , it is now our fav for that type of dining. However, we still will frequent the Wild Wing a tradition we have created since our very first visit!! Does anyone have any info on the Players Club Resort/Inn?? Can't seem to find much. Friends have a stay/play golf pkg. they are interested in using, but would like to know something about the place first. We just couldn't offer much in that regard. Appreciate any response, positive or otherwise. Hoping to get back in late August, for another week, until then looking forward to checking out Travelogue updates. Thanks. While I have tried to answer each request, it has become an awesome task so I will try to sumarize my opinions, advise and counsel at this time. While I realize it maty not be for everyone, I hope you will accept it as the "Straight Scoop" from a guy with on financial interests in answering your questions. If this doesn't work...then you can reach me at my E-mail address and I will try to help you. Thanks for your understanding... GERRY from VAIL.

The state I have to do it on is South Carolina. i have chosen to do it on Palmetto Dunes resort. what I need to know exactlly what kind of effect or what's it place on hilton head Island. I keep reading about all these places and activites beginging held on this Island that I am getting confused. If someone can make things clear for me it would be great. Another question I have is what is this Disney thing on the Island that I am reading about. Is that sepporet or part of it, or one of Dunes competters? This is were I am getting confused. If someone who knows that erea can get back to me it would be great.
-- Cherie Potocki (cpotocki@exodus.jwu.edu) submitted 4/19/1997
Editor's Note: Palmetto Dunes is a 2000 acre section of Hilton Head Island. The island is logically (& sometimes physically) separated in to sections including Sea Pines (at the toe), North and South Forest Beach (next to Sea Pines), Shipyard Plantation (next to South Forest Beach & in the 'instep'), Palmetto Dunes which is next to Shipyard (is Port Royal between these? I forget :-)) which is also in the instep, then further down are Port Royal, Palmetto Hall, Folley Field, etc. Each area I've found is distinct in activities and attractions. Sea Pines is the oldest area and is a mix of residential and resort rental properties. Palmetto Dunes is newer and is primarily resort rentals properties including 2 hotels. The Disney property is a timeshare which I believe is in Shelter Cove which is the sound side area associated with Palmetto Dunes.

I've read alot about Gregg Russell concerts and day camp-can anyone tell me more about him or where to get more information? Do we need advance reservations Gregg Russell concerts, bikes, and dinner? Help, please! My fiancee and I are looking for a place to spend our honeymoon (Aug. 3-10), and have been considering Hilton Head. I know several friends who have been there, and they all enjoy it tremendously. My question, is it suitable for honeymoon. We are looking for a nice beach to relax upon, some good restaurants, and the other extras like horseback riding, shopping, etc. Jennifer doesn't care much for golf, so I don't know if I will be able to play or not. Hello, my name is Stephen Davis and I am a student at Elon College. A small group of my freinds and I are visiting your island from April 25-27 for a small vacation away from school. Four out o fhte six of us enjoy bodyboarding and surfing. I was on the World Wide Web last night searching for information on wave heights and conditions but I was unable to find any. I did find the ordinance that states that there is no surfing or bodyboarding insid ethe designated swimming area's but that was the only information on surfing that I was able to obtain. I was wondering if you could send me any information on wave heights and conditions or any web addresses that would contain this information for Hilton Head Island. Anything that you are able to send me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. In Christ, Stephen Davis, 3936 Campus Box, Elon College, NC 27244. E-Mail: davis5m0@numen.elon.edu

We have been discussing a visit to Hilton Head this June or July. Would appreciate any information on accomodations, activities, best areas, etc. There would be two adults and two teenagers--although we've been tossing around the idea of allowing them each to bring a friend. That would depend on the type of accomodations and rates we find. We are not golfers or tennis players, so the beach would be the main attraction for us. A clean, well-kept, beachfront condo in a nice, safe area--that is still affordable--is what we're looking for. Any suggestions or input about the area would be appreciated. thanks 1/27/97

In the past four years we have vacationed at HHI and stayed at the Crowne Plaza Resort (formerly Crystal Sands), but this year we thought we would rent a villa in Evian, if possible. Could you send rental info or possible agencies to contact. We need to sleep 5. We have come down the last to March breaks, and the two summers prior. In March we found other than golf and tennis, you could not veg in the pool or the ocean. Weather was great (60s and low 70s) but not as nice as being in the hot summer time. More action and people and activities to do in the warm months. Also at the Crowne Plaze (which is a fabulous hotel) we found in March a lot of business conventions there and they took over the hotel more or less. Otherwise, a great holiday spot for young and old. My son roller blades and bikes all day long and my self and my daughter find plenty of shopping. The Southern hospitality is great. My husband got a hole-in-one in Shipyard's course and that was a bonus on last year's holiday. Golfing is expensive especially if you want to take a teenager with you. Las Vegas Golf & Tennis is a great place for golf and tennis bargains, and so is Players World. Guiseppe's great for salad and pizza. Up here in Toronto we look forward to a friendly visit to HHI in the very near future. It is only a short 17 hours drive down and it is such a beautiful drive. Any rental information would be appreciated. Thanks.

We have come to HHI two summers in a row, and then two March breaks in a row. We find the summers more enjoyable because of the longer days, and the fact that you can enjoy the pool and ocean. This year we may come in May. We have stayed always at the Crown Plaza Resort, which is fabulous, but this time we may try a condo rental in Shipyard. Any suggestions on the best rental (I need 2 or 3 bedrooms, and a deal on golfing)? HHI is great. We used to go to Naples every year, but HHI is so friendly and southern that we have enjoyed it more. We're from Toronto. I enjoy reading everyone's comments and I like the HHI expert also.

Editor's Note: One of my favorite areas to stay on Hilton Head is South Forest Beach. It's a great location and since the area is not in a gated community, the rentals are quite reasonable. A word of caution though - be sure to ask any rental agent the EXACT conditions of the condo. Many of the South Forest Beach villas/condos were built several years ago and not all of the owners have updated their properties.

We have never been to Hilton Head before. We are contemplating going over Christmas week and staying at the new Disney resort there. We would prefer to be going to Walt Disney World to stay at the Vacation Club, where we have stayed many times before, and like very much, but for one quarter the cost and one day's less driving (We drive from Canada), we can have the same accommodation at Hilton Head. So, my question is, has anyone ever stayed at the Hilton Head Disney resort and, if so, how did they like it? I have found no mention of it anywhere in any of the Hilton Head internet information. My further question is, would it be dreary and depressing to be at Hilton Head at that time of year and should we not persevere with the extra day's driving to get to Florida?

Editor's Note: Hilton Head Island tends to get a bit hot and muggy in the middle of summer. Perfect beach weather! April is a very nice time as well with daytime highs in the upper 70's (farenheit). The water temperature which a little chilly for me is in the upper 60's - and I've seen many in the water at that time of year. Anyone else with thoughts on April vs. June travel to HHI?

My family (2 children) and another family (4 children) are visiting HHI the week of Aug 3 - Aug 7. We are travelling from Central New Jersey, we were wondering if anyone know's approximately how long (hours/miles) it is to HHI? - Thanks in advance
-- Rob Owens (rc_owens@msn.com) submitted 7/16/1996
Editor's Note: From the metro Washington, DC area, it takes about 9 hours to get to Hilton Head Island. 8.5 hours is you're moving and make only one brief stop :-). I believe the distance is something like 600 miles. So...... anyone else like to pass on what the approximate miles/hours from the central NJ area to Hilton Head?

I've been reading the responses of the people who have been to the island, but I have not seen anyone mention the Radisson Suites Hotel. Is this a bad sign? I'm going to be staying at there in August. Can anyone give me some feedback on how nice a hotel the Radisson is or isn't? Service, Food, Accomodations, etc.

We were evacuated from the island last week in the middle of our vacation? Just wondering if there was any damage sustained on the island. We go every other year so we'll be back in '98.

My husband and I have a 7-day vacation planned to Hilton Head beginning on March 16, 1997. We have never been there but we had heard wonderful things. I am wondering what the weather is like there at that time of the year and what kind of clothes to take (I'd like to take advantage of the late summer sales if shorts light cotton pants are appropriate.) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We are planning a trip to HH for 2 weeks in Sept. (7 to 21) and are looking for a place to stay. We have small kids so a pool, beach and kitchen are important. Heard that South Beach is nice, how about Palmetto Dunes? Thanks
-- Tom Bartecki (RYANNICOLE@AOL.COM) submitted 7/7/96
Editor's Note: Personally, I like both the South Forest Beach area as well as Palmetto Dunes. One of the nice features of Palmetto Dunes is that it is so well self-contained. They have 5 golf courses, 25 tennis courts, 2 hotels with pools, hundreds of homes/villas, large beachfront, restaurants, planned activities within the community, and the list goes on. I'd love to hear as well what others think of the Palmetto Dunes area.

Please!!! I am interested in obtaining information regarding the purchase of properties(condos primarily) as investments. I would welcome any information from anyone with first hand knowledge of profitability, steps to follow, things to be aware of etc. No real estate agents, please! Thank you- Dave at DCOLEMA1.IX.NETCOM.COM

Editor's Note: Hilton Head Island is a great place to get away. I'd recommend a nice dinner at Cafe Europa (on the water at Harbor Town). Or perhaps a dinner cruise? Be sure to stop at the Visitor's Welcome Center on the way in to pick up brochures and a current calendar of planned events.

WE HAVE 4 ADULTS AND 4 CHILDREN AND WILL BE IN HHH FROM AUG 3 TO THE 10 WE NEED A NICE PLACE TO STAY WITH A POOL AND CLOSE TO THE BEACH PLEASE HELP US OUT. EMAIL ROOSTER@THOMSON.NET

My fiance and I are looking to get married at Hilton Head next April of 1997. I have been going to Hilton Head since I was a little girl and it truly holds a special place in my heart. We are wanting a small, intimate wedding, preferably outside, for only 80 people. We have looked at a couple of places but haven't found the "right one." Any suggestions?
-- Natalie Reinbold (funb.media@internetMCI.com) submitted 5/22/96

We just returned from HHI having rented a house in Sea Pines Plantation from May 4-18. We had absolutely perfect weather the entire time! We have vacationed there for most all of the past 20 years and are interested in buying a retirement home on the Island. What is the job market like for an upper-level executive? Where are the best areas to live? How is the real estate market? We would appreciate hearing from Island residents, especially those who are transplants. Thanks!

We're planning to send my parents to Hilton Head Island for their 50th wedding anniversary at the beginning of Sept.1996. My dad loves golf and mom loves to shop. I'm looking for a nice resort with good golf, nearby shopping and some nightlife. Thank you for any ideas you can offer.
-- Pat Ackroyd (ackroyd@worldnet.att.com) submitted 5/17/96
Editor's Note: Hilton Head Island is a perfect spot for golf, shopping, and nightlife. You might want to look at Palmetto Dunes which is about mid-island. They have 5 nice courses and several different types of accommodations. Also, there is a hotel in Shipyard which is conveniently located. Any other suggestions out there?

We visited Hilton Head last (1995) and loved it. We plan to return in July, 1996 and will stay again at the Shipyard. One of our pleasures was riding bikes everywhere. Be sure to rent them ahead for the week. Restaurants we liked were the Wild Wing (very casual & laid back) - very good wings & salads; Crazy Crab was excellent; Fuddruckers had great hamburgers (our teens enjoyed it). Does anyone know anything about the Savannah Trip by ferry? We would like to try it this year. Thanks, The Schmidts.

I have never been to Hilton Head Island before, but will be attending a seminar during mid May 1996. I will be staying at the Hilton Resort. Should I stay elsewhere, or is this place suitable. Any other general suggestions would be appreciated.

My family and I are planning a vacation during the month of July or August to Hilton Head. This will be our first trip to the island, so we have no idea where to stay. Due to conflicting vacation schedules, we will only be able to stay for 3-4 nights. We would like to stay in a nice, beachfront hotel, and would like to spend under $100 per night. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, please direct me in where to eat while we are there.

I haven't been to Hilton Head Island in eight years. I know that the island has been built up a bit. I was interested in any information on good Restaurants on the Island. I have read most of the emails on this Web page. I was looking for any new or updated information that might be available. I will be staying at the Sea Pines at the end of May. I am looking for Restaurants with good wine lists and a large variety of Beers, not to mention good food. You can email me at: jimdarby@neptune.midsea.com Thank you, Jim

We have vacationed from New York 4 times in the last 8 years on the Island, and have fallen in love with the place and the people. This year we decided it's where we want to retire and have purchased a building lot on HH plantation. Very exciting and would love to here from any people on the plantation with builder recommendations or any other help in the relocation process. Please send us mail........

would like some info about deep sea fishing at hilton head
thanks -- Gene (geneb@vm.cc.latech.edu)

Editor's Note:

I'll have to defer to the others on the net and hope they have an answer. What I have been able to discover is that there are several companies which offer charter services for near-shore to deep sea fihsing. You might want to look into the following boats:

Boomerang, 843-671-3060. Sportfishing aboard this 32' boat.
Drifter, 843-671-3060. Deep sea fishing.
Fishin' Addition, 843-785-9177. Inshore and nearshore fishing for cobia, trout, redfish, tarpon, sharks, and king mackerel.
Palmetto Bay Marina, 843-785-7131. Inshore, offshore & Gulfstream.
