Historical & Environmental Sights

Audobon Hewhall Preserve - A self-guided brochure will allow you to enjoy trails where native plants are labeled. Free. Located on Palmetto Bay Road. Open to the public Sunday to Sunday Daily. 843-671-1050.

Sea Pines Forest Preserve - Sea Pines Plantation. You will find 7 miles of trail, a fishing pond, Waterfowl Pond & Indian Shell Ring. This is a self-guided brochure; guided nature walks on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.(Meet at East Entrance on Lawton road.)

Zion Cemetery and Bayard Mausoleum - Built in 1846, it is the largest ante-bellum structure still intact on the Island. Intersection of US 278 and Mathews Drive.

Baynard Ruins - Sea Pines Plantation. Take a self-guided tour of the remains of an 1800 plantation house and its outbuildings. The plantation house was constructed from tabby, a popular homemade Lowcountry building material that is produced by burning oyster shells and mixing with whole shells, sand and water.

Fish Haul Plantation - Off Beach City Road. The chimneys are the only reminders to this once thriving Sea Island cotton plantation. Federal troops once camped here from the time of the Union occupation in 1861.

Fort Howell - Beach City Road. The Union troops built this earthwork in 1861 to strengthen the defense of Mitchelville.

Fort Mitchel - Hilton Head Plantation. An earthwork fortification built constructed around 1862, as part of the Island's defense system.

Indian Shell Ring - Sea Pines Forest Preserve. The native Americans once occupied Hilton Head and left their history in large rings and shell middens.

Green's Shell Enclosure Walk - Learn while exploring the structure constructed over 500 years ago. This walk is sponsored by the Museum of Hilton Head. Call 843-689-6767 for more details.

Fort Sherman/Fort Walker Ruins Walk - Explore the remains of Civil War fortifications located on Port Royal Plantation Sponsored by Museum of Hilton Head. Call 843--689-6767

Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge Walk - Explore the pristine wildlife preserve with your tour guide. Expect to see and learn about various Lowcountry flora and fauna. Sponsored by the Museum of Hilton Head. Call 843-689-6767

Museums

The Museum of Hilton Head - The museum has archaeological digs and has gathered a collection of more than 75,000 artifacts relating to the Island's history and culture. Nature walks around the Island, loggerhead turtle watch protection program, lectures and an oral history project are among its many offerings. 843-689-6767. 100 William Hilton Parkway.

Dolphin Watch Nature Cruise - Meet Hilton Head's fascinating Sea Creatures on these explorations. The cruises are offered by several companies in area and operate throughout the day in addition to sunset cruises.

Horse Back Riding - The Island is host to several stables that will provide scenic guided trail rides. Riding lessons and pony rides are also available.

Fishing And Shrimping - Several companies will host boat expeditions teaching visitors how to catch shrimp, crab, and fish. What a great way to enjoy the catch of the day!

Kayaking - Guided Kayak Tour companies in Hilton Head will challenge you to paddle through marshes, creeks, rivers, and sounds that are not available to most vacationers.

Sailing - Hilton Head Sailing Center. Full-time Sailing schools offer on the water instruction for sailors of all levels. Women instructors are also available. All instructors are US Sailing Certified professional Call 843-671-2727

Parasailing - Get a birds eye view of Hilton Head Island by parasailing and viewing 25 miles of the Island.
