I moved here from Upstate NY last year. I love Brevard County. I
live in Rockledge which is about 20 minutes north of Melbourne.
There are homes in all income brackets. Viera is a new "city" or
planned community. The houses range from $185,000 up. There are
many older homes built from the 1960's forward. They run from
50,00 up. It depends on what location you want, how handy you
are, etc. There are many deed restricted housing developments
where you have to pay homeowner association dues. There are
regulations to follow to live there. The advantage is that homes
are well kept up and there aren't junk cars around, etc. Palm
Bay is south of Melbourne by 10 miles or less. They have cheaper
houses. Many are brand new. The housing market is good for
buying now- not good for sellers. Watch out for homeowners
insurance costs and property taxes. They are outrageous.
Anywhere near the water or in a flood zone is impossible to get
insurance on after the hurricanes.
That being said, I love it here. I can be at the beach in 20
minutes. There are two rivers in Melbourne so there are a lot of
water sports. There are many diverse types of wildlife and
plants and birds to watch.
Wages are a little less here than NY unless you work in the
Space Industry or at Harris. But there is no state tax and
utilities are lower.
I don't know about schools really. There are many and some
private as well as church based.
Good luck!

We are traveling around FL right now and have been talking to
people in the Melbourne area and they are telling us that this
area has many places to rent. We are interested in renting for
possibly a month or longer for next year. Can you help me
getting in contact with some one as what is available and what
the cost would be. Also are these places furnished or not.

The Hamptons Apartment community is definiteley the only place
to live. Situated between the Indian River and the Atlantic
ocean. Theres beach access and a boat dock and if you live at
The Hamptons, you get to dock your boat for FREE! The apartments
homes are the largest in town...over 1,200 - 1,540 sqft.
Starting from $835 and up...you can't live by the ocean anywhere
anymore and pay what they are asking. I lived there for a few
years and will get back one day. All you need to do
is bring your beach towel or fishing pole or both!

Had a wonderful time in Melbourne! Of course my previous trips
to Florida were centered around the 'touristy' things to do like
DisneyWorld. The Brevard County area is different. There's so
much to see and do. Beach for the sun-worshippers, nature
preserves for the naturalist, lots of golf courses, and much
more. My favorite spot though was Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge
- I'd heard so much about the park and it was worth the trip.
