| Been to M.B. 7x in the
last 4 years both with my non golfer wife and with 3 other
friends. We have gone either in April or November. We are
planing our 3rd annual golf trip for this Nov. What has been
clearly the case that the fairways and greens have been in
excellent shape in April but have been in less than top shape by
Nov. We generally stay at Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort and
play their courses which are very nice. Played Caledonia 2 years
ago Nov and it was in excellent shape but we hit it on a
freezing windy day and really couldn't appreciate it. Played
Tradition when it was first opened and the grass hadn't grown
in. Will probably play it this trip. I have played Tidewater
several times, nice course, good shape this past April but
really don't know why its rated #1. I enjoyed playing it but
$100.?? Played Blackmoor, liked it, a little easier than some.
My higher handicap friends liked Seagull. Wasn't in the best of
shape last Nov. We are thinking of pickin! g up Heritage or
Pawleys Plantat ion this trip. Does any body have some very
current experiences. What courses are in good shape now (Fall
1998). By the way if your at M.B. don't miss the Legends in
Concert show. September 1998 -- Paul Shoobe (110655.3302@compuserve.com) submitted 9/10/1998 My wife and I have been going to for the past 7 years and
have never had a bad experience. We have stayed at the Breakers
or one of the Sands hotels. Best course by far is Caladonia.
Other choices are Oyster Bay, Moreland, The Dunes, and Tidewater.
My wife's fav is Blackmoor. For a great place to eat try Sam
Sneads. Best ribs in town and a oak grilled grouper that is
tops. Group of eight men travel to MB every year in March for seven
years. Our favorite residence is Leitchfield because they can
accomodate all eight in one 4 bedroom condo with a large kitchen
(like we use it) and a hugh TV room. Beacause we stay south we
normaly play Caledonia & Blackmoor on Day 1; A pair of courses
in the center of MB and one course in the north. We try new
courses every year and are seldom disappointed. Two years ago we
went to Man O' War and found they double-booked the tee times.
We could not make our second tee time. Any new suggestions are
appreciated. We understand that MB National is a must play. What
else? 3DJust got back from M.B. Eight glorious days of sun, beach,
food= , and golf. Stayed at the Landmark Resorts. Nice room,
plenty of water attractions (numerous indoor and outdoor pools
and lazy rivers), but the place is HUGE. Always had to wait at
least five minutes for the elevators (we were on the 14th
floor). A car is a must. No matter where you want to go... it's
a drive from whereever you are. If you're renting a car by the
mile you'll get killed. Plenty of food places. Our favorites
were NASCAR and HOOTERS. The food was large portions and great
quality. Also the atmosphere was fantastic. Judge carefully the
seafood buffets. Thereare tons. We tried STEERS and was greatly
disapionted. =20 Golf courses played were Racoon Run (run down,
fairways and greens were beat up, muni courses in NJ are in
better shape but it's the best priced deal in town) Gator HJole
( beautiful course GREEN GRASS everywhere, very scenic but the
staff was not friendly) ?Possom Trot ( nice course, varying
holes, great shape, friendly staff)=20 We just got back from our seventh annual vacation to Myrtle
Beach. This year there was a group of eighteen of us ( husbands,
wives and kids) and we all stayed at the OCEAN CREEK RESORT.
What a place ! The rooms were great (we stayed in the south
tower) and the view was fantastic. One of the rooms( 6th fl)
even had a outdoor deck the size of both the dinning room and
kitchen put together. The pool area's were clean and the lunches
at the outdoor beach club were tasty and reasonably priced. One
real nice feature is that Barefoot Landing is right across the
road so we had easy access to restaurants and shopping. The
grounds were very clean and well kept . Another nice feature is
the towers are so far back from the road that your not bothered
by road traffic noise. While we were there we played Belle Tere,
River Hills, LongBay and The Pearl. I would recommend all of the
courses with the exception of Belle Tere. It was WAY over priced
for a course that is nothing spectacular. LongBay was tough
(greens like glass) . The Pearl was my fav. We're all looking
forward to heading back next May. Just got back from golf trip. We played premium courses and were treated to some outstanding golf. Following is our debrief of each course that might be helpful to those golfers trying to decide what courses to play: Golfers in my group shoot between 85 and 100 from the white tees. Course rankings(ranked by my group, however, Glen Dornach at number 10 is probably better than 80 courses at MB): These are all top notch courses in my opinion. 1. Caledonia--- Most beautiful course ever played?take your
camera!!!!! Challenging but inspiring. Makes you use all clubs
in your bag. Fish stew was not as good as advertised. Expensive,
but worth it! Was in MB the month of March 1998. Weather was so so but had
a great time except for a bad experience at True Blue golf
course. For 104.00 I expected a golf course that was completed.
Not temp Tee as on no 6 or rent a johns or a hole (no 2) where
the cup liner came out of the hole or no4 that had a green as
bad as i have ever seen . I could go on about the course
condition but it was the people that run it that really turned
me off!!! We were told that the reason we were a hour and a half
late getting started was because of the frost and they had 80
yes 80 bad golfers in the morning. We did not get to complete
our round as I guess all the rangers went home after everyone
started in the PM. And we play a round in 4 hr. or less! True
Blue you will never see our group again or will I ever tell
anyone to go there. Bye Bye Brunobee@ aol.comr I was told that their is a company or two that sell Tee times
that are not taken at various courses at a discount. Much like
Broadway plays. If anyone knows the name or number please post
it. Three guys from Scotland are visiting MB for the fifth itme
in late April early May for 11 rounds of golf. We have never
played the same course twice, and we have never been
dissappointed yet. Maybe somebody going solo would like to make
up a fourball. I've read through all the posted comments and failed to see
anything about vacation condos. My husband and I own property on
Shore Drive, at Pelican's Watch and Pelican's Landing. Shore
Drive is on the north end of Myrtle Beach, almost in North
Myrtle Beach. For those familiar with the Area, these two units
are between Ocean Annie's beachfront club, and the Radisson
Kingston Plantation. For those of you unhappy with your
accomodations, a three-bedroom condo is very reasonable,
especially in off-season (Sept to May). We happen to rent
through Chicora Beach Holiday, but there are other companies
that represent these properties. My family loves the beach! Our
favorite restaurants are Rossi's, Bovine's in Murrell's Inlet,
and believe it or not, the Nascar Cafe. Myrtle Waves on Bypass
17 is great. Broadway at the Beach is everything they advertise.
We visited the aquarium and thought it was great. Outlet Mall on
501 is also great. We also like to rent a pontoon and cruise up
the waterway to Bird Island. We have golfed MB National, Wild
Wing, the Grandaddy, Waterway Hills, Arcadian Shores to name a
few... the more expensive the course, the better shape they are
in. You will find golf specials, and if you decide on a
less-expensive course, it is typically not as nice. We are a group of first timers to MB. Hoping to have the golf
week of a lifetime. We have a wide range of handicaps 7-24. Any
suggestions on courses that we must play? 2-18-98 Just returned from the MB area. Spent 4 great days in
the area and the weather held up. Had planned on 5 rounds of
golf, but could only get in 4 due too a storm late in the day. I
would like to comment on the courses we played. The Mooreland at
the Legends resort. what a lay out! Very interesting, very
undulating with a use of every club in your bag. Just loved the
live bagpipe playing near the club house. Treated very
courtiously and would recommend play here anyday of the week. I
did find, however , the only thing about the course was that the
greens were abit beaten w/ sand in places, made putts slow.
Overall in good shape dispite the weather the South has had this
winter. We then played Heather Glen and Glen Dornoch. Both
beautiful places to play and the course were in good shape w/
Heather Glen more wet that Glen Dornoch. What we liked was the
close proximity the two course have w/ each other especially if
you plan on playing 2 courses in a day. Not to mention 2 of
South! CArolina's very best to offer in this area. We finally
played Caladonia. WOW!!!! Short but you really don't notice this
much because of the challanging layout. In great shape and we
were treated well by the staff too. I can't wait to try other's
in the Grand Strand area in year's to come.I would also we ate a
restaurant named Flo's Place in Murrell's inslet. Great seafood
and raw bar w/ that off the beaten path atmosphere! Wife and I just returned from our 5th trip in 2+ years. These
are a few of our faves..... I am planning to visit Myrtle Beach for a few days in late
April as part of a weeklong Carolinas trip with my 16 year old
son. We would like to golf one or two days, but we're both
beginners - I've golfed maybe three or four times in the last 30
years, my son has never golfed 18 holes, but has used a driving
range and putting green. Any suggestions on where we might try
that would be tolerant to players such as ourselves. We would
appreciate any tips especially from similar 'non-golfers' who
have golfed at Myrtle Beach. Thanks. Be sure not to miss the newest and coolest miniature golf
facility in North Myrtle Beach! It's called Mayday Golf and is
on Highway 17 North. You can't miss it if you look for the big
yellow airplane that is crashed right in the middle of one
course. The other course features a waterfall that cascades
every couple of minutes. The theme is tropical and the music is
hip-wiggling Carribean! It sure beats the other ones we've
played! We have a group going to myrtle in March we are playing the
following courses. If you have played recently let me know how
you liked them. thanks . ANGEL TRACE, TIDEWATER, LONG BAY,
HEATHER GLEN, BUCK CREEK, SURF CLUB TAKE IT FROM A GUY WHO LIVES HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the
weather is very unpredictable. it could be 30 or it could be 60.
it could rain but you never know. if you want CLEAN, INEXPENSIVE
LODGINGS that are CENTRALLY LOCATED look no further. stay at THE
CALYPSO MOTOR INN. rooms are very clean. they are remodeling one
of the three bldgs. right now. rooms are the cheapest in town.
they are located right in the center of myrtle beach and
anywhere you go from there is easy to get to. the staff if
friendly and helpful. maid service is great. laundry facilities.
well lit parking right outside the front door. it is 1 block
back from the beach which means you can see the beach but it
takes you 2 min. to walk across ocean blvd. and be on the beach.
hardly a sacrifice this time of year. CALL (843) 448-5266 ext.
100 My wife and I just got back yesterday and had a great time.
The Heritage was the best course I've ever played--incredible
greens. Oyster Bay had a great layout-real challenging with
beautiful holes. Blackmoor was my wife's favorite--good
condition and not too intimidating for women, yet fun to play
for men. We were paired with some of the nicest people too.
Carolina Roadhouse had great salad and prime rib.Las Vegas Golf
and Martins had the best deals, Golf dimensions was most
expensive. Stayed at the Caravelle--excellent place, we're going
back there next year. Can hardly wait! Best course on the strand is gator hole. Tough Tough course
nice people and friendly servants. Best rest. is noonies east.
Best goos goos on the easr coast. We played all 3 Baytree courses in March '97. All of the
greens were ruined from someone applying roundup in the
fertilizer. Has anyone on the Net played these courses since
then and what are the conditions of the greens now? Just returned from a week in M.B. Stayed at Coral Beach
Resort - very satisfied, especially enjoyed oceanfront bar,
grill and d.j. Loved Broadway at the Beach. Fireworks on Tuesday
nights - spectacular. Husband and son golfed M.B. National,
(King's North), Arrowhead, Wacashaw (sp?) and Oyster Bay - they
enjoyed all of them. Restaurants - Carolina Roadhouse - great,
Dick's Last Resort - very entertaining. We really enjoyed
ourselves and plan to return next year! Email me for any tips.
Pins 718@aol.com We are leaving for Myrtle Beach in 6 days and will be staying
at the Sand Dunes for 7 nights. This will be my 12th ? time
going down and I am as excited about going this time as I was
the first time I went. We plan on visiting Broadway at the Beach
, the water slides, the go-kart park and eating out every night.
Sand Dunes offers free summer golf and my dad, husband and
oldest son will be going out every day. I plan on sitting on the
beach all day or by the pool. Maybe we'll take a day trip to
Charleston also. We plan on going to Texans for dinner one night
and possibly Dixie Stampede. The Sand Dunes has a kids program
that I plan to encourage them to participate in at least 1 or 2
days and we''ll be sharing a 2br oceanfront suite with the
grandparents. Can't wait, We'll be there soon. The Webbers
golfwebb@aol.com submitted 8-13-97 Been golfing Myrtle Beach in late March early April last 6
yrs(weather's been perfect always)Last trip we played Man-o-
War,Witch, Willbrook,Wizard,Sea Trail(Jones)& Oyster Bay. All
these courses were awsome. If anybody out there knows of courses
that challanges the beauty of the above courses, let me
know.Because we come from the land of ice & snow, we like the
golf in the before-mention timeframe (expensive) & combined with
a weak Canadian$, our group of 8 are always on the hunt for a
more reasonable package though last trip we thougt we did ok by
the Grand Strand Motel. Also, last trip we were there during the
Good Friday holiday .Wow! We had a good time! I have been to Myrtle Beach and played golf every year from
1982 to 1992, I am going back this year after having moved to
the southwest. I will always play THE HERITAGE when I go to MB.
It has proven to be a treasure. The thing I like the best about
that course: It lets you take as much risk at you want to
attempt. High hcp'ers have a bail out spot and low hcp'ers can
go for the tough shot. It is my ONLY must play course. BKSMITH
We just came back from Myrtle Beach (June 1-6). First time
for us - husband and teenage son golfed 36 holes each day. They
played everything from Gator Hole to Traditions. They enjoyed
them all. Moorland was their #1 spot. Make sure you golf that
course. We stayed at the Sands Beach Club - a great all-suite
resort - nice rooms and amenities. We ate at several places -
River City Cafe, Longhorn Steak House, Gabby's Steak House
(wonderful margaritas), Dick's Last Resort - no complaints on
any of them. The weather could have cooperated more. My daughter
and I were planning on walking and enjoying the beach. Not so.
Maybe next year. We do plan on going back. Till then. I am traveling to MB with my family during the month of June.
I have been told that there are "Family Golf Tournaments" daily
through out the summer. These events use the callaway handicap
system so golfers of all skill levels can compete. Does anyone
know how I could find more information about these tournaments?
Thanks for the help! Please e-mail me at: Rickwescott@worldnet.att.net.
I just returned from Myrtle Beach last week (May3-10/97) We
stayed at Myrtle Beach Resort in south Myrtle Beach - almost
Surfside Beach. We rented 2bedroom condo privately - it was nice
- the outdoor pools were not heated and with the wind from the
ocean it was too cold - not very many people were swimming
outdoors. The indoor pool was like a bath! We were looking
forward to going to the Ripleys Aquarium with our little guy but
it wasn't open yet. I believe they said May 23. The shopping was
OK - we always go to TJ Maxx and the malls. The outlet mall was
dead - there are alot of empty stores - didn't find as many
deals as usual. We stayed two years ago at the Plantation Resort
on the 2 Deer Track golf courses - it was more expensive but
worth it - washer and dryer in unit, backed onto 18th hole, sun
on balcony all day, bigger unit, and indoor pool and fitness
centre. They are building a new outdoor pool - we drove in, its
not finished yet - but should be soon. It's great for golfers -
$25 a round includes cart (its an ok course), and they don't
need the car - so we can shop! We did most of our shopping at
the Wal-Mart plaza - had two good clothing stores and a shoe
store, Wal-mart has a huge grocery store in it, and whole store
is open 24 hours. Looking forward to going back next year. We
used to go to Florida for years, now MB is our choice - closer
and cheaper! Well, we just got back from MB, and although the weather was
not as nice as we had hoped, we still managed to get our 6
rounds in...just wanted to give my thoughts on the courses. weather was in the mid 70's for all 4 days. We played
arrowhead which was in great shape, Blackmoor which we loved,
the Witch was disappointing because the tee boxes on the back 9
were in really poor condition as were some of the greens. The
back nine was great and almost made up for the front nine. On
the last day we played the Heritage which is a must play for all
golfers. The Watersedge Hotel was great as usual. We found an
awesome Mexican resturant on 17 bypass call Fiesta De Burro
Loco. The food was hot and spicey and the servings were large.
Will be heading down to M.B. in the late summer with four
buddies. Planning on playing these courses: Top 5 courses in Myrtle Beach: 3/25 I've been going to the beach for 6 years and love it..
My top 5 courses: We loved MB so much we're planning our trip back this May.
Last May we played Pawley's (twice), Heritage, Wild Wing, and
Moorland. Each had it's own special touch -- traps at Moorland
are like fish -- they have lips. We avoided Crooked Stick; it
didn't look the least inviting. As for food, the mainstream
restaurants are so-so; try Yum-Yum's (spelling ?) just south of
Pawley's Plantation on the east side if you aren't afraid of
sitting on picnic benches and licking your fingers. I have a group of eight guys going to Myrtle Beach for the
first time. Average handicap in group is a 9 with lowest being a
6 and highest being an 11. Any recommendations for challenging
and scenic courses as well as accomodations. Plan on playing 4
days of golf at as many different courses as possible. Respond
to Brian L. at Familyattny@aol.com or BSLJustice@aol.com Just returned from a golf vacation in MB (3/3 - 3/6/97).
Weather was great (mid 70's to low 80's) with all sunshine and
no rain. Stayed at a condo associated with the Carribbean
Resort. We played Heron Point, Waterway Hills (27 hole course)
and Eagle Nest. Waterway Hills was the best of the three (Nice
fairways and excellent greens plus many bunkers for those who
like the beach), however Eagle Nest was challenging. Recommend
checking into replays for the courses you play and schedule them
with your tee times. You only have to pay the cart fee and you
could save some bucks and still o.d. on golf. Good places to eat
are Capt. Benjamin's Calabash, Damon's Ribs, New York Prime (on
28th Ave.), Cagney's, Rossi's (Italian), and you can't forget
Hooter's. We decided to fly and used Myrtle Beach Express (1 1/2
hour filght from Newark - Landed at 11:00 a.m. and our tee time
was 1:00 p.m.). Air fair was cheap ($165.00 round trip - 4th
person flies free - they divide the other three rates amongst
the foursome). Coming to MB in April, would appreciate comments on the
Breakers resort. Also playing the following courses any comments
welcome: Glen Dornoch, Tideater, The Dunes, Parkland, Caledonia,
Wicked Stick. I am a student at NC State Univ. I have live in NC all my
life and have played alot of the Grand Strands courses. The best
course I have ever played there is The Gauntlet at St. James
Plantation. They are opening a new 18 hole layout too. But
Lockwood is usually good except for last year, when their greens
burnt up, but the res of the course was good. 28/02/97 Yey, fellow golfers! I just want to say that I have
been to MB once last March Break and it was amazing. I felt like
a little kid at a candy store with the vast selection of golf
courses. A few buddies and myself stayed at the Carolina Winds
Condos; it was paradise. However, the best part of our stay was
the golf. The course we played most often was River Oaks.It was
a great but challenging course. It's perfect for the imaginative
shotmaker. I just wanted to reccomend the River Oaks to all the
golfers heading to MB. Have fun and be sure to try it out. I have only been to MB once and it was the greatest golf
experience I ever had. A couple of friends and myself stayed and
the Carolina Winds. It was an ocean front condo right in the
middle of MB. The course that we played most often was River
Oaks. This is a great course for imaginative shot makers. I
would suggest this course to anyone who loves a challange. Also
one of the reasons we chose River Oaks is because we got such a
great deal; if you tee off before 8:00am you get the round and a
power cart for only $20. I have lived here for a while and enjoy the golf. My favorite
course is Heather Glen. It is up on the north end and always in
good shape. They opened a new course near there called Glen
Dornoch. I haven't heard a lot about the new course. Does any
one have any info or comments on Glen Dornoch or Heather Glen?
My family is heading back to MB once again this summer! We
have previously stayed at OCEAN PARK. It has steadilly gone done
hill and I would not reccommend it. This year we are thinking
about CARAVELLE RESORT. Does anybody have any experience with
this resort? Excellent courses to golf are The Witch, Wild Wing
Avocet, and my favorite, Pawley's Plantation (I'll bet you that
you will be cursing Jack by the time you are through) This year
I am looking at Dunes, Long Bay, Tidewater, and Man o War. Any
comments or suggestions? Thanks! 2/21/97- It's that time of year again. My friends and I are
returning to Myrtle Beach this May for the fourth year. We are
planning to play King's North, Moorland at Legends, Belle Terre,
and Caledonia. We have a couple of slots open and would welcome
any suggestions . How are the courses previously mentioned? I
have not heard anything about King's North or Belle Terre. Last
year we played Oyster Bay and I felt it was over rated. How can
your signature hole have a tee area that is a sand filled mat?
Thanks for any input you can give me. BEEN TO EVERY COURSE IN MYRTLE. THERE ARE SOME GREAT ONES TO
PLAY AND THE BEST ARE: We have visited MB for the last three years during early
June. We have stayed at the Sands Beach Club and find it
reasonable and we love the location. We will be visiting again
in June and would like some input on three golf courses we are
thinking of playing. Angels Trace, Island Green and Bay Tree.
Any input will be greatly appreciated. 02-11-97 So what's the real story re: Wicked Stick? Our group
is set up for April. I'm hearing mixed messages....is it too
severe?....in bad shape? does it make a big difference what tees
we play?...how's the service? ...should we play the Witch
instead? Our low handicap is 11...our high is 24! Appreciate any
comments? I've been going down to Myrtle beach for years and I know
good golf when I see it, and the Legends Golf Courses are great.
The villas are good they have two totally different and
challenging courses nice staff and good prices. the legends are
in the middle of all the entertainment, so if you stay anywhere
for a Myrtle Beach vacation, I'd recomend the Legends my family is planning a trip to mrytle beach the first week
of April. We did not buy a hotel/golf package and wanted to know
the best courses and green fees for a first time vistor. We are
actually staying in Ocean Isle North Carolina. The big question
is price how much do the courses cost. Thanks for any help
anyone can offer. vllm@aol.com 1/97 My top picks: My brother and I, a couple of real hacks just returned from
MB (1/97). We would highly recommend playing The Witch with its
great scenery is challenging but not overly intimidating. Also
recommend Buck Creek for 27 holes that will challenge al heading to MBSC in March, and although I've been and loved
it, am bringing 3 newcomers for 5 rounds. I've selected 2 favs,
Heritage and Oyster Bay. Three others are new to me, and would
appreciate any feedback on their challenge and design. We are
each 10-16 handicappers, and like longer courses. Gauntlet,
River Hills, and Ocean Harbor are the others...good choices? If
you haven't been to Heritage, it's the most beautiful setup I've
ever seen. Oyster Bay is shorter, but picturesque. Thanx in
advance for any insight. Our group has been going to Myrtle Beach for six years. The
concensus is Oyster Bay is the best course, followed closely by
any of the Legends three courses. I would say that of the three
Parkland is the best overall, but Moorland is the most fun.
Playing the surcharge courses is definitely worth it but of the
non-surcharge courses Cypress Bay is about the best we have
played. Other good course are the Dunes, Long Bay, Caledonia,
Heritage, and any of the Wildwing courses. Pawleys Plantation is
the toughest course we've played. As Jack says he doesn't design
courses for amateurs. We plan going to Myrtle at the end of
Febuary, and one of our stops is at Wicked Stick, but with all
the negative comments I'm starting to get worried about playing
there. As far as accommodations you can't beat the Carribean. We
couldn't get in their this year so we decided to go to the Beach
Colony. If any body has any comments on Beach Colony it would be
much appreciated. As far as restaurants the two best we found
are Shenanigans and a place called T-Bones (not the chain)
located in the Pawleys Island area. We've always had a great
time Myrtle Beach, its definately the best golf bang for the
buck. We're getting ready to go back to MB again...has anyone had
any experience lately at the Atlantic Paradise Inn? Apparently,
they've just remodelled some rooms there. We are visiting MB for our second time in early February.
Several of the courses we will be playing are Longbay, The
Witch, River Hills, Burning Ridge and Heritage. We are
contemplating substituting Oyster Bay instead of Heritage. Does
anyone have any opinions on a comparison of these two courses?
or any other comments on our course selection? (we cannot afford
to play ALL premium courses) Wicked Stick was the worst golf course I have played down in
Myrtle Beach in the 11 years that I have been going there. Best
restaurant.....thoroughbreds..... best golf course.....Caladonia
Having planned and participated in group golf excursions to
Myrtle Beach for many years, I have the benefit of input from
all of the participants in our trips. I have no idea what some
of these guys who praise Wicked Stick have been smoking, but the
course is an all-time LOSER in the minds of the twelve guys in
last years group who played there! Our advice is to avoid it!
The concensus BEST is as follows: Caledonia, Oyster Bay,
Heritage, Pawleys Plantation, and Tidewater. This year we will
play several of these adding Angel's Trace North. There are many
great courses in MB so it's hard to go wrong, UNLESS YOU PLAY
WICKED STICK! PS - I seriously doubt that John Daly had anything
to do with the course OTHER, of course, than picking up his
check! I have been going to Myrtle Beach since I was in college
(about 30 years) almost every year. Since I have had kids in
school (last 18 years or so), we go right after school is out
(early June). I started out in motel/hotels, but with kids, a
condo is best. For the past 10 years or so we have been using
Grand Strand Vacations and Thomas Realty for rentals in North
Myrtle Beach. North Myrtle is the best for number of golf course
close by. Yet my family has lots of things to do if they tire of
laying in the sand. Some condos I have stayed in recently and
recommend: Beachmaster, Ocean Garden Villa, Sea Cabin. Sea Cabin
may not be as nice as the others, but is usually least expensive
and has its own pier and fishing facilities. Of course, with
condos every unit is maintained and furnished by it's owners, so
each is different. I have played most of the older courses there
and many new ones. I even have my own database set up with info
on every course there. I especially like Possum Trot. It
advertises itself as the "friendly course" and is. Also I'm not
as long off the tee as I used to be, and the course is more
playable. Other courses I play a lot and enjoy: Eagles Nest,
Gator Hole, Bay Tree (3 courses), and Myrtlewood (2 courses). I
like playing in the summer. Fall and Spring are more
crowded/expensive on the courses. Afternoon in the summer most
courses have very inexpensive specials. Our favorite restaurants
are Capt. John's at Calabash (lots of excellent seafood places
there) and the Outrigger just outside Possum Trot. The Outrigger
has OUTSTANDING steamed, spiced shrimp. I've been To MB just one time but I loved it. The Witch was
awsome. I'm going back in Feb. Does anyone have any good tips of
where to stay or what courses to play. WE GOT A LATE START ON OUR PLANS THIS YEAR FOR MYRTLE, SO WE
WERE NOT ABLE TO GET SOME OF THE BETTER COURSES. HAS ANYONE
PLAYED PRESWICK, GLEN DORNUCH OR PARKLAND ? LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU
THOUGHT. Have been going to Myrtle Beach now for the last four years
for golf holiday and each year gets better and better. LONG BAY
AND THE WITCH ARE A MUST ON ANY GOLFERS TRIP. Can't wait to go
back for this years trip. A group of us spent 10 days in the MB area last March '96
playing many different courses. Our opinion of Wicked Stick is
that it was lously at the time. Has anyone played it recently?
We are planning another trip in March of '97 and don't know
whether to take a chance again or not. Thanks 12-27-96 Have been to MB for past 13 years, usually in late
October. Weather mostly very good. Best courses for me all have
Bentgrass greens, or some newer hybrids similar to Bent...the
Bermuda greens are very frustrating unless you're used to them.
Best courses: Wild Wing-all) , Angel Trace(both), Sea Trail-all,
Heritage, The Witch, Oyster Bay & Marsh Harbour, The Pearl-both,
Panther Run and Lion's Paw. Tidewater a good course, but too
expensive. All of above have surcharges, but worth it. Best
restaurants: Flo's Place in Murrell's Inlet; Damon's;
Gullyfield's; most other Murrell's Inlet places ok too. Nice
place to stay in North MB is Ocean Court...nothing fancy, but
Scott & Linda great to work with. Plan to bring a larger group
out next year. A group of 12 of us will be staying in Myrtle Beach for the
seventh year in a row. We are playing a few courses we have not
played before. I'm asking any golfers who have played Wicked
Stick, Indian Wells, Mooreland, or Wild Wing (Wood Stork) for
any helpful information and opinions on these courses. I rate the top three golf course as follows We have been visiting MB for the past 3 years, usually in
late april. This seems to be an ideal time for us, since my wife
enjoys the weather at this time of year, and I'm hooked on
golf(pardon the pun)! The weather has been most accomadating!
Rain has been virtually non-existent. Temp.'s low 80's day &
60's eve. Would recommend golfers play premium courses only.
Last two winters have had little precipitation, so non-premium
links rock-hard or greens torched! Need your assistance for
upscale facility w/ ocean & courses together, preferably in
North Mrylte! Please respond to mzabel@bellatlantic.com. Been to M.B. 3 times...Tidewater is awesome, Arrowhead is
tough, Legends is great. Ocean Forest is OK but you have to
drive to other Sands resorts for breakfast (no restaurant at O.F.).
Breakers is very nice. The women are nice--those southern
accents get me. Northern boy looking for Southern belle that
golfs... I've been to the Myrtle Beach area 10 times. Tidewater and
the Heritage Club are the best courses down there. Pine Lakes
was a disappointment and Colonial Charters was in rough shape.
As for places to eat go to Shenanigans. If you're a golf lover,
be sure to stop in Martins Nov 13, 1996...Have been visiting the area for six years in a
row and can't find one real strong complaint about any of it.
Don't stay at The Helms Motel. Do stay at the Ocean Forest or
Caribbean, especially the Caribbean. Do golf any Legends course,
Oyster Bay, Marsh Harbour or any of the Wild Wing courses. Going
to try Gator Hole, Tidewater, Arrowhead, Wicked Stick, Angels
Trace(North) and Man O War in late February/early March of 1997.
Any body got anything to offer on any of these courses. Best
bang for your buck we think. Birdies aweigh. jonesd@rpm2.mb.ec.gc.ca
11/7/96 Visited Myrtle last March. Our foursome really enjoyed
Legends as we were able to play 18 at Moorland, front 9 at
Heathland and back at Parkland all in one day!! We stayed at
Ocean Sands which was average at best but we were there to golf
anyway. Planning another trip March of 97'. Any super deal
packages out there? Hit 'em long!! Four of us golfers are going to MBSC on 11-22-96 to 11-27-96
I'm intersested in golf packages or discounts only! We have A
place to stay already but can't seem to find "golf only"
packages or discounts, everyone so far wants to include
lodging.PLEASE HELP!!Also,we want to play just the premium
coarses...Tidewater...Wild Wing...Dunes...etc... Just got back from Myrtle Beach trip with 27 other golfers.
We played ANGEL'S TRACE. Excellent condition. Played LONG BAY
also. That was challenging but fun and in great shape. Bad news
at CAROLINA SHORES. Fairways were nice but the greens had
mushrooms growing on them! Good Golfing! I was in Myrtle Beach for the DuPont Invitational selling
SOLO GOLF equipment. I just wanted to comment on how nice I was
treated by everyone. Hope I can come back soon, and anyone who
is interested in new aerospace technology in golf clubs, (wind
tunnel tested), please contact me for further info and brochures
about SOLO GOLF. Jimmie Adams was low qualifier for the Ralph,s
Senior Tournament on 9/30/96 shooting a 62 with SOLO equipment.
Bill Viele wfvone@pe.net 10/10/96 I just moved to the Myrtle Beach area and have played a few
courses here, I recommend 'Wicked Stick Golf Links' to anyone
planning a trip to the area. Conditions were great, and people
(service) were friendly. John Daly definitely has a winner!! Just recently returned from the Grand strand and had a very
enjoyable time with the family. I also had the plesure to play a
few of the many courses in the Myrtle Beach area, of the ones we
played by far Legends Parkland was the most well manacured
course I have played in a long time. Possum Trot was also a nice
course that is good for all types of players. We are planning a
trip in early November with some golfing buddies and would
appreciate any suggestions on good packages for this time of
season. I was wondering what the best non-surcharge courses are in
the grand strand. We are middle handicappers. thanks! WE JUST CAME BACK FROM MYRTLE. TEN GUYS. WE STAYED AT THE
CARAVELLE IN THE HARBORESIDE CONDOS. GOOD ACCOMODATIONS FOR
LARGE GROUPS. WE PLAYED OYSTER BAY, MARSH HARBOUR AND WILD
WING (FALCON AND ADVOCET). WE LOVED WILD WING FALCON THE
BEST, ADVOCET SECOND, MARSH HARBOUR, AND THEN OYSTER BAY. IT IS
WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY TO PLAY THE BETTER COURSES. Just got back from Mrytle Beach, nice place, and is a golfers
dream come true. We went 3/6/96, weather was a little cold and
blustery, but still enjoyed most of the courses. One
recommendation is to stay away from the Links Group golf
courses, these are the no surcharge of lesser surcharge courses,
but as we all know, you get what you pay for! Donnot play
Burning Ridge, Quail Creek, Indigo, Tradition, you will be
disappointed, play Marsh Harbour, Wild Wing courses,
Tidewater, Waterway, Blackmoor or Oyster Bay, Have fun!! Well, my wife and I just got back from the Grand Strand. The
weather was lousy, but at least there was no snow. Here's a low
down on the courses and some places where we ate. First the
course: My family has visited Myrtle Beach for over 20 years.
Excellent golf (John Daly's Wicked Stick is good) and
great restaurants. -- What course would be good for a once a week golfer while
visiting Myrtle. High handicapper that wants to enjoy some fun
golf while visiting Myrtle. Also, since I am coming with my
non-golfer wife, will I be able to find some golfers to hook up
with at the course? Hey, all you golfers. For the best place to eat I recommend
the Old Pro's Table. It can be a little pricey but worth it.
Also, I know most of you go to get away from the wife or
girlfriend so don't forget THEE DOLL HOUSE!!! By the way Pine
Lakes is the oldest golf course in the area and is probably
the best. 2/2/96 HAVE FUN. I've been to MBSC seven times. I've golfed with my buddies
three times and vacationed with my wife and children the other
four times. Every vacation was outstanding as MBSC is the
friendliest place that I've ever visited. We've stayed at
KINGSTON PLANTATION and a number of the DUNES places. They are
both excellent. Golfing at MARSH HARBOR (17th is my
favorite golf hole ever) and OYSTER BAY are a must for
every golfer. Every place that we have eaten has been great. No
one short changes you in MBSC because they WANT you to keep
coming back and we are going again in April for our 4th
consecutive year. I hope to see you there. If you have any
questions please email me at tbissell@biddeford.com Hello! 1/19/96 - My friends & I have been trekking to Myrtle Beach
for 3 years. Our 4th trip is coming up in less than a month.
Each year, we O.D. on golf (for example, last year, we stayed 5
nights and played 10 rounds). We love the Caribbean Resort &
Villas and the Sea Captain's House. Favorite course has to be
the Dunes Club. Also love to play Myrtlewood -
Pinehills and Long Bay. Best non-surcharge courses are Indigo
Creek and Buck Creek. I've played about 30 courses at the
beach - if you need any information about the ones I've played,
feel free to contact me. I have been to MB three times in the last year and a half. I
really like it there for golf and other activities. I go in
November with couples (stay in a condo by CONDoTELS, very nice).
I organize a boys trip in March (stay at Days Inn Surfside,
Scottys Golf, I recommend). I have played at 10 different
courses. All were good, Blackmoor and Oyster Bay were my
favorites. Marsh Harbor was excellent also. The Links
Group courses I played (Burning Ridge Cypress Bay and Quail
Creek) were not as well conditioned but still good courses.
All in all I like MB and plan to return many times. Our Foursome has been coming to MB the last weekend in
February since 1988. Have enjoyed stays at HILTON, and SEA TRAIL
best. This year (1996) trying THE WINDS in Ocean Isle Beach.
SEA TRAIL 3 courses a must play along with LIONS PAW, THE
PEARL and OYSTER BAY. Worst experience was MYRTLE WEST. For
great fun play GATOR HOLE and one of THE LEGENDS
courses. Really, you can't go wrong anywhere. Enjoy
yourselves!!!! My buddies and I start our golf season off with a four day
weekend each spring, and end the season with another four
marathon each fall. Myrtle Beach is golf heaven. We never get
tired of it. It will take us 20 more years to play every course
as they build them faster than we can play them. We love
Myrtle!!! Not surprised to see the name Wild Wing come up so
many times. A great collection of courses. We were really
impressed with the TV screens on the carts. It's like having a
caddie in your cart. Hi! We have been stopping at Mrytle Beach on our way to
Charleston for the past 3 years. Wild Wing is our
favorite golf complex so far with their 4 great golf courses. We
also like the hospitality cart that comes by while we are
playing which allows us to pick up food and drinks. It makes us
feel like we are members of an exclusive, private club the way
their staff treats us. Ohh don't forget to check out Myrtle
Waves Water Park. Our entire family had a blast there. I hope to
get back there this fall just to play some different golf
courses. If you're looking for golf at the beach - this is IT! I'd
heard much about Myrtle Beach from coworkers but only recently
had the pleasure of a visit. We played at Myrtlewood and
Wild Wing Plantation. Wild Wing Plantation is huge - 4
courses - all in great shape. I highly recommend playing at
least one round there. If you go during the offseason (around
December) you can get an incredible bargain on oceanfront rooms
and rounds of golf. See you there!
