Im 15 years old and have been going to Duck on the OBX about
every summer of my life. I have been there as a little kid, and
as a teenager and have never been bored. There are a lot of
water sports to do, shopping, ect...but the best part is just
being on the beach for most of the day because the beach there
is so great, you dont need a board walk to have fun. That would
just make it crowded, and that is the last thing we would want
to do to the banks!

The airport in Myrtle Beach is on the south end of town and the
traffic is very congested, so we fly into Raleigh. Even though
it's a little farther, it is an easier drive.

What is the closest airport to the Outerbanks. My son may join
us this year on vacation via a one-way ticket and then drive
back with us. We will be staying in Hatteras. Also, how do I see
the answers to the questions some people have submitted on your
webpage. Some were very interesteding about lighthouse, the
fishing and best ways to trave from the North.
Thank you.

My family rented a great house on Beach Road in Kitty Hawk last
summer from Wright Property Management. They were great! I
highly recommend them. Our house was ready for check in exactly
when they said it would be. The place was clean and neat when we
arrived. I ordered the linen package when I made the reservation
and all the sheets and towels were delivered before we arrived,
and they were clean! I have no complaints about this rental
company at all. All my future OBX rentals will be with WPM.

Outer Banks Brewing Co was a great find. It was more expensive
than we expected, but, it was totally worth it. My best meal of
the week. Curry tofu and veges was very flavorful with a kick.
The fish and chips were excellent, plentiful and are served with
homeade sauces. My Mahi with a vege compote of asparagus,
artichoke, capers, fancy mushrooms in a yummy reduced sauce was
awesome. Tasty mild ginger beer too.

My friends and I are planning a vacation to NC for spring break
3/2006. I'm having a hard time finding places that will rent to
"non-family" groups. I imagine this is a very common problem,
does anyone have a suggestion or is there not much we can do?
There will only be 5 or 6 of us and we are very responsible.
Thank you.

We just returned from vacationing in Corolla and are planning
for next year's vacation. We are looking for an 8- 10 BR home in
the OBX that will accomodate approx. 18-20 ppl. (2 families)
Oceanfront would be great but close to the ocean is fine. The
week we are interested in is Mid May, (before prime season
begins). I've been looking at the local rental agencies but they
really aren't scheduling for next year so far. We were hoping to
maybe find a private owner and not have to deal with the added
expense of an agency if possible. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Siobhan C.

I've been coming to the Outer Banks since 1990.Last year was the

in love all over again with that part of the islands.Question:We
heard that there are lots of jobs for college students in the
summer.In fact,3 diff.places told my daughters they'd hire them
for the summer months. Dilemma:We are Canadian & it seems to be
next to impossible to get a work visa.I spoke to many students
from Poland & other countries who worked there for the
summer.Does anyone know of Canadians having worked there for the
summer??Is there any info they can share? Thanks! Gunny

I was looking in the 2004 questions and could not find the
answer someone asked so I will ask again. We are traveling from
Columbus Ohio to the OBX in early June. Which route is the
fastest and least stressfull? We will be pulling a small trailer
also. We are leaning towards taking I-77 to Winston Salem where
we will stop over. Then next day going on past Raleigh and get
on US 64 straight into the Outerbanks. (This is the route AAA
gave us). I know traffic will be bad closer we get to the OBX
but this is true from either direction. The other route would be
I-70 out of Columbus to US 19 to I-68 to I-81 to I-66 to US 17
to I-95. This route avoids tolls and D.C. traffic. From here
take I-95 into Richmond for a stop over then traveling on down
the coast I-64 to I-664 on down to 168 then 158 to Highway 12 in
the Outer banks. I hear the first way down 77 is longer but when
you hit the costal traffic going the other way on the weekend it
is going to take you just as long waiting in the traffic. We
also hear the roads are far less steep going down 77 and the
drive is much nicer. We would like to hear from people who have
driven both, thanks!

Category: Remember When...
I am writing a story about the Outer Banks set near the Cape
Hatteras Lighthouse during 1954 when the crews were working to
build the National Seashore. I am trying to find info about what
the Hatteras area was like during this time: how populated, what
types of buildings, what type of roads and usual transportation,
police department - anything to help me visualize this time
period. I've been a frequent visitor since 1968- but I was only
3 and don't remember a lot :) There were also a lot of changes
right before the National Park was opened. I am on a very tight
deadline and need to complete this story by the 2nd of May,
2005. ANy info would be wonderful. Of course, I may write
another story about this time and place - so any comments are
wonderful. Please respond to nikki_leigh22939@yahoo.com Thank
you for your insights and memories. Nikki

I just can not believe I have not found this service until now.
We rented a beach house last week, and had a company called
Outer Banks Grocery Stockers stock our cottage with groceries.
When we arrived we had food in the fridge, cold beer on ice,
landry soap and all the provisions ready to be used when we
arrived. They also offer in house family cooking and bartending
services too. Please do your self a favor and goto
www.outerbanks-obx.com for the greatest service to
your vacation you can add. You know what the lines at the
grocery store can be like on saturday at the Outer Banks. There
phone number is 252-216-0196 ask for Doug he is the owner/
operator of the business. He was great. Thanks Outer Banks and

Kate - I'm also 21 and live in corrolla during the summers (work
at a bar here in ecu) thought i'd help you out and point you in
the right direction from someone who runs in the same crowd. as
far as cocktail waitresses we really dont have many places like
that on the obx, but for night spots your best bets are
quagmires, kelly's, port o cal, or the obx brewery(all located
b/w mp 3-14). if u want to be in more of a club scene the only
thing is the PIT (milepost 9) also a young crowd but bigest
night is mug night. most summer college students like us take up
a job bartending, serving or being a steamer/bar tender. bc most
of the shifts go 4-11 allows us to surf and play all day then go
to work but get off in plenty of time to still go out and party.
good luck and see ya down there

To Vicki, Hi my family has been visiting the Outer Banks for
almost twelve years. The only houses for rent I have seen in the
North Beach area (Corolla, Whalehead) that are $700 per week are
sound side, plus it depends on the season, (off-in-mid) Nags
Head may be cheaper but I am not sure. I prefer the North
Beaches. There are some houses that do allow pets. Get some
rental books and book Early! We usually have to book a year in
advance. You could also look into the oceanside rentals that are
in cul-de-sacs.

In response to posts regarding crabbing in Avon, renting to high
school kids & where did Nags Head get its name: If you want to
go crabbing, rent a house on the soundside, pref. on a canal or
the sound itself, or else you'll have to trespass on some other
renter's or a "local's" property. ALL real estate agencies on
Hatteras Island are on the lookout for and are cracking down
harder every year on high schoolers trying to rent homes with a
bunch of friends. Having worked for years with one of those
rental agencies, I have seen (#1) a whole houseful of kids run
out of a rental home in the wee hours of the morning by a
property manager accompanied by an armed sheriff's deputy and
(#2) seen what those kids did to a property worth over half a
million bucks. The policy is and will remain: renting only to
family groups PERIOD. Try your luck up around Corolla, you can
drive down to Hatteras for a day trip. And Nags Head supposedly
got its name because pirates would tie a lantern around the neck
of and old "nag" and walk it on the beach at night, and the
ships would see the light & think it was ships bobbing at harbor
and tried to come in to shore and ended up stuck on the shoals.
