We stay as far South as we can, every summer, in Hatteras
Village.
Last summer the mosquitoes were TERRIBLE. We've been there 3
summers so far, and that was THE WORST ever. But the other
summers were not too bad.
It was when the wind stopped, that we'd all of a sudden get
eaten alive. We ended up getting cans of 40% DEET spray, and
that seemed to help. Cancer in a can, of course...

When we were looking for houses our realtor said that if we were
going to buy on the sound side, that we would need a screened in
porch as the mosquitoes could get pretty bad. It depends
sometimes on where you are. We walk to the sound all the time
and sit there for awhile and never have a problem. My husband
says that is because where we sit the water is moving and there
aren't many reeds etc. We do know that a lot of people own and
rent on the sound side, so how bad can it be???? We also have
shopped in stores in Duck at different times of the day that are
right on the sound and never had a problem. My husband says they
also have mosquito control here - they spray certain areas which
helps. Hope this information is helpful.

looking for a 6-10 day exchange, you could even split and use

Category: Places to Stay
hey, me and a bunch of friends are looking for a place to stay
preferably in duck or carolla. We're all 19, one of us might be
20, but we don't want to cause any trouble; we are a clean,
neat, and well behaved group of kids. We just want to spend some
time at the beach. We did this last year but couldn't find any
place that would rent to anyone under 24. Eventually, we got a
family member to pick up a key for us while we spent the week in
obx. The week was probably the best week of my life. Nothing
went wrong, the house was clean and perfectly fine.
Does anyone know of any owners who will rent to 19 year olds?
Any place you would recommend calling or searching for? Please
don't tell me to go to another beach with my friends. I don't
want to be rude, but frankly we want to go to obx, not some
place else.
Thanks for all the help!

Hi, you probably have lots of answers by now - but I just
wanted to share that Kill Devil Hill or Nags Head have more
things for teenagers to do. Remember, that the Outer Banks are
actually several towns that are within miles of each other, so
it will be easy to get to a different "town". The most removed
are the north end which is Corolla, Duck, and Corova. The most
southern end has Avon, Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe, Hatteras.
Anything in the middle - which is Southern Shores, Kill Devil
Hills, and Nags Head is centrally located. Hope this helps. Hope
you enjoy OBX!

As far as the crabbing goes we have had some luck at times on the bridge on the way back into Collington
Harbo. Its the right turn right after the Wright Memorial a couple miles back. Make sure that you are there while the
tide is moving in or out seems like the best time. When the tide ebs action
drops off. Last year caught about 2 dozen keepers in about two hours.
Good luck.

I'm 15 years old and have been going to Duck on the OBX about
every summer of my life. I have been there as a little kid, and
as a teenager and have never been bored. There are a lot of
water sports to do, shopping, ect...but the best part is just
being on the beach for most of the day because the beach there
is so great, you dont need a board walk to have fun. That would
just make it crowded, and that is the last thing we would want
to do to the banks!

I was looking in the 2004 questions and could not find the
answer someone asked so I will ask again. We are traveling from
Columbus Ohio to the OBX in early June. Which route is the
fastest and least stressfull? We will be pulling a small trailer
also. We are leaning towards taking I-77 to Winston Salem where
we will stop over. Then next day going on past Raleigh and get
on US 64 straight into the Outerbanks. (This is the route AAA
gave us). I know traffic will be bad closer we get to the OBX
but this is true from either direction. The other route would be
I-70 out of Columbus to US 19 to I-68 to I-81 to I-66 to US 17
to I-95. This route avoids tolls and D.C. traffic. From here
take I-95 into Richmond for a stop over then traveling on down
the coast I-64 to I-664 on down to 168 then 158 to Highway 12 in
the Outer banks. I hear the first way down 77 is longer but when
you hit the costal traffic going the other way on the weekend it
is going to take you just as long waiting in the traffic. We
also hear the roads are far less steep going down 77 and the
drive is much nicer. We would like to hear from people who have
driven both, thanks!

far as cocktail waitresses we really dont have many places like

quagmires, kelly's, port o cal, or the obx brewery(all located
b/w mp 3-14). if u want to be in more of a club scene the only
thing is the PIT(milepost 9) also a young crowd but bigest night
is mug night. most summer college students like us take up a job
bartending, serving or being a steamer/bar tender. bc most of
the shifts go 4-11 allows us to surf and play all day then go to

In response to posts regarding crabbing in Avon, renting to high
school kids & where did Nags Head get its name: If you want to
go crabbing, rent a house on the soundside, pref. on a canal or
the sound itself, or else you'll have to trespass on some other
renter's or a "local's" property. ALL real estate agencies on
Hatteras Island are on the lookout for and are cracking down
harder every year on high schoolers trying to rent homes with a
bunch of friends. Having worked for years with one of those
rental agencies, I have seen (#1) a whole houseful of kids run
out of a rental home in the wee hours of the morning by a
property manager accompanied by an armed sheriff's deputy and
(#2) seen what those kids did to a property worth over half a
million bucks. The policy is and will remain: renting only to
family groups PERIOD. Try your luck up around Corolla, you can
drive down to Hatteras for a day trip. And Nags Head supposedly
got its name because pirates would tie a lantern around the neck
of and old "nag" and walk it on the beach at night, and the
ships would see the light & think it was ships bobbing at harbor
and tried to come in to shore and ended up stuck on the shoals.

My wife and I have been going to Nags Head over the past 10
years, and we highly recommend "BASNIGHTS LONE CEDAR INN" for
excellent dining and service. Some of their employees remember
us from prior years and are always ready to welcome
you. We don't think that it is expensive!!!

DO NOT STAY at the OUTERBANKS HOSTEL!!! Very nasty place,we
camped there one time(june04) and were up all nite because of
mosquitos(swampy area)and drunks who wouldnt shut up.Then stayed
in the HOSTEL another time, and the place has a really bad smell!
couldnt tell if it was the filthyness of the place or just the
overall stink. Great place for low-lifes, be afraid,be very
afraid.

spending the 2005 summer living in the outerbanks with 3 other

cocktailing or something to that effect. I have many years of
experience waitressing, cocktailing and some bartending

We have had luck with the three rental agencies we have used:
Sun Realty, Joe Lamb, Jr. and Outer Banks Vacation Realty. As to
our first preference, we prefer Outer Banks Vacation Realty. If
there was a problem (such as once the downstairs refrigerator
didn't work) someone came out right away and fixed it. Also,
they sent us what we needed very promptly when we had to file an
insurance claim to get our rental money back when we had to
cancel because of Hurricane Isabel.

be staying in North Avon next June (2005) for our first visit to

The outer banks was GREAT. We rented a smaller home in Corolla
from Karachele Realty, and it was just about the most wonderful
vacation. The people at Karichele were very helpful and the
house was so neat..full of books and antiques and "beachy"
things. The beach was fantastic. Never crowded. Pristine. The
weather was beautiful, in spite of the fact that we rode in on
Charlie!!! (Actually, at the start of our vacation the beach was
empty due to Charlie except for us!) If heaven was a place on
earth it would be the outer banks!!! There was so much to do,
you really need a couple of weeks to see it all. The
lighthouses. The aquarium. Wright Bros. Fort Raliegh. The
Elizabethian Gardens. And there was so much that we still didn't
get to see. We'll definitely be going back!! It's definitely a
place you could easily get homesick for!!!

Looking for a good seafood buffet in OBX? Try Carolina's on
beach road near MP6. Awesome meal for a decent price. I think
this was the first time a went to a seafood buffet where they
didn't run out of crabs legs! They had Mahi Mahi, tuna, shark
and a great set-up. You know your at the right place when they
lay down a paper table cover and put a huge empty bowl on the
table. Roll of paper towels to boot. The waitress was very kind
too. She delivered a basket of steamed clams to our table, which
were kind of tough. When I thanked her for them, but declined
eating anymore, she went back and got the smallest clams they
had and returned to our table with them, saying "Try these, they
might be a little better". That's service! DON'T go to the
Western Sizzler on 12 if you see a seafood buffet on their sign.
They are still learning. BTW - The Wharf Restaurant everyone has
raved about in the past is unfortunately permanently closed. I
understand the owner became ill and sold the property to a real
estate agent for building homes. We were shocked when we found
that out. Didn't try Jimmy's Seafood Buffet. There is something
wrong with enticing customers by giving away $100 daily. Went to
Georges Junction and they surprised us with "Reservations
required" on a Wednesday afternoon at 4:30pm! Many customers
were turned away while we were there and it didn't look that
great anyway. Good luck and have fun!

should go there and see why James Taylor singing "Carolina in My

Hi, I started going to the Outerbanks about 10 - 12 years
ago. about 1991-92. We were in a group of 24 mainly everyone was
family although a few were friends. We rented 2 homes in Carolla,
(Whaleshead beach). I must say that Whaleshead beach was "THE
NICEST" beach on the island. In our opinion. I have to add that
ALL the beaches on the island are the best. We like to move
around from Carolla to Nagshead. Its all #1 to us. I will live
there one day! As I said, There were alot of us and everyone did
their own thing. Parasailing, shopping, canoeing, Boogie
boarding, digging in the sand, getting up early to watch the
sunrise, sitting on top of a sand dune Watching the sunset,
watching the dolphins every morning and evening, being with true
friends and family, my favorite hanging out on the beach. The
restaurants on the Island are very simular. They all from what I
have experianced are really good. I do make sure when I go to
the Island I stop in at the Jolly Roger restaurant. I think its
the best, and the people are very friendly. If you go there you
will not be sorry. Another of my favorite things that happenes
every time you go onto the Island is, The great smell of the
ocean, the air just comes over you and puts you in a peaceful
serine feeling and it lasts however long you are there.

I want to let everyone know what a friendly wonderful place
me and my husband found on the outer banks! If you are planning
a family vacation, this is the best place. White beaches and
friendly locals added to an already grand adventure for us. Our
home through Village Realty provided great comforts, including a
computer...yeah!! The best resturant by far was Carolina Seafood
in Kill Devil Hills. Our waitress was Denise, who needs to
rethink her calling in life! Not only was the food great, but
our service was wonderful! Denise can sure keep our glasses
fulland our tummys happy, but she also gave us great a comic
show with each refill, plate pick up, bowling dumping, and crabs
delievery! She was jonny on the spot for all our needs and also
with her jokes and the way she made us feel like close friends.
I only can say one bad thing about our trip to carolina seafood
and that is being shocked at what people leave for a tip. I was
able to observe a small tip on a table felt by the last tentants.
We left more, not for thegreat service and great food but also
because we felt sorry for our waitress who gave these people the
same service but felt that five dollars was good enough for her.
Remember tipping for these people means a pay check! Tip like
you should or dont eat out! 15% of a check is what you should
leave, not 5%.
2thumbs up to the Outer banks of NC and all the people who
treated us like family.

I have been looking at several sites about the devastation the
banks. It truly hurts to see it. I haven't been back in 4 years.
We used to stay at the Pebble Beach Hotel in Nags Head. The last
time I called for reservations, this was after Hurricane Dennis,
I found out the last two cottages had been demolished and the
hotel was being torn down for a new something. Heart breaking. I
have stayed their many times and loved the old nags head charm
of that area and no dunes. I am glad I got to take my son there.
Once when he was 2 ( in the middle of gale warnings) and again
when he was 4. He loves it. I will have to get back soon and
hope that all is not gone this time. I had a feeling when I saw
that category 5 out in the ocean, where it was headed.

My Dad grew up in Boston and New Bedford near the water. As a
child, no matter how little we had, my father would figure out a
way to go to Cape Cod. I was in Nirvana. As the Cape got
overdeveloped and we moved to the Baltimore area I assumed there
would never be a repeat of those seashore sensations (notice I
didn't use the word beach....Atlantic City is a beach but a
seashore?). Then returning from Chicago in the mid-70's my
parents told me about a place called Duck, NC. I went down in
October 1978 and have been going back ever since. I do not need
to convey my memories because they have all been said by others
here. I am humbled and in envy of what I am reading. However if
you will permit me to convey briefly an
experience.................I work in a government agency and an
elderly gentleman requested my assistance. It was Summer 2000
and I had just returned from 2 weeks in Salvo,Hatteras. This
gentleman had a t-shirt on which depicted Outer Banks
lighthouses so I asked him how often he traveled there. "Never"
he gruffly said...his daughter had sent him the shirt. He did
tell me however that he had been there once. During World War 2
the oil tanker he was a crewmember on had been torpedoed and
sunk off Hatteras. Though half the crew perished he had been
rescued. Listening to him describe the incident made you feel
like you were there on the ship. I asked him the ship's name and
then went back to my office to check my "Graveyard of the
Atlantic" map. There it was...his ship. I showed him the map and
he beamed like a child and seemed to be lost momentarily. I
stood there in awe of this coincidence. I pray the Outer Banks,
especially Hatteras and Ocracoke don't go the way of Cape Cod.

My husband and I have visited the outer banks every year for the
past 5 years and usually visit in Sept. The weather is mild, and
there aren't as many people. We usually stay at the Lighthouse
View in Buxton. It is always clean, the rooms are lovely. This
year we are looking for a cottage on the beach if at all
possible, and would like to stay in the Nags Head area, but are
wary, since our last visit, we noticed some houses were actually
in the water at high tide. I am checking out places and realty
companies listed within these postings, but we definiately want
a very clean facility with easy access to the beach. We once
stayed at the Sea Oatel in Nag's head I think it was..I don't
recommend it. Ahhhh the outer banks..so much to do..so little
time!!

Beware the policies of Sun Realty on the Banks. Through their
website we booked one of their rental properties. All was what
it was advertised until we got a look at the "lighted volleyball
court". This turned out to be a volleyball dune. Yes there was a
net but the court had long been a sand dune. Complete with
decorative grass. When we called to complain we were told to
bring it up at check out. At check out we were told no one was
there to handle it. Instead of getting our security deposit back
we were told the house had not been cleaned. Mainly the beds had
not been made. Understandable except we paid $90 to have maid
service provided by Sun Realty. We even left a $20 tip for the
maids! We are not deadbeats. We are all responsible college
educated middle aged adults who stayed at the house. When we
called to discuss the issues we were told that we were to only
respond in writing. What kind of service is this? We will not
take a rental with Sun Realty again and I would encourage others
to ask direct questions regarding the condition of the house
upon departure. Did I mention the holes in the walls and the
ceiling fan that didn't work?

- Loved the Cedar Island ferry ride to Ocracoke.
- Took the ATV onto the beach & rode for hours looking for
shells & watching the surf fishers.
- Also saw sea turtles nesting on the beach.
- Ate,partied and danced at Howards Pub 2 nights in a row.
Howards had a great band playing that week-end.....I think the
name of the Band was "Blanket" played a variety of great music
from the 60's (Jimmi Hendrix, Janis Joplin) 70's, and present
day rock. I wish I could find more info on this band, THEY
ROCKED. I think they were from Washington DC Pass info on if you
have any. And Howards food & service was great, I don't care
what anyone else writes. I'd go back in a skinny minute.
- Ocracoke is a fun Island to visit. Lots of shops to go in,
lots of eating places.
- Just don't book reservations at the Pelican Lodge (a Bed &
Breakfast) A very very big big disappointment!!!! Especially if
you get stuck w/ the room on the 3rd floor w/ no bathroom & have
to go down to the dungeon (ground floor) to use the thrown (and
I mean literally) the toliet is up on a platform about 3 ft. and
you have to climb on it. We were totally embarrassed w/ this and
felt like the innkeeper really pulled a fast one on us. Not to
mention the BR shower looked like it hadn't been cleaned since
the middle ages & we had no towels or washclothes to take a bath
w/ the next morning and couldn't find the innkeeper anywhere.
The innkeeper also runs a aviation business, and is gone most
the time running errands. This place just ruined our trip all
together. (Our 15th wedding anniversary spent climbing up & down
2 flights of stairs just to go to the "thrown & then no way of
taking a bath)
- But other than that, I loved Ocracoke & would go back.
- The beach was beutiful and all the islanders were very
friendly.

My husband, family & I have been coming down to the Outer Banks
since 1992. If we can we try to make it down twice a year. We
love it here and plan on moving down when our daughter starts
college. We love the pace of life here. The ocean and sound are
absolutely beautiful and somehow I always seem like I am a
little closer to heaven when I stand on the beach at night at
look up at the beautiful stars. We have stayed with many real
estate companies, all of which have been wonderful and
accomadating. I have to say my favorite is the Village at Nags
Head. I just love everything that they have to offer. From ocean
to sound, golf lovers, water lovers, and just plain lovers they
seem to cater to them all. Our favorite places to eat besides
our kitchen where my husband is the best cook, bar none, he can
make a mean tuna steak, are: Jimmy's Buffet, Jockey's Ribs,
where we celebrate my nephews birthday every year. He loves
their mousse for dessert! The Wharf and I love Jolly Rogers!
They have the best She Crab soup! We have been to the
Lighthouses from Corola to Hatteras. My husband, nephew and my
cousin went to the top of Hatteras after it was moved and said
the view was breathtaking. We have made a trip to Okracoke which
I think was worth the drive. It was beautifual and quaint.
Jockey Ridge is beautiful at sunset....and dont forget about the
Sunset Cruise on the Sound. I love it all and will be back again
this June! Please have a wonderful vacation...Relax and let the
Outer Banks soothe what ails you!

Every year we go to Avon Cape Hatteras with my family. All year
I can't stop thinking about how gorgeous it is. The beach is
almost all to you, and so gorgeous. I love the sounds of the
waves and the feel of the sand in between my toes. We stay in
huge gorgeous houses, and shop at the Food Lion. We fish and
reminisce. And after our week long stay is over, I crave Udder
Delights Ice Cream the rest of the year!

The Outer Banks is our favorite vacation spot, epically Ocracoke.
What a wonderful place to relax and get away from it all.
Howard’s end is a favorite eating spot and so is the pelican.
The fish house in Buxton, is a wonderful i place to eat, also.
We have had a good time at the fire house on our island, playing
bingo and meeting some of the townfolks. The obx is truly a
wonderful place to go on vacation. David and Wilma Styers

We had dinner(?) at GEorges. It was by far the worst
resturant that I have frequented. It was inedible!!!They charged
approximately $20 per person for what proved tobe truely awful.
The only edible food was the salad.Even after I complained, I
received a cursury smile and nosatisfaction from the manager on
site. The fried chickenwas cold and dry. The she crab soup was
flour and water with fake crab. The vegetables were cold and
tastelessEven the macaroni and cheese was tasteless!!! The
turkey was sliced deli. I was afraid to try any of the fishes
available as they look like they had been sitting out for days.
I have eaten in resturrantsin many areas of the country and have
never felt compelled to complain prior to this. I even enjoy
fast foods on occassion. But this meal did not even come up to
the standards of the worst fast food resturant. Let the buyer
beware.

last june with my family i went on vacation to nags head north
carolina. We visit nags head every june. But this year i did
somthing different . I visited the Nags head Dolphin watch wich
i have never done before . It was alot of fun because i was able
to see all of the dolphins up close and dolphins are my favorit
animals . Well actualy they are mammals . I love Dolphins so
much and when i am older i want to study dolphins and hopfully
become a marine biologest . So my advise to anyone who loves
dolphins and want to learn more about them the visit the nags
head dolphin watch . if you want to learn more then on the boat
you are able to ask the boat driver about them while you are on
the boat . they know alot especialy about the dolphins they
stayed arount that area, so well that the had names for them
.How can they tell the difference between them? Well it is easy
to tell bacause there fins are different. some have been hit by
boats and a peice of there tale has a mark on the top. When we
arrived back to the dock there was a gift shop there was books
t-hirts, etc.Well it was alot of fun so i uject that you should
go and check it out. Kaitlyn Yorke

My family and I just returned from a wonderful week in Whalehead.
The ocean was great, kayaking in Currituck sound was lots of
fun, climbing the Corolla lighthouse afforded us a great view,
and seeing the wild ponies north of Corolla was a great
experience. The small pink colored book entitled "Whalehead
Tales of Corolla N.C." as told by Norris Austin, written by
Suzanne Tate added immeasurably to our enjoyment of the Corolla
(pronounced CUH-RAWL_UH) area. We hope to return for more family
vacations.

My wife and I are coming to the Avon area for the first time
starting Sept. 14. We are staying at the Suncatcher cottage that
we rented through Outer Beaches Realty(#022). Does anyone know
anything about that particular cottage? Where are the best
places to find the best sea shells? Where is the best fishing
areas in Avon? We are very excited. Hopefully, we will find it
nice and peaceful and relaxing. We go to Florida all of the
time. We hope this turns out nicer because it is closer to our
Ohio home. Does anyone have any suggestions for must sees, good
shops or good restaurants in that area? Thanks for helping us
first-timers out.

06/22/99 My family and I just got back from our first trip to
the Outer Banks. We had a good time and plan to go back again
next year. I would've said we had a great time, but it was in
the sixties and rained most of the week. We stayed in Southern
Shores and had a nice house on the beach. We hit most of the
"tourist spots" on the trip and found most of them worthwhile.
For anyone really interested in nature, I would definitely
recommend visiting Nags Head Woods (but wear plenty of bug
spray). It was really neat. I also went to Pea Island but the
biting flies were just too much (even with a ton of bug spray).
It would probably be great at any time of the year but summer.
We were looking forward to the Elizabethan Gardens, but were
disappointed. Very little was in bloom, I guess we maybe went at
a bad time of the year. We ate at Tortuga's Lie and Rundown Cafe
based upon recommendations listed here. My wife was a little
tentative at first, (she is usually reluctant to try any
different types of foods). We were both very impressed with both
places. The food, prices, and atmosphere were great. I
personally am not into those plain old boring family style
restaurants. We also had our one and a half year old daughter
with us, so we didn't want to try any place too fancy. I would
recommend the coco loco chicken at Tortuga's and the Rundown
soup and Jerk chicken were great at Rundown cafe. We also ate at
Bad Barracuda's - I would rate this place average at best for
food and about the same for service. Mako Mike's was our last
stop for dinner. It was decorated really neat, (propellors for
fans, bright colors, etc.), and the food was decent, but not
great. I would recommend this place to someone who wants a
general steak, burger, pizza, pasta place or to anyone who has
kids. As I said we had a good time overall and are planning on
going back next year (with hopefully more sun).

My wife and I have been going to Buxton for 12 years. Five
years ago we realized that to really enjoy OBX you need a 4
wheel drive vehicle. Driving on the beach (especially the
"Point") is fun. Four wheel drive allows you to access the best
beaches. South beach between Buxton and Frisco is especially
good because the surf is relatively calm which makes for good
swimming. The Ocracoke beaches are also very good. There has
been a lot of beach erosion north of the lighthouse and the
south beach is much wider now.

My husband and I are from the Pittsburgh, PA area and have
been travelling to the Outer Banks for 20 years. He took me
there when we first met. At that time there were hardly any
activities except relaxing and fishing which we both love. Our
first year we stayed in a tent at the Camp Ground by the
Hatteras Light House. It cost us $4.00 a day and I can honestly
say it was one of best vacations ever. I can remember going to
Oden's to get our kerosene. Oden's was definately not the store
that it is today. I felt sad when I saw it after it was
remodeled. The old Oden's had character and an appearance that
belonged on the Outer Banks. I've alway's enjoyed stopping at
the Pirate's Chest. One day a week we always take the ferry over
to Okracoke Island to spend the day.Since then, when we visit we
have now upgraded ourselves to a cottage. We love to stay around
the Avon or Buxton area. We prefer this area because we like to
relax, we love the sound and it's not as busy as Kitty Hawk/Kill
Devil Hills area. Becuase of family health problems, we have
been unable to visit for the past four years and we both miss it
terribly. We might try to visit this year either the week of
July 11 or July 18,and I was wondering if anyone knew if there
were any cottages available in the Avon or Buxton area for these
weeks. I know most cottages are probably booked by now, but
because of being uncertain if we will be able to come we haven't
made any reservations. There will be just the two of us, so we
won't need a large place. We also prefer staying on the
Soundfront. I always tell my husband, if someone told me I just
won a vacation to anywhere in the world, I would definately pick
the Outer Banks. To me there is no other place like it in the
world. Can't wait to come back.

I WOULD LIKE TO TELL EVERYONE WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE YOU HAVE IN
THE OUTER BANKS. ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND I TOOK MY FAMILY TO THE
OUTER BANKS, WE STAYED IN RONDANTHE AND ON SATURDAY MORNING WE
DECIDED THAT WE WOULD TAKE THE FERRY OVER TO OCOACROKE ISLAND.
WE ALL CRAMMED INTO MY JEEP AND LEFT. WE HAD NOT GOTTEN OUT OF
TOWN BUT ABOUT 5 MILES AND I SAW MY ALTERNATOR LIGHT HAD COME
ON. WE KEPT GOING NOT WANTING TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE,
AND I THOUGHT WE COULD MAKE IT TO AVON. AS WE GOT TO AVON THE
BATTERY WAS DRAINED AND THE CAR WAS SPUTTERING. I LOOKED AHEAD
AND SAW A CHEVRON SIGN ON THE RIGHT AND DECIDED TO TRY TO MAKE
IT THERE. AS I TURNED INTO THEIR STORE YARD THE CAR DIED. I WENT
INSIDE THE CHEVRON STATION WHICH IS ACTUALLY A DRIVE THROUGH
BEVERAGE STORE AND ASKED THE LADY INSIDE WOULD SHE CALL A TOW
TRUCK FOR ME. SHE WAS NICE ENOUGH TO LET ME USE HER PHONE AND
WAS VERY HELPFUL ABOUT WHO TO CALL. WHILE WAITING FOR THE TOW
TRUCK I DECIDED TO GO BACK INSIDE AND ASK IF SHE WOULD CALL A
TAXI TO GET MY CHILDREN AND MOTHER IN LAW BACK TO WHERE WE WERE
STAYING, ABOUT 15 MILES. SHE TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST A WHOLE
LOT AND THEN TOLD US TO TAKE HER CAR. N0W THIS LADY HAD NEVER
SEEN ME BEFORE IN HER LIFE BUT TURNED OVER HER CAR KEYS TO US.
TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT THE TOW TRUCK CAME AND PICKED ME UP
AND IN ABOUT 3 HRS HAD ME ON THE ROAD AGAIN. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT
WE WOULD HAVE DONE IF NOT FOR THE KINDNESS OF THIS LADY AND HER
HUSBAND. I AM ASKING EVERYONE THAT I CAN WHEN IN THE OUTER BANKS
STOP IN AND SEE THESE FOLKS, THEIR GAS IS AS CHEEP AS I HAVE
SEEN IN THE AREA. SHOULD YOU NEED ANY TYPE OF BEVERAGE YOU WOULD
BE ABLE TO FIND THAT THERE ALSO. THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PEOPLE
LIKE THESE AND I URGE EVERYONE THAT CAN TO SUPPORT THEM. WITH A

Hi. I'm looking for some information and would be happy to
hear from anyone to everyone. My fiancee and I are going to be
staying at the Silver Sands Motel in Nags Head from July 9-July
16 for our first vacation in the Outer Banks. I have read all of
the travelogues and found them very informative. I am wondering
if anyone who's been down to the Outer Banks could e-mail me
about places to eat, where it doesn't cost a fortune, but that
you get good food for reasonable prices. Since I've scanned and
read the travelogue pages, The Wharf, Down Under,The Carolina
seafood buffet, and some other places(can't remember all the
names), got realy high marks on must go to, good food, good
prices, but I didn't see recommendations for places to go for
breakfast. I would really appreciate any feedback that anyone
can e-mail me concerning the prices and quality and quantity of
food of the restaurants/pubs/deli, etc., for breakfast, lunch,
and dinner. It doesn't have to be just in the Nags Head
area, because we hope to go to other towns/beaches down the Outer
Banks, such as Rodanthe, Buxton, etc. To whoever started this
page I would like to thank her/him/they. This page is very
informative, you hear about the different places to stay on the
Outer Banks that you might not have know about, restaurants;
which are evaluated by personal opinion and experience. I think
the best thing is that you get to read about experiences that
other people have had, good and bad. This is a very honest page.
So to the creator and everyone who has added their own
experiences thank you. Karen

Just got back from Buxton....lovely house on the beach with
terrific view of lighthouse. We've been visiting this area and
Kitty Hawk for more than 30 years and will miss the present
views of the lighthouse from the beach, but we fully support the
relocation because we'd rather miss the view than the lighthouse
itself. Very interesting this time watching the preparation for
the move....thanks to Cheryl and Bruce Roberts for e-mailing us
so much info and pictures that set the stage for a greater
understanding of what's going on there. Weather was BAD most of
the week with that low sitting off the coast...but the visit was
interesting nontheless. Great meals at the Pilot House and
Breakwater (Wow, that "Cowboy Steak"). Real good lunch at the
Something Else Cafe. Fishing lousy on the beach--but we caught a
few sea bass one morning on Miss Hatteras.

We have been vacationing the OB for the last 5-6 years. the
best. Got all the best places to eat down--let us suggest The
Mad Crabber in Avon, and The Wharf @ MP 9 1/2 up Kill Devil
Hills way. A must for us each year. We got married this year at
the Wright Brothers National Monument. Stayed at our usual
location--Rodanthe. We like being in the middle of it all---half
way between Hatteras and Nags Head. Ocracoke is a fun day trip.
Rented a plane for a few hours and flew the Banks. Totally
scenic. I offered to take the witnesses that we grabbed for our
wedding up for a ride. They loved it. Landed at Hatteras
Mitchell and First Flght. Flight originated from Dare Co. Munic.
Anybody want to know Pro's and Con's of the banks...dont'
hesitate to e-mail. We've got it down pat!

I've been visiting OBX since 1990--I live in central PA so it
can be quite a trek for my best friend and me, but well worth
the tired backs and sore behinds once we cross the Wright
Memorial Bridge.. I've never visited a place that puts me at
peace the way the banks do--I always feel that I'm coming home.
One of these trips, I just won"t come back to PA,even tho I love
it here, too. If you're looking for clean quiet beaches (even on
the 4th of July!!), friendly people, and incredilble food, ther's
no place better. WE tend to go towards the end ofSeptember--it's
even more quiet, the water is still warm, and there's no waiting
to be seated at restaurants. So for a busy, stressed out trauma
nurse and her best friend, this is heaven on earth. Everyone
enjoy and have a great summer!!!!!!

I had my first experience of cape hatteras when i was sixteen
and loved every minute of it! I have been back to the Outer
banks twice since then once in 1997 and 1998 and now we are
embarking on our third year- 1999- of "Beach trip 1999" third
anniversary! We cannot wait to come back. I will never forget
the serene sea shores and the laidback island lifestyle! The
little shops like the island art gallery and the Food Lion with
it's great prices on Beer and coolers! We fish off of the pier
eat great seafood at the Froggy dog and bask on the beaches! In
1997 we rented a house with a bunch of friends and in 1998 and
this year 1999 we will rent with our family. It is the nicest
vacation we have ever had! We have found some really nice
treasures on hatteras and normally stay in avon, frisco, or
buxton. Also the upper outer banks is great with the Weeping
radish and the shops of Nags Head! we cannot wait until May
22nd! All I can say is relax, have a beer get a great tan, and
take in some sun and fun of the waves lapping at your feet!

We spent our summer 98' vacation on the Outer Banks. This was
our first trip, but I hope not our last. The ferry road to
Oracoke was relaxing, but very long if you have small children
(we have a 1 year old). So make sure you bring lots of
entertainment and extra bottles. When we arrived on the island
we had lunch at Howard's. First, let me tell you, we are from
the mid-west and my husband has tried chili from all over. But
he had the best at Howard's! We ate out on the deck and enjoyed
the afternoon. We also ate at the Down Under. The food was good,
but not as good as I expected. But still worth the stop, enjoy
the view! We did several things while on the islands but the
best is just beach lounging. Just go and relax. Kick up your
heels take a deep breath and learn to enjoy life again.

THE DELECTABLE DISH CATERING by KIMBERLY MCDANEL If you are
looking for a caterer on the Outer Banks, I *highly* recommend
Kimberly McDanel. Kimberly just catered my wedding reception and
"farewell brunch" and I could not have been more pleased. The
food was absolutely amazing!! People commented to me all weekend
long how wonderful everything was from the cocktail hour hor
d'ouvres, to the dinner, to the fruit salad the next morning. In
addition to being delicious, everything looked absolutely
beautiful! Kimberly has an extremely artistic eye, and her
presentation was gorgeous! Another wonderful thing about
Kimberly is that I felt that she enjoyed the planning of our
wedding as much as we did. She was always super enthusiastic and
had many many wonderful ideas for us to think about. She added
so many special touches that they are impossible to count, but
one example is the "Midnight Snack" she left for my husband and
I in our refrigerator for after the reception. It was a box
filled with fruit, crackers, cheese, cookies, and a beautiful
poem on love and marriage. Kimberly made planning long-distance
a breeze and her professionalism and enthusiasm put us at ease
throughtout the entire process. I recommend Kimberly and the
Delectable Dish without hesitation and welcome anyone to email
me for contact information or additional details. Sincerely,

4/23/99 - We are planning our second trip to the Outer Banks,
early August - prime time. We will be with family and friends
hoping to enjoy great weather and all the area has to offer. We
have stayed in Salvo and find it very peaceful, off the beaten
path. When ever I go to the beach I am immediately drawn to the
ocean. I have to see, hear and feel it crashing on my legs. It
is such a healing experience, washing away all of the stresses
of everyday life. Since this will only be our second visit, we
plan to take the ferry to Ocracoke Island and soak up all the
heritage, all do lots of fishing (the Avon Peir and the Point at
Hatteras). If anyone knows of a good charter let us know. Happy
vacationing!!

Okay, there are certain places you have to go for certain
things to eat on the Outer Banks. HURRICANE MO'S for the best
steamed oysters ever (beer and wine only)! CAPT'N FRANKS for the
best hot dogs! CLARA'S for the absolute best ever she-crab soup!
DAIRY MART for the best hamburger you will ever put in your
mouth (outside dining only!) ELIZABETH'S CAFE all around yummy!
For great tuna taco's, it's gotta be GOOMBAY'S. JOHN'S DRIVE IN
for tuna boats with fried okra and don't forget the peanut
butter milkshakes (outside dining only!) THE OASIS: you have to
go get the BELLRINGERS! Raw oyster on a saltine cracker with
horseradish, hot sauce and a jalapeno; a buck a piece. Your
nasal passages will be clear for weeks. My record is six. If
Mark makes them; I can only do three. THAI ROOM for the sauteed
soft shells. We lived on the Outer Banks for nearly 10 years but
go back at least twice a year. Just got back from our 11 days
during Easter 99. Had a wonde! rful time

My husband and I decided to come to the Outer Banks for our
honeymoon on July 25, 1998 and we were not disappointed. This
was the beginning of our lives together, and believe me, it was
a wonderful start. We loved our vacation so much and we are so
glad that this was our choice for our honeymoon. We were able to
relax from our hectic wedding plans and just enjoy each others'
company in a very peaceful environment. We stayed in the Hot Tub
Room at the John Yancey Hotel (Clairion Inn, I believe). It was
a very nice hotel and the jacuzzi was nice. We ate at some
wonderful restaurants including Western Sizzling and our daily
favorite was Dairy Queen!!! We received a lot of food for our
money at Western Sizzling's seafood buffet. The food was
delicious. We love the fact that there are Dairy Queen
restaurants located every couple of miles down the strip!! We
were able to visit a few lighthouses (Bodie Island and Cape
Hatteras) during our stay also. The beach was wonderful and we
came home with wonderful tans. We took nightly strolls on the
beach and woke up early to search for seashells. Unfortunately,
we did not have much luck in the seashell department. One
morning as we watched the sunrise, we saw porpoises jumping in
the water. They were beautiful!! Jockey's Ridge was quite a
climb, but was well worth it. The view was great and we can't
wait to climb it again. We are planning another trip in May 1999
with another couple and are really looking forward to our visit.
We have been reading comments from other visitors to get some
ideas on activities to do the last week in May. We already know
that the Outer Banks will be a vacation spot for us every year!!

For the last six years we have taken a week to relax at the
Outer Banks. After a twelve hour drive we spend the first night
at Nags Head in a motel on the sea. We let out a big sigh,
breathe in that wonderous air, a mild tang of ocean air spiced
with the fragrance of cooking and pines. We unpack, walk on the
smooth warm sand, (our favorite time is the early Fall) and gaze
out to sea, the sun and sky reflecting colors on the ocean.
After a delicious dinner, we again walk the beach, the familiar
roar and hissing of the waves as they relentlesslyt turn on
themselves until they spread themselves prostrate over the
gentle sloping sand, with a gentle hiss and tinkling of broken
shells and sand fall into one another. Off to bed where we
quickly doze off.
Our next day finds us out to breakfast - ever try Sams and Onies?
- and duly fortified, we visit our favorite haunts - Seaside Art
Gallery, a couple of beach stores and finally we provision up at
the Food Lion. Soon we pass more new construction, as Victorian
style townhouses and modern day renditions of the Richarsonian
cottages of Newport. Sea grass proliferates and the sky takes on
an even bigger dimension as we drive towards Duck. Soon we enjoy
the sights of the placid sound on one side of our road and the
horizon of everchanging ocean on the other side. Once we past
the Duck News Cafe (we used to enjoy the dinners there until two
years ago when we found the prices rising, the portions and
quality declining and the service OK),we roll on up to our
destination, Corolla! As we drive past the warm red brick
lighthouse and turn onto our access street, we glow with
anticipation! A few minutes later we unlock the familiar beach
house door, carry many bags and supplies in and get set-up for
the week. Soon we relax on the beach, a lovely breeze blowing
force 5 and the soothing roar of the surf as it surrenders to
the gentle sand. Usually we don't find too many others on the
beach and it is time for quiet contemplation and introverted
reverie. My wife, Nan, trusted sisters-in-laws Kathy with a "K"
and Anne with an "E" (true introverts) pleasantly ask if I am
enjoying myself. Usually a energized extravert, this is my
"downtime" from dealing with people and a wonderful and much
needed time to contemplate and re-energize. Our trusty "adopted
sister" Cathy with a "C" joins us and we look forward to Austins
seafood on the supper table with fresh veggies and gourmet
gifts. After an evening twilight beach walk we read and turn in
early ready for our first day at the beach!
After a few days we sometimes take an adventure to Ocracoke and
enjoy the shade of Howard Street and the first families of
Ocracoke, pay our respects at that "Little bit of English soil"
in which the WWII British mariners were buried after their ship
was torpedoed. A trip to Ocracoke isn't complete until you have
sailed aboard the wooden schooner, WINDFALL, out of Silver Lake.
The Captain is an authority on pirates and can give you the
"Real Scoop" on Blackbeard and his minions. You also have to
visit the wee Ocracoke Light, oldest continually operated
lighthouse in the U.S. outside of Boston Harbor. Our favorite
recollection of Ocracoke is the evening we risked missing the
Hatteras Ferry by stopping the car by the side of the road to
photograph and marvel at one of the most exquisite sunsets we
have ever enjoyed! The shades of mauve, purple and brilliant
orange covered the sky from the Sound to the Ocean and the thin
sheet of water on the wet sand beach reflected back the hues.
Anne resigned herself to a night crossing later, but we JUST
MADE IT! Back on Hatteras we ate at a loud fish roadhouse with
some of the best fish food we have ever eaten with some of the
most colorful characters we have ever had the pleasure of their
company. There is NOWHERE like the Outer Banks!!!! Schooner

Hello, 2-1-99 I stayed at the surf or sound realty in june of
'98 at the dolphin. The house was great except you were supposed
to be able to see the dolphins frolic in the surf and we
couldn't. It was only a block at the most away from us. I loved
to go down at night and stand there not knowing where or when
the waves would hit you. It is TOTAL darkness down there. In the
daytime you jump the waves which is also fantastique. I am 13 so
I stayed with my parents but believe me you have to go there...
You will never forget it..One thing you HAVE to have.. Central
air or a couple nights we didn't need it much.....

Hello all, We've been coming to the Outer Banks since 1993
with the only regret being that I didn't act on my first urges
to visit here 25 years ago! For those of you coming here, just a
few things to help you enjoy your visit
First, RELAX!! and don't be afraid to just come here and do
nothing more than sit on one of the beautiful beaches here and
watch the waves. The farther south down route 12 that you go
from Nags Head, the more laid back the pace. So if you're
looking for exotic night life than maybe this ISN'T place to go
to. There are some great restaurants just about anywhere along
the length of the Outer Banks however. And many have a bar or
lounge to relax in and have a few drinks.
Second, don't be surprised at the change that comes over your
kids! My oldest son is in high school and you can literally see
the stress drain from his face the minute we hit the Wright
memorial bridge! With the chance for them to "just be kids"
again you'll be amazed. And don't be surprised if you grow a new
generation of Outer Banks lovers while you're at it.
Probably the most important thing. GO WITH THE FLOW! The people
who live here have the patience of Job to put up with all of us
tourists. They not only seem to put up with us, most of the
residents here will go out of their way to help or to give a
recommendation for a good restaurant or place to go. Hey, there
are cranky folks in all walks of life and you'll probably bump
into one or two here, but that is the exception. The pace is
slower here, tap into that and remember, you're on VACATION.
Now for things to do, I recommend highly the National parks
programs given in season at the various lighthouses and other
locations along the seashore. Pick up a copy of the seashores
newsletter when you arrive, you can find it at the visitors
center as you enter the seashore just past Whalebone junction or
in other locations. It gives a great headsup on whats going on.
The programs are free and a great way to learn about the area.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is supposed to be moved this year
(1999) so I believe its closed, but the area around the
lighthouse itself is supposed to be open as much as possible. As
for the rest, walk the beach, drive (slowly) along some of the
back roads and just poke around to your hearts content. Watch
your speed on Rt 12, those signs are not just for decoration.
And be VERY wary of where you pull over in the seashore areas to
go watch the water. Those soft shoulders keep the tow truck guys
in business!
Where to stay? Good question, there are accomodations for any
budget and any taste. Check the websites, read some of the
experiences here (and remember, you're NOT staying at the Hilton
so things can be a little more rustic at times) We've stayed in
Buxton at the Lighthouse view since we started vacationing here
and have always enjoyed it. It costs a few dollars, but we've
never had a problem that wasn't taken care of quickly and with a
smile. Make sure your questions are answered regarding refunding
of deposits or rates because of Hurricane evacuations, not all
places refund your money in case you're ordered off!
And the last thing. These islands are probably the most
beautiful places on Earth. You can walk the seashore for miles
sometimes and not see a soul. It also means that if you get in
trouble in the water, you can be on your own for a while. Check
with the hotel or cottage rental places which beaches are
lifeguarded and those red flags mean just that.STAY OUT OF the
WATER. The currents can be strong and the power of the waves
more than you've experienced elsewhere. Keep an eye on the young
ones! Leave nothing but footprints, treat the islands with
respect and yep, you'll be hooked just like we were.

Dear Sirs,
Last year I was in desperate need of vacation. I had had some
very tragic years with the loss of my father and my son. My
eldest daughter insisted that she come home on her spring break
and watch my youngest so that I could go away. While surfing the
net, I came upon the Outer Banks and something about it seemed
right. I wrote away for information and receieved LOTS of
material to make a decision by. Neeedless to say, in the midst
of a blizzard, I left New York last year and headed to the Outer
Banks in off season. It was the FIRST time in my whole life that
I had acheieved such peace in any one place on earth. I went
because of the lighthouses, because of the ability to stay at a
beachfront room at a price I could afford, but I came away with
so much more. I stayed for 5 days and 4 nights and just enjoyed
exploring the sights and mingling with the locals. The truth
about southern hospitality became well known right off the bat.
I could always find a friendly face to chat with and I was never
at a loss for things to do. I slept to the sound of the pounding
surf. It was a turning point in my life and a memorable vacation
that I will never ever forget. I have spoken of the Outer Banks
to anyone who will listen since I returned and cannot wait to
return again someday . Thank you for such a great place at even
off season times ! Sincerely, Marie

Note to the editor: If anyone would like info on the
following: babysitting, grocery delivery or cottage cleaning
during their stay on the Outer Banks (Corolla to Nags Head) my
company, AT YOUR SERVICE, is in its 11th year of providing those
services for vacationers. We are recommended by the Chamber of
Commerce and have been written up in the Virginian Pilot and the
Insiders Guide, among other publications. Thank you.

Editor's Note: I don't normally accept submissions
advertising a business but I let this one in since they provide
babysitting services. I know how tough it can be having a little
one on vacation and trying to find just a little time for "ma
and pa". :-)
We have rented a cottage in Rodanthe for the week of 9/18/99.
It will be myself, my two sisters, our husbands, our children
(ages 1,2,6) and our mother. This will be our first attempt at a
family vacation since we were children ... so, wish us
