What is the fastest route from Jacksonville, NC to Cape
Hatteras. I will be driving and would also like to use the
Ferries. Which bus line runs to nags head, n c. and scheduled on
Thursdays? Is there any other method of transportation to
the area? Category: Fishing Tips & Info Category: Things to Do Category: General Area Hello, I am interested in taking my parents and my
children (11 & 16) for a week in the snow in West Virginia
between Christmas and New Years. I have a large super condo
on the beach in Penang, Malaysia and a very special
residence overlooking the lagoon in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Its
not the banks but if you are looking for a more
international holiday or know someone with a nice place
close to a ski slope in West Virginia who is, I would be
interested in hearing back from you. Thanks Hello: Glad you liked our condo. We sold it in 2006.Sorry.

between the 3rd and 4th week of May in Corolla or Duck N.C.?
Thank you Category: Things to Do Are persons allowed to bring their own ATVs to the beach
vs driving a truck on the beach? Thanks for any info! There is a place in Roadthe called Island Cruisers and
they like to kep on the islands we took a grean one to
moyock musscle. Can someone explain the "sound" to me. Many rentals boast
of a sound front, but I have no idea what that means!! Category: Travel Tips & Questions Category: Places to Stay Category: Things to Do A group of us are camping in Rodanthe this weekend and
need a little insight to where we can go clamming? Also, we
are going to try and go gigging for flounder at night. Can
anyone give me a couple of spots to try. I heard Manteo and
Oragon Inlet. Please help I have 2 early teens and I want to
get them hooked!!! We rented a house through Surf or Sound last week in Avon
and when we arrived, every single bathroom shower curtain
was filthy with mold. They did come and replace all the
shower curtains, but we had a list of 12 other items that
needed to be addressed but never were. The house was Lady of
Dare #532 and it needed an all over house cleaning. In fact,
when we left, the house was cleaner than when we arrived a
week earlier because we cleaned it all before we checked
out. Never again will we rent from Surf or Sound or stay in
Avon, -- the mosquitoes were horrible down south. We never
had that problem in Corolla. We just rented from Avon, NC and the mosquitoes were
horrible. We couldn't be outside the last 3 days of our vacation
because of them. Don't know why they got so bad, may have been
the wind or the 15 min. of rain that we had during the 7 days we
were there but we will never again rent a place in Avon because
of them. The other times we've stayed in Corolla and never had
this problem. I am in the middle of my vacation as I type this in the
morning with my coffee. This was the 5th year we stayed in
the same home dealing with Surf or Sound, but this is the
last year we will consider any house they manage. How's the weather been in the Outer Banks. We are coming
in a couple of days, leaving Connecticut where this summer
has been the horrible, so much rain. I hope we have good
weather at the Outer Banks for our vacation. Category: Things to Do Category: Restaurant - Nags Head and North Category: Fishing Tips & Info
I am also looking to rent dune buggies in the OBX. Any
suggestions? Category: Travel Tips & Questions I'm also looking for a place to rent buggies and ride on
the dunes. Did you receive an answer? We will be traveling to the Outer Banks in two weeks. We
will be leaving from Columbus, Ohio and we were wondering

Sept, Oct and now someone else told me its Nov.....we'd like to
travel to the outer banks for the running of the blues so we
really need an accurate timeframe. can anyone help? We are traveling by car to KittyHawk in July from upstate New
York and would like to know what is the best route to take.
Travel around Washington, D.C. is always heavy. I'm looking for some affordable housing ($900/mo and under)
for my family (2 adults and 2 small kids) in Nag's Head or Kill
Devil just for this summer....can anyone point me in the right
direction or know of a place? Hi, you probably have lots of answers by now - but I just
wanted to share that Kill Devil Hill or Nags Head have more
things for teenagers to do. Remember, that the Outer Banks are
actually several towns that are within miles of each other, so
it will be easy to get to a different "town". The most removed
are the north end which is Corolla, Duck, and Corova. The most
southern end has Avon, Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe, Hatteras.
Anything in the middle - which is Southern Shores, Kill Devil
Hills, and Nags Head is centrally located. Hope this helps. Hope
you enjoy OBX! I would like to know if I come from NJ where in Richmond or
nearby can I go crabbing off any docks. Can you please write
back and let me know Category: Things to Do I am a responsible LEGAL 18 year college freshman who just
wants to go to the beach with my suitemate and other friends.
But the state of North Carolina doesn't want us too! Come on
give the bored college kids a break. There is no reason we
should be discriminated against because we still have our youth
and want to have a little independence from our FAMILY! We live in Pefferlaw Ontario, which is 1 hour north of
Toronto, Ontario. My family (6 adults and 2 toddlers or possibly extended
family which will add 5 more adults)) have gone to Myrtle Beach
for yrs and are looking for a change and thinking about the
outer banks. While we have heard some good things, we have also
heard that the currents are so bad in some areas that you can't
get in the ocean, there is no where to go out to eat, water is
too cold in June, etc. Any plusses or negatives you can give us
would be appreciated. We would love a house with a pool or a
nice condo. I'm looking for best place to stay near Rodanthe Pier NC and
to surf fish Category: Things to Do Category: Fishing Tips & Info Hi, we are going to the Avon area of the Outer Banks
shortly. When I was little, I was at a wonderful crabbing site
but have not been able to remember nor find the place since. Can
you give me pointers on where I can go. I will travel up and
down a bit. Thanks, Amy Where is there a regular grocery store located near DUCK? Is
there one on the way into OBX? --- We're just trying to figure
out where to stop prior to getting to our rental house. --- Any
information you can provide would be very helpful. Hi I'm from Charlotte and I would like to know where is a
good place to go crabbing and catching shrimps and the cost for
rentals like boats, equipment, etc.. Thanks. Look into the KOA campground on Hatteras Island. I just
returned from Hatteras and it is very quiet and remote. There
are no fast food restaurants, even grocery stores are hard to
find. Did you find anywhere to go horseback riding? Please let me
know. I will be going in July with 6 teenagers, and this seems
to be one activity they all agree they want to do! Any help
would be greatly appreciated!! Category: Places to Stay As far as the crabbing goes we have had some luck at times on the bridge on the way back into Collington
Harbo. Its the right turn right after the Wright Memorial a couple miles back. Make sure that you are there while the
tide is moving in or out seems like the best time. When the tide ebs action
drops off. Last year caught about 2 dozen keepers in about two hours. Yes I have been coming to Rodanthe for like 12 ears now. I highly recommend
the Rodanthe Pier for fishing, I have never gone home
disappointed. Catches will vary from year to year.... But the action is always good.
Well worth my money. I just moved here from NJ me and my wife love to go crabbing.
I wanted to know if there is any where close by to go crabbing. Hi, I am interested in going crabbing and clamming in the
Beaufort County...Can anyone tell me where a good place to go?
It would be greatly appreciated it...I would also like to know
where we can get our salt water fishing license at too.. I will be in kill devil hills the first week in may. I
purchased some small crab traps and was wondering if I have to
have a license to use them. They attach to a fishing line and
then it folds up when pulling in. Is there a better place than
others. i will be renting a house right on the oceanfront.
Thanks in advance for all your help. Shawn Have you found a place to have your senior week yet? i need some help also Hello Does anyone know if there is a vacation rental company out there
who would Happy to read the post about not wanting a boardwalk on Outer
Banks, the Messages posted in 2006 were posted in another system and are unfortunately not
available. Please feel free to post here for all messages beginning 12/1/2006 I'm 15 years old and have been going to Duck on the OBX about
every summer of my life. I have been there as a little kid, and
as a teenager and have never been bored. There are a lot of
water sports to do, shopping, ect...but the best part is just
being on the beach for most of the day because the beach there
is so great, you dont need a board walk to have fun. That would
just make it crowded, and that is the last thing we would want
to do to the banks! I really have nothing to say, just thought it was cool that
our names were the same. Kelly M. Halleman. I am trying to find out where we can camp out and ride our
horses on the beach. Please send me this information if you can. thank you I was looking in the 2004 questions and could not find the
answer someone asked so I will ask again. We are traveling from
Columbus Ohio to the OBX in early June. Which route is the
fastest and least stressfull? We will be pulling a small trailer
also. We are leaning towards taking I-77 to Winston Salem where
we will stop over. Then next day going on past Raleigh and get
on US 64 straight into the Outerbanks. (This is the route AAA
gave us). I know traffic will be bad closer we get to the OBX
but this is true from either direction. The other route would be
I-70 out of Columbus to US 19 to I-68 to I-81 to I-66 to US 17
to I-95. This route avoids tolls and D.C. traffic. From here
take I-95 into Richmond for a stop over then traveling on down
the coast I-64 to I-664 on down to 168 then 158 to Highway 12 in
the Outer banks. I hear the first way down 77 is longer but when
you hit the costal traffic going the other way on the weekend it
is going to take you just as long waiting in the traffic. We
also hear the roads are far less steep going down 77 and the
drive is much nicer. We would like to hear from people who have
driven both, thanks! To Josh Sharp. Sound Feet Shoes still has positions for the
summer. Send your resume at soundfeet.com I am a 21 yr old college student from maryland and will be
spending the 2005 summer living in the outerbanks with 3 other
friends. I was wondering what the best jobs in the area would be
and where I can make the most money. I was interested in
cocktailing or something to that effect. I have many years of
experience waitressing, cocktailing and some bartending
experience. Any info would be greatly appreciated! hello my name is Heather and i saw you had written in the
travelogue that your son wanted to go to the outerbanks for
senior week last year well a couple of my friends and i want to
go this year and i was wondering if you found a place that rents
to seniors in high school Hi, We will be traveling from Wisconsin this summer ( 2005)
on what I hope will be the first of may trips to the Outer
Banks. I was wondering if anyone could help me decide which of
the four national parks ot stay at. All I have is the NPS
descrption to go by, which is a start, but is much better to have
someone who has been there, give you the scoop. I have two
teenage boys who love to fish, swim and boggie board or surf,
any help would be most helpful Is the Outter Banks happening in mid August? Four men on
vacation looking for women. Help us out. i have been to obx many of times in my life and i can fuckin
stand it. there is really nuthing to do you get sun burnt. i
love the ocean but i would love to be at mrytle beach instead.
so dont go to nags head or the obx go to mrytle and plus i own a
hotel down there so give me a call 252-845-5652 ext. 2564 My family and I will be traveling to the outer banks from
Columbus ohio. I would like to know the quickest route and/or
safest. I hear driving I-95 south is such a dangerous stretch of
road --- it makes me worry. Any way this will be our first trip.
We have never been to the ocean...Any comments or advice from
ohio travelers would be really welcome....Thanks! Looking for a good seafood buffet in OBX? Try Carolina's on
beach road near MP6. Awesome meal for a decent price. I think
this was the first time a went to a seafood buffet where they
didn't run out of crabs legs! They had Mahi Mahi, tuna, shark
and a great set-up. You know your at the right place when they
lay down a paper table cover and put a huge empty bowl on the
table. Roll of paper towels to boot. The waitress was very kind
too. She delivered a basket of steamed clams to our table, which
were kind of tough. When I thanked her for them, but declined
eating anymore, she went back and got the smallest clams they
had and returned to our table with them, saying "Try these, they
might be a little better". That's service! DON'T go to the
Western Sizzler on 12 if you see a seafood buffet on their sign.
They are still learning. BTW - The Wharf Restaurant everyone has
raved about in the past is unfortunately permanently closed. I
understand the owner became ill and sold the property to a real
estate agent for building homes. We were shocked when we found
that out. Didn't try Jimmy's Seafood Buffet. There is something
wrong with enticing customers by giving away $100 daily. Went to
Georges Junction and they surprised us with "Reservations
required" on a Wednesday afternoon at 4:30pm! Many customers
were turned away while we were there and it didn't look that
great anyway. Good luck and have fun! My family is going to the OBX on July 24. Our son, who is 19
and a sophomore in college-wants to know if there are summer
jobs still available there...where is the best cheap place to
live if there are any jobs...He will have to return to college
Sept. 4, so he can only work for 6 weeks or so. DO you know of
anything???? The National Park at Ocacroke is the best!! where can i ride my personal atv on the outter banks & also
camp A friend is looking for a place to stay in South Nagshead,
and if I recall there is a very nice little spot that I think is
on Virginia Dare, somewhere bet. mile post 2-4? (but I'm not
sure). It is not a beachfront property, but patrons can simply
cross Virginia Dare to a beach access path. Does anyone know the
name? Thanks. I have been all over the internet looking for a place to rent
for a week in the kitty hawk/nags head area that rents to
college students. We are just looking for a place to sleep after
spending a day at the beach! I need help finding a rental house
or large enough hotel to accomodate 4-6 people. i believe it is called the pelican isle, we had a small
wedding there and the room they gave to us was fantastic. it is
nags head lol no comment really just you and I sharing the same first
and last name....sorry just found it funny Hi, some of my friends and i are looking for a place to stay
this summer on the outer banks. we are college students and will
be working most of our free time this summer. we will take
almost anything, if you have any information please let me know.
(2004) HI, I am a senior in college and have been asked to stay in
Nags Head for the summer with some freinds. I need a job and I
was wondering if anyone knew of any jobs in the area. Just about
anything will do. Thanx Josharp I am a good carpenter and builder looking for a resort job. we are planning a trip to the outer banks around the 4or5th
of may.we were wondering about the ferry service do we need
reservations? the map were looking at says a month advance
notice??thank you I'm am very interested in anything to do with the general
area, fishing, claming shrimping, things to do, restaurants,
golf, travel tips......I have many of the same questions about
fishing as other asked but where do I find your response to
them? thanks you ....Headed your way in august thanks I am looking for summer employment in the OBX area and was
wondering if anyone can send me information on any openings. I
will be looking for summer employment to save for school and
will be moving back to N.C. just before this summer so a job in
the OBX would be perfect, not only the chance to save for school
but if anybody has ever been to the OBX they know that is the
best place to vacation in N.C. so it would be awesome to also
work their during the summer. Please post any information URLs
or anything to help me in my search -Thankyou- jp cottages is a home away from home -just want to say thank
you for all the years of fun and family the fullers ohio I am wondering if anyone has beach condition information for
this year 2004? We just started going to the OBX the past couple
of years and there has been some beach erosion both times we
went and we were wondering if there was a better part of the
beach this year or not? We typically stay near Kill Devil Hills
or Nags Head but were also interested in the conditions in South
Nags Head. I am going to the Outer Banks for the third time this year.
We stay for two weeks every other year and the experience is in
a word, remarkable. This year we hope to have 35 family members
there and look forward to celebrating my mother-in-law's 80th
birthday. My in-laws have been going to the Outer Banks for 35
years and I have heard too many stories to tell here. Anyone in
search of a relaxing, family oriented, beautiful vacation spot
should go there and see why James Taylor singing "Carolina in My
Mind" in February in Pittsburgh can make a 36 year old
Pittsburgher sit back, smile, and dream of salt air, the warm
sun, and a cold beer. You really have to see, hear, and smell it
to believe it. The times of our lives best friends are at the fishing
unlimited pier--catching 3 puppy drum at once or sitting at
happy hour just talking--helping a friend net a big one or last
fall a tire or bid board or siding off of someone cottage--there
is no place like the fishing unlimited family outer banks--this

We are in the heart of Amish country. Located in Southern
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Our neighbors are Amish. Nothing
but fields. Short drive(15min.) to antiques, tourist area,
amusement parks, and huge outlet shopping. Would love to trade
homes for Christmas holiday or June vacation. A girlfriend of mine lives in Va....wants to get married at
the Outer Banks. Does anyone have any suggestions for a small,
intimate wedding -keeping the cost down. Thanks a bunch! Melanie I am relocating to the Outer Banks in December of 2003. I
would welcome any suggestions on job opportunities... I am
currently living in England and my online job search has not
been very successful. Thanks. Cheers! My husband & I are looking to go to the Outer BAnks for
Thanksgiving. Is there anything open this year after the
hurricane. How about places to stay for a few nights? Any info
would be appreciated. Nags Head Realty has Ocean front townhouses called the
Windjammer right in Nags Head. They have wonderful ocean views
and have everything you need. I own one of the units but we are
closed for the season. Some of the others are open. You can find
Nags Head Realty on the web. We just came back from the OBX already we can't wait until
next time! Great place to stay, reasonable and clean, Falcon
Motel in Buxton and just across the road is a great place to eat
(esp. Breakfast) Diamond Shoals, just up in the road in Avon is
the Mad Crabber and if you venture over to Ocracoke be sure to
eat at the Jolly Roger...can't be beat! Hi, I started going to the Outerbanks about 10 - 12 years
ago. about 1991-92. We were in a group of 24 mainly everyone was
family although a few were friends. We rented 2 homes in Carolla,
(Whaleshead beach). I must say that Whaleshead beach was "THE
NICEST" beach on the island. In our opinion. I have to add that
ALL the beaches on the island are the best. We like to move
around from Carolla to Nagshead. Its all #1 to us. I will live
there one day! As I said, There were alot of us and everyone did
their own thing. Parasailing, shopping, canoeing, Boogie
boarding, digging in the sand, getting up early to watch the
sunrise, sitting on top of a sand dune Watching the sunset,
watching the dolphins every morning and evening, being with true
friends and family, my favorite hanging out on the beach. The
restaurants on the Island are very simular. They all from what I
have experianced are really good. I do make sure when I go to
the Island I stop in at the Jolly Roger restaurant. I think its
the best, and the people are very friendly. If you go there you
will not be sorry. Another of my favorite things that happenes
every time you go onto the Island is, The great smell of the
ocean, the air just comes over you and puts you in a peaceful
serine feeling and it lasts however long you are there. I want to let everyone know what a friendly wonderful place
me and my husband found on the outer banks! If you are planning
a family vacation, this is the best place. White beaches and
friendly locals added to an already grand adventure for us. Our
home through Village Realty provided great comforts, including a
computer...yeah!! The best resturant by far was Carolina Seafood
in Kill Devil Hills. Our waitress was Denise, who needs to
rethink her calling in life! Not only was the food great, but
our service was wonderful! Denise can sure keep our glasses
fulland our tummys happy, but she also gave us great a comic
show with each refill, plate pick up, bowling dumping, and crabs
delievery! She was jonny on the spot for all our needs and also
with her jokes and the way she made us feel like close friends.
I only can say one bad thing about our trip to carolina seafood
and that is being shocked at what people leave for a tip. I was
able to observe a small tip on a table felt by the last tentants.
We left more, not for thegreat service and great food but also
because we felt sorry for our waitress who gave these people the
same service but felt that five dollars was good enough for her.
Remember tipping for these people means a pay check! Tip like
you should or dont eat out! 15% of a check is what you should
leave, not 5%. My Dad grew up in Boston and New Bedford near the water. As a
child, no matter how little we had, my father would figure out a
way to go to Cape Cod. I was in Nirvana. As the Cape got
overdeveloped and we moved to the Baltimore area I assumed there
would never be a repeat of those seashore sensations (notice I
didn't use the word beach....Atlantic City is a beach but a
seashore?). Then returning from Chicago in the mid-70's my
parents told me about a place called Duck, NC. I went down in
October 1978 and have been going back ever since. I do not need
to convey my memories because they have all been said by others
here. I am humbled and in envy of what I am reading. However if
you will permit me to convey briefly an
experience.................I work in a government agency and an
elderly gentleman requested my assistance. It was Summer 2000
and I had just returned from 2 weeks in Salvo,Hatteras. This
gentleman had a t-shirt on which depicted Outer Banks
lighthouses so I asked him how often he traveled there. "Never"
he gruffly said...his daughter had sent him the shirt. He did
tell me however that he had been there once. During World War 2
the oil tanker he was a crewmember on had been torpedoed and
sunk off Hatteras. Though half the crew perished he had been
rescued. Listening to him describe the incident made you feel
like you were there on the ship. I asked him the ship's name and
then went back to my office to check my "Graveyard of the
Atlantic" map. There it was...his ship. I showed him the map and
he beamed like a child and seemed to be lost momentarily. I
stood there in awe of this coincidence. I pray the Outer Banks,
especially Hatteras and Ocracoke don't go the way of Cape Cod. BEGINNING A TRADITIONAL FAMILY GET-TO-GETHER...everyone is
available in APRIL/MAY 2004, AND WANTS TO DO THE OUTER BANKS... I am looking for a place to ride dirt bikes and atv at NAgs...please
help!!] Dave P I am planning a vaction in Corolla and would like to know the
names of the closest resturants and where I can rent bikes? We are staying in Duck and would like to travel to Okracoke
and also see the Hatteras Lighthouse. What is the best way to
get there and how early in the morning should we leave. Also any
tips on what to do down there would be appreciated. We are planning a trip to the outer banks, Rodanthe area and
was wondering which route is faster from South Florida (I-95)? I am coming to the Outerbanks July 4 thru the 12 for our
first family vacation since having a child in November. We are
renting a house in Avon, on Due East Drive. Could anyone tell me
the names of some resturants or shops in the area, is there a
grocery store near by, or will we have to do all of the shopping
in Nags Head. Also, if anyone knows of any cool shops please let
me know, even if they are on another island. Also, are there any
bike rental shops that have bikes with baby seats? Our little
girl will be 7 months old then, and I would realy like to take
her out on a little bike ride. Thanks!! English - Loved the Cedar Island ferry ride to Ocracoke. May 24 i am traveling to hatteras w/ 2 friends(we are 16 and
17) and a friends family and we are really excited but we want
to know what there is to do for teenagers and where to find hot
guys! Please e-mail me if u have any ideas!! thanks a bunch! where is the best place on ocracoke island to rent bicycles?
how about those things that carry baby seats behing? During the week of May 24, 2003 I will be staying at the
Outerbanks of North Caroline. We will be way up north in the
town of Corolla. I understand that four wheel drive vehicals are
aloud to go on the beach. My question is am I allow to take my
enduro bike on the beach? Craig McEvoy What is the most interesting (for adults and kids under 13)
way to drive and nice, inexpensive (not camping) places to stay
from Chicago to the Outer Banks, but doesn't take us too out of
the way? Any suggestions for nice, but inexpensive but
interesting places (not camping) to stay with kids for 10 days
or 2 weeks during middle July or Aug. would also be greatly
appreciated. Thank you very much! My boyfriend has been transferred with Sprint to Dare County.
We are both looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom Condo, Apartment or
House in a good neighborhood. We would prefer to be on the
Island. He is now residing in a camper temporarily until we find
something inexpensive. Meanwhile, as a single mother, my
finances are limited and my child of 7 years of age and I would
like to find an inexpensive place to live. I work with the Pitt
County School System and will be transferring to Dare County. We
are looking for an apt/condo that is well within our means.
Please send me any information that you can provide. Thank you. My wife and I are in our mid fifties and would enjoy working
this summer in the Nags Head area. We are looking for affordable
housing for the duration of our visit. Thanks. John Please tell me about the island in the Pat Conroy book The
River is Wide One of our Corporate Clients has asked me to locate large
(8,000 and up in attendance) public events in the Outer Banks
and Hilton Head area. They are looking for a 10x10 booth space
in high traffic to promote their Credit Card business. Since
your event listings are not available on the internet at this
time, is it possible to fax a list? My fax number is
301-990-8973. Or, you can email the information to me. I know
your area does not desire a lot of commercialization, but there
must be some large Fairs and Festivals taking place this Spring,
Summer and Fall. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hope Morton We are in the process of planning a trip to the Outer Banks.
We are looking for a cottage that will rent to group that is not
family, graduate students age 22-27. Any info? We have a beautiful 7000 sq. ft. home w/4 bedrooms, pool and
tennis courts located in Alpharetta, a lovely suburb of Atlanta,
GA. Convenient to downtown, the best shopping, restaurants,
cultural events and nightlife the city has to offer. We would
like to trade for a beach house on the Outer Banks one week
(Thurs.-Wed.) anytime late July 2003 or August. . We had dinner(?) at GEorges. It was by far the worst
resturant that I have frequented. It was inedible!!!They charged
approximately $20 per person for what proved tobe truely awful.
The only edible food was the salad.Even after I complained, I
received a cursury smile and nosatisfaction from the manager on
site. The fried chickenwas cold and dry. The she crab soup was
flour and water with fake crab. The vegetables were cold and
tastelessEven the macaroni and cheese was tasteless!!! The
turkey was sliced deli. I was afraid to try any of the fishes
available as they look like they had been sitting out for days.
I have eaten in resturrantsin many areas of the country and have
never felt compelled to complain prior to this. I even enjoy
fast foods on occassion. But this meal did not even come up to
the standards of the worst fast food resturant. Let the buyer
beware. My wife and I are coming to the Avon area for the first time
starting Sept. 14. We are staying at the Suncatcher cottage that
we rented through Outer Beaches Realty(#022). Does anyone know
anything about that particular cottage? Where are the best
places to find the best sea shells? Where is the best fishing
areas in Avon? We are very excited. Hopefully, we will find it
nice and peaceful and relaxing. We go to Florida all of the
time. We hope this turns out nicer because it is closer to our
Ohio home. Does anyone have any suggestions for must sees, good
shops or good restaurants in that area? Thanks for helping us
first-timers out. Christian family 2 adults, 4 kids looking for nice
reasonable, clean lodging for week of Aug. 26-31, 2002. Access
to pool/hot tub for when hubby & son goes fishing. Can anyone tell me about the "Waterfall Park" located in
Rodanthe? I am staying in North Waves this summer and my cottage
says that we are in walking distance to the park? 06/22/99 My family and I just got back from our first trip to
the Outer Banks. We had a good time and plan to go back again
next year. I would've said we had a great time, but it was in
the sixties and rained most of the week. We stayed in Southern
Shores and had a nice house on the beach. We hit most of the
"tourist spots" on the trip and found most of them worthwhile.
For anyone really interested in nature, I would definitely
recommend visiting Nags Head Woods (but wear plenty of bug
spray). It was really neat. I also went to Pea Island but the
biting flies were just too much (even with a ton of bug spray).
It would probably be great at any time of the year but summer.
We were looking forward to the Elizabethan Gardens, but were
disappointed. Very little was in bloom, I guess we maybe went at
a bad time of the year. We ate at Tortuga's Lie and Rundown Cafe
based upon recommendations listed here. My wife was a little
tentative at first, (she is usually reluctant to try any
different types of foods). We were both very impressed with both
places. The food, prices, and atmosphere were great. I
personally am not into those plain old boring family style
restaurants. We also had our one and a half year old daughter
with us, so we didn't want to try any place too fancy. I would
recommend the coco loco chicken at Tortuga's and the Rundown
soup and Jerk chicken were great at Rundown cafe. We also ate at
Bad Barracuda's - I would rate this place average at best for
food and about the same for service. Mako Mike's was our last
stop for dinner. It was decorated really neat, (propellors for
fans, bright colors, etc.), and the food was decent, but not
great. I would recommend this place to someone who wants a
general steak, burger, pizza, pasta place or to anyone who has
kids. As I said we had a good time overall and are planning on
going back next year (with hopefully more sun). My wife and I have been going to Buxton for 12 years. Five
years ago we realized that to really enjoy OBX you need a 4
wheel drive vehicle. Driving on the beach (especially the
"Point") is fun. Four wheel drive allows you to access the best
beaches. South beach between Buxton and Frisco is especially
good because the surf is relatively calm which makes for good
swimming. The Ocracoke beaches are also very good. There has
been a lot of beach erosion north of the lighthouse and the
south beach is much wider now. My husband and I are from the Pittsburgh, PA area and have
been travelling to the Outer Banks for 20 years. He took me
there when we first met. At that time there were hardly any
activities except relaxing and fishing which we both love. Our
first year we stayed in a tent at the Camp Ground by the
Hatteras Light House. It cost us $4.00 a day and I can honestly
say it was one of best vacations ever. I can remember going to
Oden's to get our kerosene. Oden's was definately not the store
that it is today. I felt sad when I saw it after it was
remodeled. The old Oden's had character and an appearance that
belonged on the Outer Banks. I've alway's enjoyed stopping at
the Pirate's Chest. One day a week we always take the ferry over
to Okracoke Island to spend the day.Since then, when we visit we
have now upgraded ourselves to a cottage. We love to stay around
the Avon or Buxton area. We prefer this area because we like to
relax, we love the sound and it's not as busy as Kitty Hawk/Kill
Devil Hills area. Becuase of family health problems, we have
been unable to visit for the past four years and we both miss it
terribly. We might try to visit this year either the week of
July 11 or July 18,and I was wondering if anyone knew if there
were any cottages available in the Avon or Buxton area for these
weeks. I know most cottages are probably booked by now, but
because of being uncertain if we will be able to come we haven't
made any reservations. There will be just the two of us, so we
won't need a large place. We also prefer staying on the
Soundfront. I always tell my husband, if someone told me I just
won a vacation to anywhere in the world, I would definately pick
the Outer Banks. To me there is no other place like it in the
world. Can't wait to come back. When you want to just pack a small suitcase and leave all
other worldly possessions behind and RUN AWAY FROM EVERYTHING
AND NEVER COME BACK!!!! I WOULD LIKE TO TELL EVERYONE WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE YOU HAVE IN
THE OUTER BANKS. ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND I TOOK MY FAMILY TO THE
OUTER BANKS, WE STAYED IN RONDANTHE AND ON SATURDAY MORNING WE
DECIDED THAT WE WOULD TAKE THE FERRY OVER TO OCOACROKE ISLAND.
WE ALL CRAMMED INTO MY JEEP AND LEFT. WE HAD NOT GOTTEN OUT OF
TOWN BUT ABOUT 5 MILES AND I SAW MY ALTERNATOR LIGHT HAD COME
ON. WE KEPT GOING NOT WANTING TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE,
AND I THOUGHT WE COULD MAKE IT TO AVON. AS WE GOT TO AVON THE
BATTERY WAS DRAINED AND THE CAR WAS SPUTTERING. I LOOKED AHEAD
AND SAW A CHEVRON SIGN ON THE RIGHT AND DECIDED TO TRY TO MAKE
IT THERE. AS I TURNED INTO THEIR STORE YARD THE CAR DIED. I WENT
INSIDE THE CHEVRON STATION WHICH IS ACTUALLY A DRIVE THROUGH
BEVERAGE STORE AND ASKED THE LADY INSIDE WOULD SHE CALL A TOW
TRUCK FOR ME. SHE WAS NICE ENOUGH TO LET ME USE HER PHONE AND
WAS VERY HELPFUL ABOUT WHO TO CALL. WHILE WAITING FOR THE TOW
TRUCK I DECIDED TO GO BACK INSIDE AND ASK IF SHE WOULD CALL A
TAXI TO GET MY CHILDREN AND MOTHER IN LAW BACK TO WHERE WE WERE
STAYING, ABOUT 15 MILES. SHE TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST A WHOLE
LOT AND THEN TOLD US TO TAKE HER CAR. N0W THIS LADY HAD NEVER
SEEN ME BEFORE IN HER LIFE BUT TURNED OVER HER CAR KEYS TO US.
TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT THE TOW TRUCK CAME AND PICKED ME UP
AND IN ABOUT 3 HRS HAD ME ON THE ROAD AGAIN. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT
WE WOULD HAVE DONE IF NOT FOR THE KINDNESS OF THIS LADY AND HER
HUSBAND. I AM ASKING EVERYONE THAT I CAN WHEN IN THE OUTER BANKS
STOP IN AND SEE THESE FOLKS, THEIR GAS IS AS CHEEP AS I HAVE
SEEN IN THE AREA. SHOULD YOU NEED ANY TYPE OF BEVERAGE YOU WOULD
BE ABLE TO FIND THAT THERE ALSO. THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PEOPLE
LIKE THESE AND I URGE EVERYONE THAT CAN TO SUPPORT THEM. WITH A
GRATEFUL HEART PHILLIP & MARIE HINNANT 1730 COUNTRY CLUB RD.
ROCKY MT. N.C. 27804 Hi. I'm looking for some information and would be happy to
hear from anyone to everyone. My fiancee and I are going to be
staying at the Silver Sands Motel in Nags Head from July 9-July
16 for our first vacation in the Outer Banks. I have read all of
the travelogues and found them very informative. I am wondering
if anyone who's been down to the Outer Banks could e-mail me
about places to eat, where it doesn't cost a fortune, but that
you get good food for reasonable prices. Since I've scanned and
read the travelogue pages, The Wharf, Down Under,The Carolina
seafood buffet, and some other places(can't remember all the
names), got realy high marks on must go to, good food, good
prices, but I didn't see recommendations for places to go for
breakfast. I would really appreciate any feedback that anyone
can e-mail me concerning the prices and quality and quantity of
food of the restaurants/pubs/deli, etc., for breakfast, lunch,
and dinner. It doesn't have to be just in the Nags Head
area, because we hope to go to other towns/beaches down the Outer
Banks, such as Rodanthe, Buxton, etc. To whoever started this
page I would like to thank her/him/they. This page is very
informative, you hear about the different places to stay on the
Outer Banks that you might not have know about, restaurants;
which are evaluated by personal opinion and experience. I think
the best thing is that you get to read about experiences that
other people have had, good and bad. This is a very honest page.
So to the creator and everyone who has added their own
experiences thank you. Karen Just got back from Buxton....lovely house on the beach with
terrific view of lighthouse. We've been visiting this area and
Kitty Hawk for more than 30 years and will miss the present
views of the lighthouse from the beach, but we fully support the
relocation because we'd rather miss the view than the lighthouse
itself. Very interesting this time watching the preparation for
the move....thanks to Cheryl and Bruce Roberts for e-mailing us
so much info and pictures that set the stage for a greater
understanding of what's going on there. Weather was BAD most of
the week with that low sitting off the coast...but the visit was
interesting nontheless. Great meals at the Pilot House and
Breakwater (Wow, that "Cowboy Steak"). Real good lunch at the
Something Else Cafe. Fishing lousy on the beach--but we caught a
few sea bass one morning on Miss Hatteras. We have been vacationing the OB for the last 5-6 years. the
best. Got all the best places to eat down--let us suggest The
Mad Crabber in Avon, and The Wharf @ MP 9 1/2 up Kill Devil
Hills way. A must for us each year. We got married this year at
the Wright Brothers National Monument. Stayed at our usual
location--Rodanthe. We like being in the middle of it all---half
way between Hatteras and Nags Head. Ocracoke is a fun day trip.
Rented a plane for a few hours and flew the Banks. Totally
scenic. I offered to take the witnesses that we grabbed for our
wedding up for a ride. They loved it. Landed at Hatteras
Mitchell and First Flght. Flight originated from Dare Co. Munic.
Anybody want to know Pro's and Con's of the banks...dont'
hesitate to e-mail. We've got it down pat! I've been visiting OBX since 1990--I live in central PA so it
can be quite a trek for my best friend and me, but well worth
the tired backs and sore behinds once we cross the Wright
Memorial Bridge.. I've never visited a place that puts me at
peace the way the banks do--I always feel that I'm coming home.
One of these trips, I just won"t come back to PA,even tho I love
it here, too. If you're looking for clean quiet beaches (even on
the 4th of July!!), friendly people, and incredilble food, ther's
no place better. WE tend to go towards the end ofSeptember--it's
even more quiet, the water is still warm, and there's no waiting
to be seated at restaurants. So for a busy, stressed out trauma
nurse and her best friend, this is heaven on earth. Everyone
enjoy and have a great summer!!!!!! I'm 14 and I've been going to Duck, NC for as long as I can
remember with my cousins. It is a small residencial town near
Kitty Hawk. Its been a really great experience for me, and one
time something really cool happened! I was thinking to how small
and dinky Duck is, when suddenly, I spotted two friends from my
school. Turns out I'm not the only one that goes to OBX!! I had my first experience of cape hatteras when i was sixteen
and loved every minute of it! I have been back to the Outer
banks twice since then once in 1997 and 1998 and now we are
embarking on our third year- 1999- of "Beach trip 1999" third
anniversary! We cannot wait to come back. I will never forget
the serene sea shores and the laidback island lifestyle! The
little shops like the island art gallery and the Food Lion with
it's great prices on Beer and coolers! We fish off of the pier
eat great seafood at the Froggy dog and bask on the beaches! In
1997 we rented a house with a bunch of friends and in 1998 and
this year 1999 we will rent with our family. It is the nicest
vacation we have ever had! We have found some really nice
treasures on hatteras and normally stay in avon, frisco, or
buxton. Also the upper outer banks is great with the Weeping
radish and the shops of Nags Head! we cannot wait until May
22nd! All I can say is relax, have a beer get a great tan, and
take in some sun and fun of the waves lapping at your feet!
Holly Koegler an Outer Banks Lover for years! We are still
waiting to catch that "Big Drum" ENJOY! We spent our summer 98' vacation on the Outer Banks. This was
our first trip, but I hope not our last. The ferry road to
Oracoke was relaxing, but very long if you have small children
(we have a 1 year old). So make sure you bring lots of
entertainment and extra bottles. When we arrived on the island
we had lunch at Howard's. First, let me tell you, we are from
the mid-west and my husband has tried chili from all over. But
he had the best at Howard's! We ate out on the deck and enjoyed
the afternoon. We also ate at the Down Under. The food was good,
but not as good as I expected. But still worth the stop, enjoy
the view! We did several things while on the islands but the
best is just beach lounging. Just go and relax. Kick up your
heels take a deep breath and learn to enjoy life again. THE DELECTABLE DISH CATERING by KIMBERLY MCDANEL If you are
looking for a caterer on the Outer Banks, I *highly* recommend
Kimberly McDanel. Kimberly just catered my wedding reception and
"farewell brunch" and I could not have been more pleased. The
food was absolutely amazing!! People commented to me all weekend
long how wonderful everything was from the cocktail hour hor
d'ouvres, to the dinner, to the fruit salad the next morning. In
addition to being delicious, everything looked absolutely
beautiful! Kimberly has an extremely artistic eye, and her
presentation was gorgeous! Another wonderful thing about
Kimberly is that I felt that she enjoyed the planning of our
wedding as much as we did. She was always super enthusiastic and
had many many wonderful ideas for us to think about. She added
so many special touches that they are impossible to count, but
one example is the "Midnight Snack" she left for my husband and
I in our refrigerator for after the reception. It was a box
filled with fruit, crackers, cheese, cookies, and a beautiful
poem on love and marriage. Kimberly made planning long-distance
a breeze and her professionalism and enthusiasm put us at ease
throughtout the entire process. I recommend Kimberly and the
Delectable Dish without hesitation and welcome anyone to email
me for contact information or additional details. Sincerely,
Melinda Roper 4/23/99 - We are planning our second trip to the Outer Banks,
early August - prime time. We will be with family and friends
hoping to enjoy great weather and all the area has to offer. We
have stayed in Salvo and find it very peaceful, off the beaten
path. When ever I go to the beach I am immediately drawn to the
ocean. I have to see, hear and feel it crashing on my legs. It
is such a healing experience, washing away all of the stresses
of everyday life. Since this will only be our second visit, we
plan to take the ferry to Ocracoke Island and soak up all the
heritage, all do lots of fishing (the Avon Peir and the Point at
Hatteras). If anyone knows of a good charter let us know. Happy
vacationing!! Okay, there are certain places you have to go for certain
things to eat on the Outer Banks. HURRICANE MO'S for the best
steamed oysters ever (beer and wine only)! CAPT'N FRANKS for the
best hot dogs! CLARA'S for the absolute best ever she-crab soup!
DAIRY MART for the best hamburger you will ever put in your
mouth (outside dining only!) ELIZABETH'S CAFE all around yummy!
For great tuna taco's, it's gotta be GOOMBAY'S. JOHN'S DRIVE IN
for tuna boats with fried okra and don't forget the peanut
butter milkshakes (outside dining only!) THE OASIS: you have to
go get the BELLRINGERS! Raw oyster on a saltine cracker with
horseradish, hot sauce and a jalapeno; a buck a piece. Your
nasal passages will be clear for weeks. My record is six. If
Mark makes them; I can only do three. THAI ROOM for the sauteed
soft shells. We lived on the Outer Banks for nearly 10 years but
go back at least twice a year. Just got back from our 11 days
during Easter 99. Had a wonde! rful time My family and I vacationed in Duck last summer and rented a
beach house. It was the most wonderful vacation I can ever
remember having. I brought my two sons to see the ocean for the
first time. The beach house was able to house all 20 of us
comfortably as it had 3 and a half baths and 5 bedrooms. I've
been to the outer banks before to visit my sister, but this was
our first opportunity to have us all together. I definitely
recommend renting a beach house and visiting the area. The food
is great and the people are friendly. My fiance and I are
considering on honeymooning there next summer. Cindy We have a darling 2 year old boy.The first time he saw the
ocean. It could never be more memorable. My Mom has cancer and my
wife just had surgery. It was the greatest time of ourlives.Pray
to God we can come back! hi i'm 13 and the first time i went to nagshead was in the
summer of 1998!We went in the first week of august and stayed
there for a week!Although we went in hurricane season we still
had a great time!I went with my aunt and her family and my
grandma,uncle and cousin!We had a blast!We stayed in a beach
house right outside of kitty hawk!It was great there was
shopping, movies, golf and great resturants! We viseted the cape
hatterus light house (which is beautiful) and jocky ridge (which
is a must ).There was hang gliding and wind surfing and much
more!No matter what age you or your family is nags head is an
exellent place to visit! My husband and I decided to come to the Outer Banks for our
honeymoon on July 25, 1998 and we were not disappointed. This
was the beginning of our lives together, and believe me, it was
a wonderful start. We loved our vacation so much and we are so
glad that this was our choice for our honeymoon. We were able to
relax from our hectic wedding plans and just enjoy each others'
company in a very peaceful environment. We stayed in the Hot Tub
Room at the John Yancey Hotel (Clairion Inn, I believe). It was
a very nice hotel and the jacuzzi was nice. We ate at some
wonderful restaurants including Western Sizzling and our daily
favorite was Dairy Queen!!! We received a lot of food for our
money at Western Sizzling's seafood buffet. The food was
delicious. We love the fact that there are Dairy Queen
restaurants located every couple of miles down the strip!! We
were able to visit a few lighthouses (Bodie Island and Cape
Hatteras) during our stay also. The beach was wonderful and we
came home with wonderful tans. We took nightly strolls on the
beach and woke up early to search for seashells. Unfortunately,
we did not have much luck in the seashell department. One
morning as we watched the sunrise, we saw porpoises jumping in
the water. They were beautiful!! Jockey's Ridge was quite a
climb, but was well worth it. The view was great and we can't
wait to climb it again. We are planning another trip in May 1999
with another couple and are really looking forward to our visit.
We have been reading comments from other visitors to get some
ideas on activities to do the last week in May. We already know
that the Outer Banks will be a vacation spot for us every year!!
For the last six years we have taken a week to relax at the
Outer Banks. After a twelve hour drive we spend the first night
at Nags Head in a motel on the sea. We let out a big sigh,
breathe in that wonderous air, a mild tang of ocean air spiced
with the fragrance of cooking and pines. We unpack, walk on the
smooth warm sand, (our favorite time is the early Fall) and gaze
out to sea, the sun and sky reflecting colors on the ocean.
After a delicious dinner, we again walk the beach, the familiar
roar and hissing of the waves as they relentlesslyt turn on
themselves until they spread themselves prostrate over the
gentle sloping sand, with a gentle hiss and tinkling of broken
shells and sand fall into one another. Off to bed where we
quickly doze off. the best summer fishing i ever had was on the avalong pier
fourth of july week - 1992 - i caught 2- citation king
mackerels, 1 citation cobia. my husband also caught a citation
cobia that week. it was absolutely the best ever, then i got
pregnant and had a little boy - now i don't get to fish as much,
but we visit at least 2 weeks every summer and 1 week in the
fall - my child is 5 - and he is an absolute fishing fanatic,
lucky for me and my husband - god only knows what would happen
if he didn't love it! when i retire - the outerbanks is where i
want to be! i would like to be there now - but i have to have a
job. paulette Hello, 2-1-99 I stayed at the surf or sound realty in june of
'98 at the dolphin. The house was great except you were supposed
to be able to see the dolphins frolic in the surf and we
couldn't. It was only a block at the most away from us. I loved
to go down at night and stand there not knowing where or when
the waves would hit you. It is TOTAL darkness down there. In the
daytime you jump the waves which is also fantastique. I am 13 so
I stayed with my parents but believe me you have to go there...
You will never forget it..One thing you HAVE to have.. Central
air or a couple nights we didn't need it much..... Hello all, We've been coming to the Outer Banks since 1993
with the only regret being that I didn't act on my first urges
to visit here 25 years ago! For those of you coming here, just a
few things to help you enjoy your visit Dear Sirs, Note to the editor: If anyone would like info on the
