What is the closest Greyhound bus stop or what is the best way to get there from Baltimore without having to drive 3 hours from the airport. Is there a shuttle? My daughter may join us this year on vacation via a one-way ticket and then drive back with us. We will be staying in Corolla. Also, how do I see the answers to the questions some people have submitted on your webpage. Some were very interesting about fishing and best ways to travel from the North.
Thank you

Hi, you probably have lots of answers by now - but I just wanted to share that Kill Devil Hill or Nags Head have more things for teenagers to do. Remember, that the Outer Banks are actually several towns that are within miles of each other, so it will be easy to get to a different "town". The most removed are the north end which is Corolla, Duck, and Corova. The most southern end has Avon, Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe, Hatteras. Anything in the middle - which is Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head is centrally located. Hope this helps. Hope you enjoy OBX!

I am a responsible LEGAL 18 year college freshman who just wants to go to the beach with my suitemate and other friends. But the state of North Carolina doesn't want us too! Come on give the bored college kids a break. There is no reason we should be discriminated against because we still have our youth and want to have a little independence from our FAMILY!

We live in Pefferlaw Ontario, which is 1 hour north of Toronto, Ontario.
We have split-level house on a large lot with a river at the bottom. The
residential neighborhood is situated in the York Region Forest, and is a 5
minute drive from Lake Simcoe.

We are looking for a house on the coast, for July and August '08.

My family (6 adults and 2 toddlers or possibly extended family which will add 5 more adults)) have gone to Myrtle Beach for yrs and are looking for a change and thinking about the outer banks. While we have heard some good things, we have also heard that the currents are so bad in some areas that you can't get in the ocean, there is no where to go out to eat, water is too cold in June, etc. Any plusses or negatives you can give us would be appreciated. We would love a house with a pool or a nice condo.

I need a place to relax and grab a bit of peace and quiet. I've been the main care giver to a husband with MS, a mother with Alzheimer's (recently deceased) and an elderly father, and a wonderful teenage daughter! Can anyone recommend a quiet, safe, campground near the water that has camp sites that I can park near, since I have post-polio and walking is frequently a challenge. My daughter and I would like to relax, dream, read, and laugh for a few days in August. Thought somewhere on the outer banks might be a good location. Any suggestions would be welcome.

As far as the crabbing goes we have had some luck at times on the bridge on the way back into Collington Harbo. Its the right turn right after the Wright Memorial a couple miles back. Make sure that you are there while the tide is moving in or out seems like the best time. When the tide ebs action drops off. Last year caught about 2 dozen keepers in about two hours.

Good luck.

I'm 15 years old and have been going to Duck on the OBX about every summer of my life. I have been there as a little kid, and as a teenager and have never been bored. There are a lot of water sports to do, shopping, ect...but the best part is just being on the beach for most of the day because the beach there is so great, you dont need a board walk to have fun. That would just make it crowded, and that is the last thing we would want to do to the banks!

My family rented a great house on Beach Road in Kitty Hawk last summer from Wright Property Management. They were great! I highly recommend them. Our house was ready for check in exactly when they said it would be. The place was clean and neat when we arrived. I ordered the linen package when I made the reservation and all the sheets and towels were delivered before we arrived, and they were clean! I have no complaints about this rental company at all. All my future OBX rentals will be with WPM.

Outer Banks Brewing Co was a great find. It was more expensive than we expected, but, it was totally worth it. My best meal of the week. Curry tofu and veges was very flavorful with a kick. The fish and chips were excellent, plentiful and are served with homeade sauces. My Mahi with a vege compote of asparagus, artichoke, capers, fancy mushrooms in a yummy reduced sauce was awesome. Tasty mild ginger beer too.

I was looking in the 2004 questions and could not find the answer someone asked so I will ask again. We are traveling from Columbus Ohio to the OBX in early June. Which route is the fastest and least stressfull? We will be pulling a small trailer also. We are leaning towards taking I-77 to Winston Salem where we will stop over. Then next day going on past Raleigh and get on US 64 straight into the Outerbanks. (This is the route AAA gave us). I know traffic will be bad closer we get to the OBX but this is true from either direction. The other route would be I-70 out of Columbus to US 19 to I-68 to I-81 to I-66 to US 17 to I-95. This route avoids tolls and D.C. traffic. From here take I-95 into Richmond for a stop over then traveling on down the coast I-64 to I-664 on down to 168 then 158 to Highway 12 in the Outer banks. I hear the first way down 77 is longer but when you hit the costal traffic going the other way on the weekend it is going to take you just as long waiting in the traffic. We also hear the roads are far less steep going down 77 and the drive is much nicer. We would like to hear from people who have driven both, thanks!

Kate - I'm also 21 and live in corrolla during the summers(work at a bar here in ecu) thought i'd help you out and point you in the right direction from someone who runs in the same crowd. as far as cocktail waitresses we really dont have many places like that on the obx, but for night spots your best bets are quagmires, kelly's, port o cal, or the obx brewery(all located b/w mp 3-14). if u want to be in more of a club scene the only thing is the PIT(milepost 9) also a young crowd but bigest night is mug night. most summer college students like us take up a job bartending, serving or being a steamer/bar tender. bc most of the shifts go 4-11 allows us to surf and play all day then go to work but get off in plenty of time to still go out and party. good luck and see ya down there

In response to posts regarding crabbing in Avon, renting to high school kids & where did Nags Head get its name: If you want to go crabbing, rent a house on the soundside, pref. on a canal or the sound itself, or else you'll have to trespass on some other renter's or a "local's" property. ALL real estate agencies on Hatteras Island are on the lookout for and are cracking down harder every year on high schoolers trying to rent homes with a bunch of friends. Having worked for years with one of those rental agencies, I have seen (#1) a whole houseful of kids run out of a rental home in the wee hours of the morning by a property manager accompanied by an armed sheriff's deputy and (#2) seen what those kids did to a property worth over half a million bucks. The policy is and will remain: renting only to family groups PERIOD. Try your luck up around Corolla, you can drive down to Hatteras for a day trip. And Nags Head supposedly got its name because pirates would tie a lantern around the neck of and old "nag" and walk it on the beach at night, and the ships would see the light & think it was ships bobbing at harbor and tried to come in to shore and ended up stuck on the shoals.

We have had luck with the three rental agencies we have used: Sun Realty, Joe Lamb, Jr. and Outer Banks Vacation Realty. As to our first preference, we prefer Outer Banks Vacation Realty. If there was a problem (such as once the downstairs refrigerator didn't work) someone came out right away and fixed it. Also, they sent us what we needed very promptly when we had to file an insurance claim to get our rental money back when we had to cancel because of Hurricane Isabel.

The outer banks was GREAT. We rented a smaller home in Corolla from Karachele Realty, and it was just about the most wonderful vacation. The people at Karichele were very helpful and the house was so neat..full of books and antiques and "beachy" things. The beach was fantastic. Never crowded. Pristine. The weather was beautiful, in spite of the fact that we rode in on Charlie!!! (Actually, at the start of our vacation the beach was empty due to Charlie except for us!) If heaven was a place on earth it would be the outer banks!!! There was so much to do, you really need a couple of weeks to see it all. The lighthouses. The aquarium. Wright Bros. Fort Raliegh. The Elizabethian Gardens. And there was so much that we still didn't get to see. We'll definitely be going back!! It's definitely a place you could easily get homesick for!!!

Looking for a good seafood buffet in OBX? Try Carolina's on beach road near MP6. Awesome meal for a decent price. I think this was the first time a went to a seafood buffet where they didn't run out of crabs legs! They had Mahi Mahi, tuna, shark and a great set-up. You know your at the right place when they lay down a paper table cover and put a huge empty bowl on the table. Roll of paper towels to boot. The waitress was very kind too. She delivered a basket of steamed clams to our table, which were kind of tough. When I thanked her for them, but declined eating anymore, she went back and got the smallest clams they had and returned to our table with them, saying "Try these, they might be a little better". That's service! DON'T go to the Western Sizzler on 12 if you see a seafood buffet on their sign. They are still learning. BTW - The Wharf Restaurant everyone has raved about in the past is unfortunately permanently closed. I understand the owner became ill and sold the property to a real estate agent for building homes. We were shocked when we found that out. Didn't try Jimmy's Seafood Buffet. There is something wrong with enticing customers by giving away $100 daily. Went to Georges Junction and they surprised us with "Reservations required" on a Wednesday afternoon at 4:30pm! Many customers were turned away while we were there and it didn't look that great anyway. Good luck and have fun!

A friend is looking for a place to stay in South Nagshead, and if I recall there is a very nice little spot that I think is on Virginia Dare, somewhere bet. mile post 2-4? (but I'm not sure). It is not a beachfront property, but patrons can simply cross Virginia Dare to a beach access path. Does anyone know the name? Thanks.

In response to the large family looking for a special restaurant I would highly recommend Elizabeth's in Duck. I had one of the most spectacular meals there...service was outstanding and the interior is absolutely charming. They are large enough to accomodate your group, however, you might have to dine on the early side because of the babies. This is truly a SPECIAL place!

You can bring pets to the Outerbanks Motel, and they only charge $5 to bring a pet. I have stayed there 3 times with my Golden Retreiver. and it has always been a pleasant experience. The rooms are clean, the staff is friendly and it's right on the beach! It's just a short jaunt to The Tides Restaurant as well which I love as well.

I used to take my ATVs to the OBX seevral years ago.....the Northern Beaches, where we also rent our vacation home... One year, the COunty decided to charge for permits....which was OK by me.....then, the next year ATVs were banned unless you own a home there. I wish they would change the rule to allow people renting homes up there to have their ATVs as well.... DZ

I just wanted to say me and my family have been going to hatteras island now for 5 years and this upcoming summer would be our sixth. Since hurricane isabel our lives have changed, we have stayed at the Durant Station and it was like our second home, all of us were heartbroken when we heard the news that it was destroyed by the storm. I've been looking real hard for somewhere else to stay and really nothing is going to be like the Durant Station, it was oceanfront with a pool and everything. My point is i hope someone knows if they are rebuliding this, if anyone knows anything or has any information on this could u email my address please! Thank You

I am going to the Outer Banks for the third time this year. We stay for two weeks every other year and the experience is in a word, remarkable. This year we hope to have 35 family members there and look forward to celebrating my mother-in-law's 80th birthday. My in-laws have been going to the Outer Banks for 35 years and I have heard too many stories to tell here. Anyone in search of a relaxing, family oriented, beautiful vacation spot should go there and see why James Taylor singing "Carolina in My Mind" in February in Pittsburgh can make a 36 year old Pittsburgher sit back, smile, and dream of salt air, the warm sun, and a cold beer. You really have to see, hear, and smell it to believe it.

Hi, I started going to the Outerbanks about 10 - 12 years ago. about 1991-92. We were in a group of 24 mainly everyone was family although a few were friends. We rented 2 homes in Carolla, (Whaleshead beach). I must say that Whaleshead beach was "THE NICEST" beach on the island. In our opinion. I have to add that ALL the beaches on the island are the best. We like to move around from Carolla to Nagshead. Its all #1 to us. I will live there one day! As I said, There were alot of us and everyone did their own thing. Parasailing, shopping, canoeing, Boogie boarding, digging in the sand, getting up early to watch the sunrise, sitting on top of a sand dune Watching the sunset, watching the dolphins every morning and evening, being with true friends and family, my favorite hanging out on the beach. The restaurants on the Island are very simular. They all from what I have experianced are really good. I do make sure when I go to the Island I stop in at the Jolly Roger restaurant. I think its the best, and the people are very friendly. If you go there you will not be sorry. Another of my favorite things that happenes every time you go onto the Island is, The great smell of the ocean, the air just comes over you and puts you in a peaceful serine feeling and it lasts however long you are there.

I want to let everyone know what a friendly wonderful place me and my husband found on the outer banks! If you are planning a family vacation, this is the best place. White beaches and friendly locals added to an already grand adventure for us. Our home through Village Realty provided great comforts, including a computer...yeah!! The best resturant by far was Carolina Seafood in Kill Devil Hills. Our waitress was Denise, who needs to rethink her calling in life! Not only was the food great, but our service was wonderful! Denise can sure keep our glasses fulland our tummys happy, but she also gave us great a comic show with each refill, plate pick up, bowling dumping, and crabs delievery! She was jonny on the spot for all our needs and also with her jokes and the way she made us feel like close friends. I only can say one bad thing about our trip to carolina seafood and that is being shocked at what people leave for a tip. I was able to observe a small tip on a table felt by the last tentants. We left more, not for thegreat service and great food but also because we felt sorry for our waitress who gave these people the same service but felt that five dollars was good enough for her. Remember tipping for these people means a pay check! Tip like you should or dont eat out! 15% of a check is what you should leave, not 5%.
2thumbs up to the Outer banks of NC and all the people who treated us like family.

I have been looking at several sites about the devastation the banks. It truly hurts to see it. I haven't been back in 4 years. We used to stay at the Pebble Beach Hotel in Nags Head. The last time I called for reservations, this was after Hurricane Dennis, I found out the last two cottages had been demolished and the hotel was being torn down for a new something. Heart breaking. I have stayed their many times and loved the old nags head charm of that area and no dunes. I am glad I got to take my son there. Once when he was 2 ( in the middle of gale warnings) and again when he was 4. He loves it. I will have to get back soon and hope that all is not gone this time. I had a feeling when I saw that category 5 out in the ocean, where it was headed.

My Dad grew up in Boston and New Bedford near the water. As a child, no matter how little we had, my father would figure out a way to go to Cape Cod. I was in Nirvana. As the Cape got overdeveloped and we moved to the Baltimore area I assumed there would never be a repeat of those seashore sensations (notice I didn't use the word beach....Atlantic City is a beach but a seashore?). Then returning from Chicago in the mid-70's my parents told me about a place called Duck, NC. I went down in October 1978 and have been going back ever since. I do not need to convey my memories because they have all been said by others here. I am humbled and in envy of what I am reading. However if you will permit me to convey briefly an experience.................I work in a government agency and an elderly gentleman requested my assistance. It was Summer 2000 and I had just returned from 2 weeks in Salvo,Hatteras. This gentleman had a t-shirt on which depicted Outer Banks lighthouses so I asked him how often he traveled there. "Never" he gruffly said...his daughter had sent him the shirt. He did tell me however that he had been there once. During World War 2 the oil tanker he was a crewmember on had been torpedoed and sunk off Hatteras. Though half the crew perished he had been rescued. Listening to him describe the incident made you feel like you were there on the ship. I asked him the ship's name and then went back to my office to check my "Graveyard of the Atlantic" map. There it was...his ship. I showed him the map and he beamed like a child and seemed to be lost momentarily. I stood there in awe of this coincidence. I pray the Outer Banks, especially Hatteras and Ocracoke don't go the way of Cape Cod.

My husband and I have visited the outer banks every year for the past 5 years and usually visit in Sept. The weather is mild, and there aren't as many people. We usually stay at the Lighthouse View in Buxton. It is always clean, the rooms are lovely. This year we are looking for a cottage on the beach if at all possible, and would like to stay in the Nags Head area, but are wary, since our last visit, we noticed some houses were actually in the water at high tide. I am checking out places and realty companies listed within these postings, but we definiately want a very clean facility with easy access to the beach. We once stayed at the Sea Oatel in Nag's head I think it was..I don't recommend it. Ahhhh the outer banks..so much to do..so little time!!

Beware the policies of Sun Realty on the Banks. Through their website we booked one of their rental properties. All was what it was advertised until we got a look at the "lighted volleyball court". This turned out to be a volleyball dune. Yes there was a net but the court had long been a sand dune. Complete with decorative grass. When we called to complain we were told to bring it up at check out. At check out we were told no one was there to handle it. Instead of getting our security deposit back we were told the house had not been cleaned. Mainly the beds had not been made. Understandable except we paid $90 to have maid service provided by Sun Realty. We even left a $20 tip for the maids! We are not deadbeats. We are all responsible college educated middle aged adults who stayed at the house. When we called to discuss the issues we were told that we were to only respond in writing. What kind of service is this? We will not take a rental with Sun Realty again and I would encourage others to ask direct questions regarding the condition of the house upon departure. Did I mention the holes in the walls and the ceiling fan that didn't work?

This is a good idea but no information seems to be provided, just questions.
(Editor's Note: People do share a lot of their experiences, but sometimes there are a lot of questions too. Perhaps rather than answering in a private e-mail, people can post the answer back to the Travelogue for everyone to see.)

My friends and I have been visiting the outer banks for three years now. This will be the first year that we are all 21 and we were wondering if there were any bars or clubs in the surrounding areas to attend. If anyone has any information about anything exciting or entertaining, let me know. Thanks

I'm planning to visit the Nags Head area soon. I'm looking for a place to place racquetball.

Will be vacationing in Nags Head 9/13-9/20, driving from New Jersey. One member of our party will need to get back to Somerset County, Manville, New Jersey on 9/17 eve. Is there a bus line which runs to NJ? or What is the nearest major airport which flies to Newark? or Is there a local smaller airport that provides service to NJ, specifically to Central Jersey Airport in Hillsboro, NJ?

We just came back from vacation at Carova Beach, Outer Banks nc... It was as always an amazing time. My family has come together every two years to vacation at your beautiful place. We have now decided to come back every year, because we miss it so much on the years that we skip. There is something for everyone there, whether you want action all of the time, or you want peace and quiet. You can find it at the outer banks. I have been to other beaches and there just is no comparison. The Outer Banks is really growing up, but I hope that it still can stay, a quiet get away. Thank you.

I am coming to the Outerbanks July 4 thru the 12 for our first family vacation since having a child in November. We are renting a house in Avon, on Due East Drive. Could anyone tell me the names of some resturants or shops in the area, is there a grocery store near by, or will we have to do all of the shopping in Nags Head. Also, if anyone knows of any cool shops please let me know, even if they are on another island. Also, are there any bike rental shops that have bikes with baby seats? Our little girl will be 7 months old then, and I would realy like to take her out on a little bike ride. Thanks!! English

- Loved the Cedar Island ferry ride to Ocracoke.
- Took the ATV onto the beach & rode for hours looking for shells & watching the surf fishers.
- Also saw sea turtles nesting on the beach.
- Ate,partied and danced at Howards Pub 2 nights in a row. Howards had a great band playing that week-end.....I think the name of the Band was "Blanket" played a variety of great music from the 60's (Jimmi Hendrix, Janis Joplin) 70's, and present day rock. I wish I could find more info on this band, THEY ROCKED. I think they were from Washington DC Pass info on if you have any. And Howards food & service was great, I don't care what anyone else writes. I'd go back in a skinny minute.
- Ocracoke is a fun Island to visit. Lots of shops to go in, lots of eating places.
- Just don't book reservations at the Pelican Lodge (a Bed & Breakfast) A very very big big disappointment!!!! Especially if you get stuck w/ the room on the 3rd floor w/ no bathroom & have to go down to the dungeon (ground floor) to use the thrown (and I mean literally) the toliet is up on a platform about 3 ft. and you have to climb on it. We were totally embarrassed w/ this and felt like the innkeeper really pulled a fast one on us. Not to mention the BR shower looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the middle ages & we had no towels or washclothes to take a bath w/ the next morning and couldn't find the innkeeper anywhere. The innkeeper also runs a aviation business, and is gone most the time running errands. This place just ruined our trip all together. (Our 15th wedding anniversary spent climbing up & down 2 flights of stairs just to go to the "thrown & then no way of taking a bath)
- But other than that, I loved Ocracoke & would go back.
- The beach was beutiful and all the islanders were very friendly.

My husband, family & I have been coming down to the Outer Banks since 1992. If we can we try to make it down twice a year. We love it here and plan on moving down when our daughter starts college. We love the pace of life here. The ocean and sound are absolutely beautiful and somehow I always seem like I am a little closer to heaven when I stand on the beach at night at look up at the beautiful stars. We have stayed with many real estate companies, all of which have been wonderful and accomadating. I have to say my favorite is the Village at Nags Head. I just love everything that they have to offer. From ocean to sound, golf lovers, water lovers, and just plain lovers they seem to cater to them all. Our favorite places to eat besides our kitchen where my husband is the best cook, bar none, he can make a mean tuna steak, are: Jimmy's Buffet, Jockey's Ribs, where we celebrate my nephews birthday every year. He loves their mousse for dessert! The Wharf and I love Jolly Rogers! They have the best She Crab soup! We have been to the Lighthouses from Corola to Hatteras. My husband, nephew and my cousin went to the top of Hatteras after it was moved and said the view was breathtaking. We have made a trip to Okracoke which I think was worth the drive. It was beautifual and quaint. Jockey Ridge is beautiful at sunset....and dont forget about the Sunset Cruise on the Sound. I love it all and will be back again this June! Please have a wonderful vacation...Relax and let the Outer Banks soothe what ails you!

Where would be the best place to get on a ferry to go to all the outer banks areas. we will be at Wilmington N.c. first. I heard Moorehead city was one but I want to know for sure. I want to visit manteo, nags head, kitty hawk. really we are interesting in all the places along the coast and islands. What would your preference be if it was you. What is the price of the ferries. Is it easy to get off and tour the different places and get back on the ferry. I would appreciate your advice.

What is the most interesting (for adults and kids under 13) way to drive and nice, inexpensive (not camping) places to stay from Chicago to the Outer Banks, but doesn't take us too out of the way? Any suggestions for nice, but inexpensive but interesting places (not camping) to stay with kids for 10 days or 2 weeks during middle July or Aug. would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

My boyfriend has been transferred with Sprint to Dare County. We are both looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom Condo, Apartment or House in a good neighborhood. We would prefer to be on the Island. He is now residing in a camper temporarily until we find something inexpensive. Meanwhile, as a single mother, my finances are limited and my child of 7 years of age and I would like to find an inexpensive place to live. I work with the Pitt County School System and will be transferring to Dare County. We are looking for an apt/condo that is well within our means. Please send me any information that you can provide. Thank you.

I stayed at a great place last year and have booked it again this year. It was ocean front with a pool just steps away. It a townhouse, so I didn't pay the "big" house price. The Windjammer in Nags Head was great. I stayed in Unit V, Lovin' Life. We rented it through Nags Head Realty and it couldn't have been better. I would recommend it to groups of 6 to 8. It was perfect for the 6 of us. There was an ocean view from every window.

Hi! Responsible married couple in their fifties, John and Lucy from Connecticut, are looking for summer employment on the Outer Banks. John is a retired graphic artist and Lucy is a special education teacher. We've spent great vacation time there when are kids were young. Now we would like to experience almost any type of work to enjoy the area for the summer. John is available immediately while Lucy will be available starting in June when her school concludes. Thanks

-- Janice Johnson  - Thursday, March 20, 2003 at 09:44:57

I am going to be in the area from April 18-25th, 2003. I would like to know if there is a private landing strip for a small single engine plane that would allow me to use the strip for temporary parking now and again Dec 14th-21st of 2003. I have a condo at the Outer Banks Beach Club and will be there for the 100 Years of Powered Flight festivities. Parking prices are $40 per day at Dare County airport and I can't see spending that much. If you have such a location or knows of someone with a small strip, I would like to hear from you. Thanks, DOC
