I have seen some posts concerning problems with beach house
rentals. Has any one stayed with Surf or Sound Realty? We will
be staying in North Avon next June (2005) for our first visit to
the OBX. I have read comments on some other boards that weren't
to favorable. Also my son wants to go crabbin. Where is the best
place to do this, in the sound or somewhere else? Thanks.

The outer banks was GREAT. We rented a smaller home in Corolla
from Karachele Realty, and it was just about the most wonderful
vacation. The people at Karichele were very helpful and the
house was so neat..full of books and antiques and "beachy"
things. The beach was fantastic. Never crowded. Pristine. The
weather was beautiful, in spite of the fact that we rode in on
Charlie!!! (Actually, at the start of our vacation the beach was
empty due to Charlie except for us!) If heaven was a place on
earth it would be the outer banks!!! There was so much to do,
you really need a couple of weeks to see it all. The
lighthouses. The aquarium. Wright Bros. Fort Raliegh. The
Elizabethian Gardens. And there was so much that we still didn't
get to see. We'll definitely be going back!! It's definitely a
place you could easily get homesick for!!!

Hi Folks, I am the IGFA representative for the northern Outer
Banks. (International Game Fish Assoc.) You mention that the
world record Blue Marlin was caught in North Carolina. That is
not a current record. Also the world record Red Drum should be
mentioned as having been caught in NC (Hatteras). Your pier
information needs updating regarding Hurricane Isabel. Thank you
for this nice work. Mike Hayes mhayes@pinn.net

My brothers and I want to take a three day trip to the outer
banks this fall to fish the surf for big bluefish. Which month,
October or November, has proven the best for big running blues?
Other than calling down for fishing reports, what are some signs
to look for, such as weather conditions, that trigger a big run?

Hi, We will be traveling from Wisconsin this summer ( 2005) on
what I hope will be the first of may trips to the Outer Banks. I
was wondering if anyone could help me decide which of the four
national parks ot stay at. All I have is the NPS descrption to
go by, which is a start, but is much better to have someone who
has been there, give you the scoop. I have two teenage boys who
love to fish, swim and boggie board or surf, any help would be
most helpful

....or NOT to stay....We just got back today from a family
vacation in Corolla. We rented through ResortQuest. What a
disaster! FIVE broken beds, broken patio furniture, towel racks
falling off the wall, mildewed air vents, broken telephone,
broken sliding glass door that would not lock, scummy hot tub
(unusable for thei first half of the week because it was full of
water that left a sticky film on you), broken and dirty high
chair sitting on a filthy screen porch when we arrived, living
room furniture had food smeared on the cushions, wall paper
peeling. This is not even an exhaustive list! The property was
considered a GOLD level property! I spent the first two days of
my vacation managing the property and scheduling maintenance,
just so we could stay there! We met a homeowner and an
independent pool contractor who both told us that Resortquest
Outerbanks is overwhelmed with the volume of properties they
have. We were told by a Resortquest manager that things just
move a little slower here - HA! With customer service like that
they won't have to worry --- they will be losing so much
business they won't have to worry about those pesky customers.

DO NOT rent from Kitty Dunes rentals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We rented
from them Aug.15-22, 2004 for the first time in the OBX. With
Hurricane Charley approaching the week prior to our departure,
we watched the Dare County, NC weather bullentins
faithfully...When the final warning came out the night prior to
our trip on outerbaks.com saying Sat. arrivals should wait until
Sunday, Aug. 15th to come to the OBX we got worried. We called
Kitty Dunes Sat PM...our arrival was for Sunday, Aug.15th. "Not
a problem at your property"...we were to be staying in Kitty
Hawk, Tateway Rd. We checked again Sun. Aug, 15th BEFORE we left
agin with the outerbanks.com national weather warings..."ALL
VISITORS ARE WELCOME BACK TO THE OUTER BANKS" was the header. We
left from PA...took 8 1/2 hours to arrive at our home...we had
two feet of water awaiting us....We called Kitty Dunes Rentals
the Mon. Aug. 16th to report to them our problem...their
answer...we can give you a refund...NOT relocate us, try to help
us find a place to stay...just pick up your money and leave! We
are "normal" folk getting one vacation a year...we even took out
travel insurance INCASE of a hurricane (through Kitty
Dunes)...this was there answer. The water stayed surrounding our
house until we left Sun. Aug.22. We rigged a makeshift ramp to
get in and out of the house. The Public Works Dept. pumped water
off our road at the RT 158 intersection. When that was
open...they left! The bugs began coming into the home by day
5...yearround residents of the neighborhood cautioned us against
walking through the sewage drenched waters...NOT Kitty Dunes,
who themselves were partially flooded 1 1/2 blocks away!
NEVER would I rent from Kitty Dunes...stear clear from
them...they gave us the offer to a refund (after they already
knew the condition of our home prior to our departure) but NEVER
offerred to relocate us as stated in the contract with them! (By
the way...we toured the entire Kitty Hawk area and saw many
Kitty Dunes property rental signs on homes that were DRY and
vacant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) OBX-yes, we would return...Kitty Dunes
rentals...NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had an unpleasant experience with the staff of the Falcon
Motel in Buxton and would suggest that you try and find lodging
somewhere else...they were rather unfriendly and did not seem to
care whether my wife and I returned as
guests on a future date. You can probably find better lodging at
another motel.

Looking for a good seafood buffet in OBX? Try Carolina's on
beach road near MP6. Awesome meal for a decent price. I think
this was the first time a went to a seafood buffet where they
didn't run out of crabs legs! They had Mahi Mahi, tuna, shark
and a great set-up. You know your at the right place when they
lay down a paper table cover and put a huge empty bowl on the
table. Roll of paper towels to boot. The waitress was very kind
too. She delivered a basket of steamed clams to our table, which
were kind of tough. When I thanked her for them, but declined
eating anymore, she went back and got the smallest clams they
had and returned to our table with them, saying "Try these, they
might be a little better". That's service! DON'T go to the
Western Sizzler on 12 if you see a seafood buffet on their sign.
They are still learning. BTW - The Wharf Restaurant everyone has
raved about in the past is unfortunately permanently closed. I
understand the owner became ill and sold the property to a real
estate agent for building homes. We were shocked when we found
that out. Didn't try Jimmy's Seafood Buffet. There is something
wrong with enticing customers by giving away $100 daily. Went to
Georges Junction and they surprised us with "Reservations
required" on a Wednesday afternoon at 4:30pm! Many customers
were turned away while we were there and it didn't look that
great anyway. Good luck and have fun!

My family comes to the OBX 2-3 times a year. Most of the time we
stay in Buxton at the Cape Hatteras Motel. The motel is nice and
suits our needs MOST of the time. Sometimes mywife and I come by
ourselves....when we do this we love to bring our little PUG, so
we can't stay at the CHM.
I would like info on rental houses, motels, cottages that are
pet friendly. Thank you
PS We love the food at "The Tides" and "Diamond Shaols".

Will be vacationing on Outer Banks this fall. Would like advice
on which part of or town in Outer Banks to seek lodging. Would
like to be near/central to shopping, activities, restaurants.
Don't mind driving to any of these, but like to walk and would
like some of these to be within reasonable walking distance.
Prefer condo style lodgings. Suggestions?

No place is cheap. I recommend the Blue Heron Motel at Milepost
16 1/2. In the off season it is somewhat affordable. It is a
smaller Mom & Pop place owned by the Gladdens. Our family stays
there every year. The outer Banks are the closest thing to
Heaven on Earth.

I just wanted to say me and my family have been going to

be our sixth. Since hurricane isabel our lives have changed, we
have stayed at the Durant Station and it was like our second
home, all of us were heartbroken when we heard the news that it
was destroyed by the storm. I've been looking real hard for
somewhere else to stay and really nothing is going to be like
the Durant Station, it was oceanfront with a pool and
everything. My point is i hope someone knows if they are

I am going to the Outer Banks for the third time this year. We
stay for two weeks every other year and the experience is in a
word, remarkable. This year we hope to have 35 family members
there and look forward to celebrating my mother-in-law's 80th
birthday. My in-laws have been going to the Outer Banks for 35
years and I have heard too many stories to tell here. Anyone in
search of a relaxing, family oriented, beautiful vacation spot
should go there and see why James Taylor singing "Carolina in My
Mind" in February in Pittsburgh can make a 36 year old
Pittsburgher sit back, smile, and dream of salt air, the warm
sun, and a cold beer. You really have to see, hear, and smell it
to believe it.

I am looking for a place to take my 13 year old son on an ATV
trial. The ideal place would include a guided tour through a
wooded area in SC,NC,GA,TN, or FL. He and I will need to rent
all the required equipment (2-ATV's, safety equip, etc.) Most
places advertising on the web require the drivers to be at least
16 years old with a drivers license. There must be a place that
will let a 13 year old boy ride an ATV.
