My parents have been going since their honeymoon, then I was
born, and now 26 years later I've been every summer,
sometimes more then 1 week....
However for me, "You know you are hooked on OBX when you
have lived in California for 2 years, seen all the beautiful
beaches, and want nothing more then to run back to OBX" :P I
find myself looking for places to buy/rent all the time...

We rented a house through Surf or Sound last week in Avon
and when we arrived, every single bathroom shower curtain
was filthy with mold. They did come and replace all the
shower curtains, but we had a list of 12 other items that
needed to be addressed but never were. The house was Lady of
Dare #532 and it needed an all over house cleaning. In fact,
when we left, the house was cleaner than when we arrived a
week earlier because we cleaned it all before we checked
out. Never again will we rent from Surf or Sound or stay in
Avon, -- the mosquitoes were horrible down south. We never
had that problem in Corolla.

We just ret'd from Avon, NC and the mosquitoes were horrible. We
couldn't be outside the last 3 days of our vacation because of
them. Don't know why they got so bad, may have been the wind or
the 15 min. of rain that we had during the 7 days we were there
but we will never again rent a place in Avon because of them.
The other times we've stayed in Corolla and never had this
problem.

I am in the middle of my vacation as I type this in the
morning with my coffee. This was the 5th year we stayed in
the same home dealing with Surf or Sound, but this is the
last year we will consider any house they manage.
The house is great; we love it. Unfortunately for us, Surf
or Sound took nearly three days to get someone out to
replace a light bulb. It wouldn't be a big deal, but it's
the only light on the porch. Their statement to me was why
couldn't I simply change it, but since I don't have a
ladder, it was no-go. So the next evening, at 1:00 in the
morning, I had to take my dog to the emergency vet. There's
no light on the front porch and the light from inside was
not enough to illuminate the porch for me, and I fell while
going through the front door. Thankfully I didn't hurt the
dog, and my elbow will probably not suffer permanent damage.
The other major problem for us was that the main shower was
disassembled (I am not making this up). How can the house be
marked ready with an obvious issue like this? Does the-turn
around team look to see what's going on?
No house is perfect (nor do we expect it to be), but when
the management doesn't care about safety issues it's time to
go elsewhere, which we have already done.

We stay as far South as we can, every summer, in Hatteras
Village.
Last summer the mosquitoes were TERRIBLE. We've been there 3
summers so far, and that was THE WORST ever. But the other
summers were not too bad.
It was when the wind stopped, that we'd all of a sudden get
eaten alive. We ended up getting cans of 40% DEET spray, and
that seemed to help. Cancer in a can, of course...

When we were looking for houses our realtor said that if we
were going to buy on the sound side, that we would need a
screened in porch as the mosquitoes could get pretty bad. It
depends sometimes on where you are. We walk to the sound all
the time and sit there for awhile and never have a problem.
My husband says that is because where we sit the water is
moving and there aren't many reeds etc. We do know that a
lot of people own and rent on the sound side, so how bad can
it be???? We also have shopped in stores in Duck at
different times of the day that are right on the sound and
never had a problem. My husband says they also have mosquito
control here - they spray certain areas which helps. Hope
this information is helpful.

hey, me and a bunch of friends are looking for a place to
stay preferably in duck or carolla. We're all 19, one of us
might be 20, but we don't want to cause any trouble; we are
a clean, neat, and well behaved group of kids. We just want
to spend some time at the beach. We did this last year but
couldn't find any place that would rent to anyone under 24.
Eventually, we got a family member to pick up a key for us
while we spent the week in obx. The week was probably the
best week of my life. Nothing went wrong, the house was
clean and perfectly fine.
Does anyone know of any owners who will rent to 19 year
olds? Any place you would recommend calling or searching
for? Please don't tell me to go to another beach with my
friends. I don't want to be rude, but frankly we want to go
to obx, not some place else.
Thanks for all the help!

Hi, you probably have lots of answers by now - but I just
wanted to share that Kill Devil Hill or Nags Head have more
things for teenagers to do. Remember, that the Outer Banks
are actually several towns that are within miles of each
other, so it will be easy to get to a different "town". The
most removed are the north end which is Corolla, Duck, and
Corova. The most southern end has Avon, Salvo, Waves,
Rodanthe, Hatteras. Anything in the middle - which is
Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head is
centrally located. Hope this helps. Hope you enjoy OBX!

I am desperately looking for a 3 BR 2 BA long term
affordable rental home in the Kill Devil Hills, NC area.
Going through a divorce where husband abandoned my 13 yr old

to relocate to area that will be closer to my sister and
also have good soccer program for daughter. We have a cat
who is 8 yrs old, front paws are declawed, neutered, and has
always been indoor cat and has always been fully litter box
trained. Looking to relocate no later than June 15, 2008
(possibly much earlier!) Have been surfing the net and have
not been able to find anything that meets the rent
affordability, # BRs and BAs, right location and accepts
pets! PLEASE HELP if you have or know of any long term
rental that might possibly meet all the above. Thanks so
much!

simple but effective way of be served like a cafeteria line
then you order your breakfast pay for it, and a nice lady

bring it to you . It was very good but the seating was tight
but it made you feel as though you were at home and you were

Category: Hooked on the Outer Banks
I know I'm hooked on the OBX because we keep going back,
wife and 5 kids, even though we cant afford it. Always in
salvo, its actually much less expensive
than it could be. Can't wait, we leave again in 5 days.

Look into the KOA campground on Hatteras Island. I just returned
from Hatteras and it is very quiet and remote. There are no fast
food restaurants, even grocery stores are hard to find.

Did you find anywhere to go horseback riding? Please let me
know. I will be going in July with 6 teenagers, and this seems
to be one activity they all agree they want to do! Any help
would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks,
Laura

Can anyone please tell me what the detour was about yesterday
(Sat., 6/16/07) morning between 8am and 10am south of Moyock? We
had a great vacation in Nags Head during the previous week and
then spent two hours diverted off of Rte. 158. We rejoined Rte.
168 in front of the Moyock VFD.
Thanks, Gary

I need a place to relax and grab a bit of peace and quiet. I've
been the main care giver to a husband with MS, a mother with
Alzheimer's (recently deceased) and an elderly father, and a
wonderful teenage daughter! Can anyone recommend a quiet, safe,
campground near the water that has camp sites that I can park
near, since I have post-polio and walking is frequently a
challenge. My daughter and I would like to relax, dream, read,
and laugh for a few days in August. Thought somewhere on the
outer banks might be a good location. Any suggestions would be
welcome.

As far as the crabbing goes we have had some luck at times on the bridge on the way back into
Collington Harbo. Its the right turn right after the Wright Memorial a couple miles back.
Make sure that you are there while the tide is moving in or out seems like the best time. When
the tide ebs action drops off. Last year caught about 2 dozen keepers in about two hours.
Good luck.

I would be interested in securing a seat, but I will be the only one in my
party. Have you heard from any others? I would definitely be interested.
