My friend and I are moving to Corolla for the summer and need
somewhere to stay. We will be arriving mid May and leaving at
the end of August. We are coming to work (waitressing) so we
can't afford anything fancy. Let me know if you have any
suggestions.

Hey can anyone help me in finding a really fun place to stay in
Cape Hatteras? My friend went down there when he was younger and
remembered going camping and it being one big party! Although he was only 12 at the time, he
thought it was the coolest. Now that he'll be 23 we're thinking
of throwing a party week vacation to the outerbanks...any advice on where to stay? go?
do? Thanks.

To Vicki, Hi my family has been visiting the Outer Banks for
almost twelve years. The only houses for rent I have seen in the
North Beach area (Corolla, Whalehead) that are $700 per week are
sound side, plus it depends on the season, (off-in-mid) Nags
Head may be cheaper but I am not sure. I prefer the North
Beaches. There are some houses that do allow pets. Get some
rental books and book Early! We usually have to book a year in
advance. You could also look into the oceanside rentals that are
in cul-de-sacs.

....or NOT to stay....We just got back today from a family
vacation in Corolla. We rented through ResortQuest. What a
disaster! FIVE broken beds, broken patio furniture, towel racks
falling off the wall, mildewed air vents, broken telephone,
broken sliding glass door that would not lock, scummy hot tub
(unusable for thei first half of the week because it was full of
water that left a sticky film on you), broken and dirty high
chair sitting on a filthy screen porch when we arrived, living
room furniture had food smeared on the cushions, wall paper
peeling. This is not even an exhaustive list! The property was
considered a GOLD level property! I spent the first two days of
my vacation managing the property and scheduling maintenance,
just so we could stay there! We met a homeowner and an
independent pool contractor who both told us that Resortquest
Outerbanks is overwhelmed with the volume of properties they
have. We were told by a Resortquest manager that things just
move a little slower here - HA! With customer service like that
they won't have to worry --- they will be losing so much
business they won't have to worry about those pesky customers.

Category: Places to Stay
DO NOT rent from Kitty Dunes rentals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We rented
from them Aug.15-22, 2004 for the first time in the OBX. With
Hurricane Charley approaching the week prior to our departure,
we watched the Dare County, NC weather bullentins
faithfully...When the final warning came out the night prior to
our trip on outerbaks.com saying Sat. arrivals should wait until
Sunday, Aug. 15th to come to the OBX we got worried. We called
Kitty Dunes Sat PM...our arrival was for Sunday, Aug.15th. "Not
a problem at your property"...we were to be staying in Kitty
Hawk, Tateway Rd. We checked again Sun. Aug, 15th BEFORE we left
agin with the outerbanks.com national weather warings..."ALL
VISITORS ARE WELCOME BACK TO THE OUTER BANKS" was the header. We
left from PA...took 8 1/2 hours to arrive at our home...we had
two feet of water awaiting us....We called Kitty Dunes Rentals
the Mon. Aug. 16th to report to them our problem...their
answer...we can give you a refund...NOT relocate us, try to help
us find a place to stay...just pick up your money and leave! We
are "normal" folk getting one vacation a year...we even took out
travel insurance INCASE of a hurricane (through Kitty
Dunes)...this was there answer. The water stayed surrounding our
house until we left Sun. Aug.22. We rigged a makeshift ramp to
get in and out of the house. The Public Works Dept. pumped water
off our road at the RT 158 intersection. When that was
open...they left! The bugs began coming into the home by day
5...yearround residents of the neighborhood cautioned us against
walking through the sewage drenched waters...NOT Kitty Dunes,
who themselves were partially flooded 1 1/2 blocks away!
NEVER would I rent from Kitty Dunes...stear clear from
them...they gave us the offer to a refund (after they already
knew the condition of our home prior to our departure) but NEVER
offerred to relocate us as stated in the contract with them! (By
the way...we toured the entire Kitty Hawk area and saw many
Kitty Dunes property rental signs on homes that were DRY and
vacant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) OBX-yes, we would return...Kitty Dunes
rentals...NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been to the Ocracoke Island 5 times, but one of the worst
experiences I have ever had was staying at a motel at
Blackbeard's lodge. The owner was quite rude when we complained
about the gang of bikers partying and making noise until 3 AM. I
will be sure to spread the news to all of my neighbors/friends
and family in Raleigh to avoid this lodge. Not only was place
noisy but the room was badly in need of new vinyl flooring in
the bathroom, a paint job and new carpet.

I wanted to place my feedback on a place NOT to stay. We booked
our vacation with Karichele Realty in Corolla. We rented with
Karichele before in Corolla and everything was fine.
Unfortunately that was not the case this time. Although we were
lucky enough to have a week of beautiful weather the house we
rented was a wreck! It was filthy, had not been cleaned in a
very long time. There were 15 bags of leaking garbage left there
that we had to clean up ourselves as Karichele couldn't be
bothered! We even had mold growing on the walls! The hot tub had
a scum line in it (which we didn't know till after we used it in
the dark!-gross!) and the pool dirty. Items listed in the
brochure were missing, such as the crib (important item!) the
Sega, and beach cart! We contacted Karichele 5 of the 7 days we
were there, even made 3 trips to their office. They basically
ignored us! They never came to look at the condition of the
house as they promised (until the day we were leaving)and didn't
return our calls! I have still not heard any reply from them
after two e-mails and sending pictures of the outside mess! The
sad part is we have no guarantee we will even receive our $500
security deposit back! They just put the blame on the homeowner
for letting someone from their family stay in the home previous
to our stay and said any money back is up to them! But it was
Karichle's responsibitly to have the home cleaned, hot-tub and
pool serviced as stated in the contract. Corolla is a beautiful
area and a wonderful place to vacation. I learned the hard way
to check with the Better Business Bureau first before booking
with a rental company. They have an unsatisfactory record with
the BBB due to an unanswered claim, and one that has been
resolved. Hopefully ours will be resolved too, but a word of
advise.......check out the rental company first! Then go and
enjoy the beauty and relaxation of the Outer Banks! I know we
will continue to, just not with Karichele Realty!

I wanted to put my comments out there about my trip to Kitty
Hawk the last week in May of this year. We rented a home from
Joe Lamb Jr. and Assoc. While at the home we found accomadations
were not quite what was advertised. When we called to report
this we were basically told that it was unfortunate, but nothing
could be done about it. They advertised a playground for the
kids and it was so overgrown we could not let the kids play
there. They advertised outdoor speakers, but the speaker wires
were the wrong type or size or something. The air conditioning
did not work. I did not report this since my other complaints
fell on deaf ears, but as we left the house the last day an A/C
repair van pulled up. Making me believe that they knew the
condition of the A/C when we rented the home. I wrote and
complained and got no response, but they were quick to keep $75
of my deposit for "extra cleaning". Aside from keeping the part
of the deposit, I was angry that I had not gotten any response
to my letter. Mr. Hardy told me that he didn't think the letter
was something that needed to be responded to. I told him that we
vacation in NC every year and that he could rest assured that we
would not be using Joe Lamb and Associates again and his
response was that he didn't want "filthy" people renting from
them anyway. The "filth" we left was a garbage can we did not
roll to the street. The manners or lack of them that I have been
shown by this company are appauling. I was told that they are
not responsible for the things wrong with the house, but yet I
was also told that I could not have a letter forwarded to the
owners and could not have the owners information. I hope that
anyone looking to vacation in the Outer Banks has a better
experience than I did and that they spend their money wisely in
another rental company's care. Sincerely, Tracy Williams

I remember when Duck was nothing but lonely beaches where you
could arrive at dawn and watch the fishermen hauling in their
nets with a Jeep onshore. Once they gave my husband and me a
nurse shark caught in the net and we spent three hours removing
the jawbones from this steely sandpapered creature. Took it
home, cleaned it up and had a real conversation piece for many
years--even the teeth had teeth! My husband and I frequented the
entire Outer Banks from the early '60's until he died in 1976
and it will always be one of my most favorite places. Now I have
a Significant Other and am in my seventies; he's 65. He's never
been to the Atlantic Ocean and loves fishing and all the
quaintness of smelly old wharves and weathered buildings as I
recall on Manteo. We're coming to Baltimore on October 10, 2003
to visit my 90-year-old mom and I want to rent a car, drive down
to my old haunts on the Outer Banks and Oregon Inlet. I'd like
to show my honey what ocenfront really means because the coastal
comission in California believes in keeping buildings a good
distance from the surf. I'd like to be IN the surf! I'd like to
find a motel anywhere along the Outer Banks from Kitty Hawk to
Hatteras Island that is very close to the water's edge, has two
beds, air conditioning and is clean and under $100 for the
nights of October 11, and 12th. I would also be requiring
another single room for my sister who will be traveling with us.
Please email me with any and all possibilities. If we find what
we're looking for we'll gladly confirm it by credit card. I
remember eating great breakfasts on the Kitty Hawk fishing pier
and can almost smell that fried fish, grits and hush puppies! I
would appreciate any places that provide good food and lodging
contacting me by either email or snail mail as soon as
feasible.Thanks so much! Laura Ireland

Just wondering where on the outer Banks a couple can simply
pitch a tent and stay for a couple of nights. We are interested

avoid a campground for crowding and financial reasons. Any help

We stayed in a lovely inn in the heart of Okracoke 2 years ago,
I cannot remember the name of it and nothing looks like it on
the web sites that I have searched...It had nice antiques in the
rooms, and one thing that struck us was the pillows had little
shells sewn on to them, it had a small swimming pool surrounded
with plants and flowers and some of the rooms were suites with
hot tubs...has anyone got a clue as to where I am talking about,
the room we stayed in was about 178.00 in 2001...we would love
to come back if we could figure out what it was!

Last time we visited Ocracoke, we stayed in a tent and got
eaten by mosquitoes. The kids (now 2,6 and 13)have fond memories

sleep indoors. Where can we stay in late July or early August
that is clean and mosquito-free (cooking facilities would be
great!)?

We have been going to the Outer Banks for many years. It is a
wonderful place to take the family. We always rent a house from
Southern Shores Realty. We have been very pleased with the
beautiful homes we have stayed in. The beach is private, it is a

The lighthouse at Cape Hatteras is a good choice also. There is

We have heard wonderful things about the outer banks are looking
to take just a short vacation towards the end of March. We have
been to Myrtle beach about, what feels like a billion times and
have grown somewhat tired of the touristy, overcrowdedness of
the area. We are major golfers are looking for middle to upper
scale accommodations on the ocean. This will be the first
vacation alone in 4 years so we are really looking forward to
it. Here is how green I am about the outer banks... I do not
even have any idea how to even get there from the frozen tundra
of Minneapolis. so I could use any suggestions you might have.
Any names of web sites our travel agents that could put together
a golf , hotel package would be great!!! Thank you kind

2 bedrooms. The places I've found with one bedroom don't allow
dogs. Also, we are looking for a place that is nice--near golf,
restaurants, etc. but also as close to the oceanfront as we can
afford. We'd like to pay in the $500-600 range for a week in
July. Too tall an order? Thanks!!!!

Two of my friends and I are trying to find a place to live for
the summer in Nags Head. We will all have graduated from Georgia
Tech and starting careers in August. We want a small cottage
that is affordable. We are accustomed to college budgets, so our
living standards are not outrageous. Any ideas would be great.
Thanks.

Hey, We hope to visit the Outer Banks the end of April (looking
for an uncrowded visit) with our black "golden retriever." Can
anyone give us advice about where we could stay with her? She's
an absolute sweetheart of a dog and extremely well behaved (I
know all pet owners say that, but Cassie really is). We're
interested in a one bedroom cottage or condo. Many thanks.

My family is looking for a vacation destination. You all have
great things to say about Hatteras but what about Emerald Isle?
Has anyone visited there? What would be your choice? We need a
large home that will sleep 17 (10 adults, 7 children). We will
be vacationing in the month of September or October depending on
what we find available. I am running out of time and quite
frankly I'm exhausted already just trying to find a vacation
property that will accommodate us for the dates we have
available. HELP!!!!!!

There is a campground at the end of Okrakoke Island and I
can't remember the name or find the phone number anywhere. If
anyone has any information on this, please email me. I think it
is the only campground on the island and plan on staying there
this summer, 2001. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

number for the "Pony Tail Motel" I believe this is the correct
name) in Okrakoke Island? We did have the telephone number, but,
unfortunately it got lost.

I'm getting married on Oct. 20th and I would like to find a
place to have a girls weekend probably sometime in Aug. or Sept.
Is there a house that we could rent for a weekend, up to three
nights, that could accommodate 15-20 people? FYI - Our ages are
late 20's to early 30's. Also, when do the rates go down?

My family recently returned from a visit to Kill Devil Hills
the week of May 23, 1999.I can not say enough good things about
the Best Western Suites in Kill Devil. Two large rooms plus a
Murphy bed were more than adequate for our family of 6. The
rates were reasonable, and the rooms were clean and right on the
ocean. We have already booked for bext year!

Have come to the Banks since 1971, no MacDonald's then. After
many years seeking a clean motel, we saw the Surfside Inn being
built. Needless to say, it has been our home each year for our
vacation. Our kids are grown, but we love the North side of the
building, 3rd floor. This year we waited too long to get a
reservation. So we'll miss the beautiful beachs of the Outer
Banks (would not stay elsewhere) We will especially miss eating
at our favorite resturaunt, Queen Anne's Revenge on Wanchese.
Such atmosphere and excellent food!!!! Maybe we'll bother
Surfside enough they can shuffle rooms so we can come for the 99
season. Do you hear this Surfside? June 16,1999

My family and I have been vacationing at Nags Head and the
Outer Banks for over 20 years. We have always been very pleased
with the Sea Foam Motel at mile post 16.5 on the beach road. The
accomodations are always excellent, and the staff there is
friendly and helpful. It is nice just being able to step out the
back door of your room right on to the beach. We just returned
from there (June 1999) and once again were very happy with our
trip. We also enjoy dining at the Oasis on the Manteo causeway.
The food, service and atmosphere is great.

We just stayed at a great place. It is managed by Nags Head
Realty. They were so nice and helpful. The home is an ocean
front townhouse at the WINDJAMMER. We stayed in Unit V. It was
great. The best views you could possibly get. The place had
everything you could want without the BIG HOUSE expense. It has
2 bedrooms but sleeps 8. It was great. I would recommend it to
anyone that wants a great vacation but does not want to spend an
arm and a leg.

We vacationed the OBX 5/21 - 5/29/99. Stayed at the Inn at
Corolla Light 3 days to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary.
They had a bottle of champagne on ice waiting in our room when
we got there along with a card. It was a nice touch. Our
anniversary was actually 2 days later and our daughter surprised
us with a wine basket waiting in our room when we got back that
evening. We fixed steaks on the grill and relaxed. You could say
we were well wined and dined. We were disappointed that the pool
was still closed on the Inn premises. We were not advised that
it would be. An indoor pool was available to drive to or take
the trolley, but we declined that option. Whatever you do if you
stay there, don't take a room in the pedestrian traffic zone.
Room was gloomy and poorly lit. They had a great complimentary
breakfast layout, which was good because if you didn't eat it
there or fix it in your room it was hard to find. We had the
most fun discovering that our 4WD drive Mazda MPV Van was fully
capable of negotiating the beach and we drove 9 miles north at
the surf's edge. It was exhilarating. There are homes on the
beach only accessible by beach - no roads. We had hoped to see
the wild horses, but didn't. We had picnicked on the beach the
day before, but the flies were so vicious they bit right through
the insect repellant. We found Corolla a bit too separated from
everything for our tastes. Don't miss the Currituck lighthouse,
the view was incredible and worth the 214 steps it took to get
there. The best place we found to eat at that end of the
Outerbanks was a newly opened place called Qwackers at Duck. The
Duck Seafood Buffet was scheduled to open the following
Wednesday ($22.95 for adults). Qwackers was more reasonable and
located in the same building. We were treated to a beautiful
sunset on the sound following a thunderstorm that occurred while
we were eating. It was breathtaking. We also ate at Fishbones in
Duck. We highly recommend the Clam Chowder (get a bowl), but NOT
the HOT CRAB DIP. What an awful thing to do to good crabmeat and
it was served with garlic bread of all things. We stayed at The
Sea Oatel on the beach in Nags Head for two days. Great view of
the Atlantic. There was a sandstorm going when we arrived that
built dunes on our 3rd floor balcony though and sand blew into
everything. Following day was gorgeous and we visited the
Elizabeth II a replica of a sailing ship. We ate at the Wharf, a
very popular seafood buffet, which is everything it's claimed to
be ($17.95 for all you can eat). Get there early and wait for
the door to open. Otherwise there will be long wait. It was
empty when we went in and packed when we left. The Grits and
Grill was good for breakfast. We also liked the shopping
opportunities around Nags Head. We left the motel curtains and
balcony door open all night the second night so we could hear
and see the breakers. Awoke the next morning to |
